Guild Wars 1 Is an old school fantasy MMORPG that initially released in 2005, This game features a tab targeting combat system, story driven questing, an instanced world, Dungeons, Raids and PVP, As I've been going back and covering a few old school MMOs such as Everquest 2 and Runes Of Magic recently I thought it'd be a nice nostalgia trip for some of you if I jump into Guild Wars 1 and see if it's still alive.
What do you think about Guild Wars 1? Did you prefer GW1 over GW2 and if so why? let me know in the comments below!

I swear gw1 is still something i miss. Heck if they re-made gw1 with a new engine and upgraded visuals i’d be all over it. The skill bar and build building with the insane amount of skill customization was godly.

Guildwars 1 is actually one of the few mmo's where the early experience and the endgame experience feels like completely different games. 90% of the game is played in 8 man parties even when just questing. The solo experience you get in pre-searing ascalon (the tutorial zone) is very different to the rest of the game. The reason so many people were there is that once you leave, you can never come back. There are a lot of people with "pre-searing characters". The tutorial zone has it's own mini economy as well.

You can also go into the properties of the Shortcut file for GW and take on a specific command so that the next time you open up the game, it'll download all resources required for it. Then you'll no longer be hit with surprise lengthy loading screens. Just looked it up, adding "-image" with the quotations is what's needed.

The reason you see so many players in the opening area is because you get a really big achievement for reaching level 20 in the starting zone. Since when you leave the area you can't go back, they just log into socialize with others that have done the same. Guild Wars 1 had a lot of these little cool things that bred communities. Another special one was the Survivor title, which meant not dying at all before reaching level 20. Which is surprisingly hard.
@Dotrund

Actually, there are 3 Tiers of Survivor(and you know that). I'm half of my mind about Surv title changes(originally you had to reach 1 337 500 xp without dying to get that prestigious Legendary Survivor title ; nowadays it don't lock itself off on a defeat, but simply resets to 0). Regardless, fuck Survivor(title)! It kinda ruined me and made me OCD about not dying! This is a perfect example of dangerous game design.

i played this game for 6000 hours. got obsidian armor on two characters; chaos gloves on three. by the time i was 12, i was an officer in a big PvE guild. i felt as happy achieving that as i did graduating college. seriously. this was the mmo i sunk the majority of my teenage years in and it was so damn good. i will never forget the amazing gameplay and the friendships i made. i’ve played every big mmo that’s come out since then including ff14 and all it’s expansions, as well as all of WoWs expansions, and still this game is the most special to me. it was so disappointing reaching max level in gw2 and feeling nothing. it just wasn’t the same
@smittywerbenjagermanjensen5420
same i was a solo player with small helpful guild who logged 3000 hrs by 12 and had obsidian armor on my main. My friend and I actually got banned for inventing an elementalist troll farm for 3 days while they tweaked the cave spawn or skills. I still never found a game with as much skill customization and different modes of pvp that actually felt good. I think im gonna return with a solo ritualist playthrough since that was my favorite class of the xpacs. its also probably one of the easiest to replay with the companion system too.

Regarding the cons: I seem to remember there's an option when launching the game to have it download everything at once. It takes forever, but then you don't have to download each zones the first time you go to them, and as you said, it wasn't a big issue with good internet. And for the price, each expansions are completely standalone games. You don't need to buy the base game to play the expansions. But if you do, you can have characters travel to the other continents. I remember bringing my character from Prophecies to Faction, there's a few missions before where you are still between Prophecies characters, then a cool mission where you get to rejoin with another group made of Factions characters, and from then it was all merged.

Ya, I really wish ppl doing vids like this would do a little more research. Ofc they admit to recognizing that "games from this time often required that you pay mire attention" lol. It was less that they required it, more that they rewarded it. Ppl are used to not paying attention because games didn't create engaging reasons to. Games like GW1, UO asked that you put mire thought and attention in, but rewarded it well. Games like GW1 created players that just expect more depth, I guess. Or the deep puzzles of The Secret works, before everyone just googled every answer to complete a quest. Man that was such a ride, lol. Their studio literally created bogus websites of the towns the story took place in so that ppl would Google it to get history to solve a riddle and not be able to tell what was actual game, what was actually not, hehe. Brilliant and maddening! I mean, you only have to DL each zone once. Then it's instant, lol

The download is a bit weird in the beginning yes, but at the time it was quite a nice feature. Internet speeds were not that great, and their download system worked in a way that it would download zones you would most probably move to next, to avoid having to download everything at once. Also, since it was dynamic, it could patch a zone on the fly... meaning you didnt have to exit and open the game again (unless it was an .exe patch) Having said that, there is an undocumented command you can add to the game shortcut (-image) to force it to download all at once.

