In India mostly we get crossbreed and Amapa Red Backs and all the sellers here label them as Manacapuru Angelfish. After searching for more than 2 years finally I have found the real Manacapurus today. Thanks Brother.
thanks for the video. I have 3 manacapuru angels myself and I love them. Mine are very calm, very little quarrels with any other fish (one reason I like them)
What a great video, exactly what I wanted to know, I was trying to know because most retailers say super red and red back is the same fish ! Thank you for this
Thanks again for an interesting and informative video. I’ve been keeping and breeding Manacapuru angels for the last 4 or 5 years and agree with much, but not all of what you say. For example, I find that the adults can be very aggressive towards each other both in a group or when breeding as pairs. I used to keep the adults in two separate tanks with the males in one tank and females in the other (I found this reduced aggression). Secondly, the strain that I have show full body bars and a reasonable amount of iridescence whereas there is a another “strain” that is lacking the body bars in the centre of the body but exhibit a strong bar that is closest to the caudal. Thanks again for the video 🤓👍
Thanks for sharing! This is an interesting observation about body bars. I had a fully striped variant as well. They were German-bred and I had strong suspicions that they had some striped scalare genes in them. They were also far more aggressive than my solo-striped Manacapurus. Interestingly, all solo-striped fish are either wild caught or f1. Do you know whether your original multi-striped stock is tank-bred or wild-caught? There is also a wild rio Nergo scalare variant with visible stripes and red back, which is sometimes crossed with Manacapuru or labeled as Manacapuru. Simon Forkel (the prominent German breeder) says that striped red back variant is 100% rio Negro, not rio/lago Manacapuru.
@@tropicalfishhub unfortunately I don’t know my Manacapuru origin they were simply purchased as Redback Manacapuru from a LFS. Simon Forkels comment are however very interesting
If you’re interested in seeing the strain that I have I’ve put a video on RU-vid showing the development from eggs to young fry of a few weeks old (Paul’s fishroom).
Thank you for this very informative insight into how to keep manacapuru angels successfully. Very helpful to me as I look to adding them to my collection.
My Manacapuru Angel fish were fed on Vibra bites and Prime reef flakes. Prime reef flakes are something a ram breeder told me about great food even for freshwater fish and normally at a great price.
Awesome video! I was debating last year to ship them across the country (Canada), but than decided to wait and am playing with the idea to get Phillipino Blues. I just found some Thailand imported juveniles yesterday and so far are doing great. But so glad I found your video, was gonna add a 40 gallon tank, so better go to the 60 gallon instead. They are in a 20 gallon now, but only 4 month roughly. If they are truly calmer that`s great, but wasn`t aware they are bigger. Couldn`t find much info before, so thank you;0)
@@tropicalfishhub Yes right now they are just 4 month old, so much fun to see them setting in well. Hope to get the Philipino Blue and maybe Bulgarian Seal Point some time in the future. Glad I waited, these seem to be very healthy, even though they were imported from Thailand two month ago. My mom used to have Altums with her Discus in Germany and I had some regular angelfish that bred in the past. Now just having fun to watch them and learn more. Subscribed and looking forward to new videos to keep learning;0)
@mrswapyyc Check with the Planted Tank in Edmonton. They have also a new website now, makes it easier to check inventory. Or give Gene a call. He brings some stock in on request
Thank you for this. I have been in the hobby for 45 years and only recently have I been introduced to the Manacapuru Angelfish. In fact, I am going to convert my 90 gallon aquarium into a SA biotope with the Manacapuru as the feature fish - - a group of 5. I recently saw some juveniles at my LFS that were labeled as "Manacapuru." Now these could be red backs OR just plain zebra coloration. I thought all Manacapuru's were red backs until I watched your viewed. I will need to be careful when purchasing and ask to make sure they are the red variety.
I'm glad the video was useful. Non-red back Manacapurus are a rarity and only specialised retailers stock them, in which case they always labelled as non-red back. but of course it is always safer to ask!
I purchased 6 blue zebra angelfish online and it looks like they've sent me manacapurus! Ive had them about a month feeding tetramin granules and they all have orange back now and doubled in size!