The game gets a lot of depth with systems like the Heroes, which basically allow you to build secondary characters to flesh out your party with. Just awakened a memory in me. For my 12th or 13th birthday, I got this game as a gift from my parents. I was so excited to play it. The advertisements were amazing looking to me, and the biggest appeal was that I thought I could play an MMO without a monthly subscription fee (which my parents would never pay for). I installed the game onto my family's old Gateway PC running on Windows 98, and when I first turned it on the graphics were all messed up. There were no loaded textures. You could see the players and NPC's, but they were just like blank polygonal ghosts with no features. The landscape was very basic. Text boxes opened, and I tried to talk to other people to see if they could help me fix it and everyone just said that my PC was probably not strong enough to run the game. I was devastated. Now might be the time to finally play the game and satisfy that childhood dream.

By far, the best 3 features were: 1. Dual class system 2. Extremely competent AI companion system (something you didn't get to fully experience and I have never found the like in ANY game ever) 3. The Factions and Nightfall campaigns also have their own tutorial zones, which have MUCH faster pacing. Especially in factions you can get to max level and max gear in a handful of hours, if you want. Regardless of the campaign you start in, >90% of the game is max level content, which to this day is a really interesting concept imo. The enemies still get progressively stronger the further you get into the game, while your only ways of getting stronger are getting better at playing your character and making stronger party compositions/builds.

I started playing this game last year during lockdown and this happened to be a hidden gem. The starting area you were in is very popular because there are events going on and if you level up to level 20 in this tutorial area without dying, you get a legendary title (and this is the hardest achievement in game that can take months). Game is highly populated while the playerbase is mature, we even had people over 50 in my guild. As for the gameplay, you didn't get to it really. Gameplay revolves around you commanding your party of heroes or henchmen like dnd party where you manage skills, stats and equipment of your heroes as if they were your own character, quests are mostly about clearing zones, killing zone bosses or escort, it's basically like WoW, but every location is a dungeon. The game has the most unique skill learning system, I've ever seen. You need to hunt down unique mobs that are hard to beat, then basically suck out of them skills (it's hard to explain), or get skills as quests rewards or buy them from npcs and considering your character can change his second class (characters have 2 classes in this game like shown in the video) any time you decide to, so you can basically have all the skills in the game under your hand. Player count is much bigger than it was shown in the video and I was really surprised as well, the problem is that capital city for players is called Kamadan, and it's a city from expansion. Talking about expansions, you made a stupid mistake. There is guild wars trilogy that comes with 2 expansions and costs the same or maybe even cheaper than just base game. Sorry for a wall of text.

GW1 was the MMO I played after I quit RuneScape back in the day. It was such a fun experience going through a beautiful 3D world for the first time, especially back then. Rolling multiple alts through Factions / Cantha, capturing elite skills, and hugging the maps for an achievement is something I’ll always fondly remember. BTW I’d bet that a lot of those players in the starting zone were level maxed 20’s, which takes a long long time to get in the tutorial because the max mob is only so high and you’d have to death camp it for hours. Once you leave the tutorial country, there’s no way of coming back so it was a badge of honor to have a maxed character in the starting zone, kind of like having a pure or skiller in OSRS.

@@tydalm.9665 Hard maybe but possible and they should have more resources then they did at the time of making gw1. Always thought guild wars 1 did a fine job with balancing or at the very least much better then in some other games. Every build had a weakness which was especially apparent in pvp. It wasn't like some games where a build could be so dominant where you could be a one man army. If the enemy team had the counter to your build they can easily shut you down with well placed interrupts, disenchant, mesmer etc. I feel the plethora of builds offered was more an asset as opposed to a deterrence personally for me and it made for some really unique builds. Some builds which centered around just running/avoiding knockdown/degen and had economies centered around basically ferrying people across certain areas/towns. It really made for an interesting dynamic between players and would say there is more pros to the old system rather then cons. I agree with the op and feel their argument is pretty shit. Just felt like they were trying to casualize the game to appeal to a broader market to be honest. They took a lot of the things that made gw1 a successful franchise/special and stripped it away...gw2 was a real let down.

Hey Peon and anyone who haven't played the game yet and has issue with downloading at every loading screen! When you right click your Guild Wars icon on the desktop, go to properties and give the "target" a -image tag after, lie || "F:\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image || so the game will download everything at once. It's a really old neat trick people used to... uh, use.. to download all the files the game has at once. Once it is done, just remove the -image tag from the end and you can re-launch it to play it freely. Also worth mentioning that the Expansions (apart from Eye of the North) are all also stand alone games, so they don't require the "base" prophecies game, they all play alone in the same-time line lore-wise! But you can get all three and link them together to unlock all campaign on one account. Prophecies is the first and original campaign and it is also worth noting that it is also the hardest (it might turn people away from the game), because it rally leans on the old-school MMO feel with less experience, harder combat, party size is really small and only increases slowly through the game, and just generally slower progress than Factions or Nightfall. If anyone needs help, feel free to reply with a question and I'll try to help you out or explain things!

Also some have mentioned it - the loading really only happens the first time you enter an area - unlike a lot of MMOs, GW1 only downloads what the player has experienced as they experience it, so the first time you enter a new area you download the files, if you go back to that area for quests or just to kill mobs the loading/download is almost nothing. Only new areas download. A game like WoW downloads everything, even if you are 100 hours away from experiencing it - GW1 is different but it works and you get used to it.

I used to play this way back in the day, had alot of fun with the quests etc. The NPC's that follow you around actually is group play (if you didn't see the quest you accepted was one), so if you can't get anyone else to join your party it gets filled with AI NPC's that actually do a surprisingly good job. Keep up the great work and can't wait to see the next one :)

best feature by far (that you haven't encountered) was the fact you could capture skills from dead enemies, so you had people making groups just to head out and capture a skill from a boss somewhere in the world, it wasn't part of a quest, so you made your own basically. Also you can make GW download everything in advance so you have loading times of 1 second.

This music takes me back. Man it is good. When you get a bit deeper I to the game you get to interact more with the skill system. The 8 skill hotbar was seen as a limitation by wow players, but really it made you focus on a build and playstyle. This also allowed for lower cool downs and allowed for more synergy and gives you a LoL type of combat. The low level cap was to reduce the time to the end game, and you would instead hunt for your skills rather than grind to level. It makes the progression very satisfying. The end game itself was a mix of some great PvP modes that were very build focused, and very difficult dungeons grinding out rare mats for sick cosmetics. I really like the design of this game and would love to see an MMO walk in it's footsteps.

Been trying out a lot of indie MMOs that look similar, people still want this kind style of MMO and are tired of pay to win. You either have to regress back a decade to an older game, or check out indie MMOs hoping to relive your glory days.

GW1 isn't dead, if you want top quality non-pay2win with deep story and excellent combat, GW1 is it. GW2 is different but also great. They both put the wider mmo scene to shame.

Guild Wars was an outstanding game back in 2005. The loading of the files was just the first time you loaded a zone. Guild Wars worked in a way that was different than most online games back then as you did not need to download the entire game to start playing the game. It would download the assets the first time you entered a zone. After a while playing the game it was not a problem. It was better since with slow internet some games would take an entire day to download but with GW you would download the exe and you were good to go. Also the game would update just the exe when it was updated the assets were updated when you entered a zone. In the first month it was updated almost daily. I had such a great time playing this game i have very found memory of it. Definitely one of the best game i ever played.

I swear the combat system in GW1 is one of the best ever, I was always so shit at the game but it was still so much fun and so cool as you could just jump in to pvp on a pvp only character and actually have an impact.

What I absolutely loved about GW1 was the customisable heroes I got to fill my party out with, I don't know how many heroes there are in total off the top of my head but I could have all slots in a party filled with my customized heroes, 7 in my full party (12 in certain factions elite areas). I got to decide everything for them from items to their two classes to the 8 skills they used for a particular mission, I hard moded the entire game with them. Over 10k hours playing from 2006 to mid 2010s. MMO as football manager, where the manager also plays if he wants too, alot of the time I let my heroes do the work lol.