I live in Sweden and too got F3 from a Polish breeder here who had his ones från Simon Forkel as F2 :-) Very regal fish and after having a nightmare of having black marble scalare constantly squabbling and killing each other, these ones are just "angels" for real. Have 3 of them and a zebra since before. They all got in pairs and divided the tank in two defending their territory. Though not closely as ugly as nasty black ones. Just miner pokes and pushes if a intruder approaches. They go with gourami and ternezias, very peacefully indeed, but as clearly an alpha fish of the tank. Colored out at probably 7-8 months in very bright red now though Tetra Pro color is not every day on their meny - mostly frozen larvae of all kinds, as I spoiled them, haha. They often ignore dry food nowadays.
im watching this video 2nd or third time never gets old , nice video my ones did net get the color yet , still yellowish color 😁 . they are like 6 montha old i think i bought them in february . when i got them they are like 1.5 cm length . 5 inch height , never fed colour feedings until now . i fed ultra fresh exellent bits and dr Basler chlorella . now im going to mix vibra bites of hikari also . only gave that food two days . 🔴will they get the red color when they grow . they are in a bitope aquarium with geos an corydoras . n 🔴 giving a color feed disturb breeding ? our breeders don t give color enancing foods thats a pain 😥
Thank you:) I'm happy that you liked the video. Some Manacapuru strains might take more time to colour up. If your fish are not from wild parents or f2/f3/f4, they may never get truly red because red colour begins disappearing with over breeding. I think you don't need to feed them colour foods, just wait another month or so and they may colour up
Thanks! Wildwoods used to import some German bred Manacapuru. I had mines from them. Sometimes Pier Aquatics also have some good quality ones in stock.
So many questions come to mind when I watch your videos, I keep posting them so I don't forget... in your tank you have sump. In one of the pictures in this video there was an inlet for a canister filter. Why do you have a sump instead of a canister? I think sump would be cleaner and more efficient for gas exchange, besides easier to maintain. Are these the main reasons why you chose sump? Thanks very much for the videos and answers! All the best!
Thank you:) I used to have sump on my main display tank and canister on other smaller tanks. The sump was great, but unlike saltwater hobby there is no point of installing a sump on smaller tank; there isnt much of a bioload there so canister is more than enough.
This is fabulous information. I am getting a small group of them soon, however there is conflicting information online about what is the temptature to keep them at?
I have a pair that looked the ones you have on your video but the only difference is the have long fins. The upper dorsal bends and it’s long but the have a red back with the red spots where the red is but the two lower fins are almost neon blue. Have them for 6 months but they are a total of 9 months now pretty big but nit super big. Do you know what type I have?
Hi! Sorry to bother You, but I got stuck. Do You have any information about Lago Grande de Manacapuru natural habitat? I couldn't find enough info about fishes, plants which are located there.
As far as I know its a blackwater biotope, with white sand, a lot of driftwood, leaf litter, but no aquatic plants. Discus also live there and geophagus, severums, many tetra species, including rummy nose, checkerboard cichlids, possibly no L-numbers.
What would be the minimum height for a tank with Altum or Manacapuru angels in your opinion, please? Let's say for a 180cm long and about 45cm front to back tank? Would 50cm be enough for it's height? Would those measurements be good to keep about 10 to 15 Altum and/or Manacapuru angels? Thanks!
Yes your tank size should be great for a group of angels. Some people say that need minimum tank height of 60cm, but I think 50cm works quite well. They rarely grow taller than 30cm
Loved this video. I wanted to ask you how many could I keep in a 360 litre tank? I was hoping to keep MAX 5, would that be ok or even more? Thank you for your help.
I have been curious about the Mamacapuru. Thank you for the video. Is their temperament like a standard wild scalare or clam like an Altum? Thank you for your videos.
I got ten yesterday :) now about 3 cm body, no red just yet edit 11:00 now I wonder, if 90 gallons is enough for that many. Besides catfish they are the only ones in the tank, I think they should be OK?
@@tropicalfishhub Are they that territorial? Are they aggressive? Perhaps I should have done some more research before I got them, but I did learn a lot from your video. I grabbed them because my fish guy showed me some photos, but he didn't say much of any of the topics you brought up. I had koi angels in the tank previously, they were OK in there, but body size only about 8-10 cm. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post :)
@@nobrainsnoheadache2434 angels will fight each other and other fish when breeding. However, there is no guarantee that you will get a breeding pair out of your group, so no need to be concerned about it yet. You can move a breeding pair into a different tank in case if they pair up
@@tropicalfishhub well an update :) they are starting to get some colour on the back, and I have a couple of pairs at least. One has occupied front and centre of the tank and they are fighting off everyone, they even go at the intruder as a pair; there's a lot going on in there :) They are absolutely voracious, with very heatlhy appetites and they eat everything I give them. So far so good, they are turning out to be beautiful :) thank you so much for your responses and for making this video :)
Actually, my tap water is at pH 7.0 and it drops to 6 or lower within few days after adding to aquarium. I have tons of driftwood which I believe helps to lower the pH a bit
well, a lot of Manacapuru angels are so heavily interbred that no food can colour them up! Most fish sold at non-specialist aquatic stores are likely farmed, I wouldn't expect much of them.
@@tropicalfishhub when I buy them as babys from fish store 2 years ago the told me the was F1 and the told me the will be really red but I cant even se somthing red 🤔
