UPDATED VIDEO PRIMER: • Guild Wars 2: The Heal...
So many healers/supports in the game, with some many mechanical differences. Let's look at all of them and see how they are shaping up in the more modern day Guild Wars 2. Hopefully you can use this to help you choose a class, and get a glimpse of what you might like.

I am 2 month into GW 2. The first month I played a necro healer bcs I was the noobest of the noobs at dealing damage. Even when I got the reaper, I still was the noobest of the noobs. So I began to revive, heal and buff everyone.Now I play my class properly, but still, it was so fun, I didn't know what do to, and I did what I could to help. 🍻

and hopefully arenanet's supposid patch they'll be doing soon not only makes this video irrelevant but improves each characters ability to "Support" and while unlikely remove the plate wearing classes ability to support other players. Doing a class that can take more damage should NEVER be strictly inferior to a class that can take less damage, But here we are.

Loved watching the video, is a good start to learning the healers! Was disappointed I didn't see Heal Quick scrapper though xD gives quickness with gyros, insane condi cleanses, and insane heals with Med kit & elixer gun, not to mention the utility from the function gyro. Underrated xD. Heck even Heal Catalyst although both of these are probably underrated. Heal catalyst even more lol.

@citrineconjurer
@citrineconjurer Год назад
A small note, healer tempest generally does not overload water (at least from what I've seen and played). You do switch to and from water a lot, but you only overload it in dire situations because you need to swap into it constantly to keep healing up. Overloading water locks you out of it and therefore from healing for too long. Instead you overload every other element and swap into water between each element to cast 1-2 heal skills and refresh the passive healing. Basically it goes fire, overload, water, air, overload, water, earth, overload, water, repeat. Overloading water is so dangerous since it takes way too long to gain access to water again and leaves you with only 2 abilities to heal allies with (heal skill and Rebound). It does really need a better way to give alacrity though because you have to fully complete a long channel for it right now. If it gets interrupted in any way, you're in for a rough bit without alacrity. I really hope they do something to fix that as it feels really bad to not be able to react to things as a healer.

Hey Kroof. Great summation of support/heal specs that are available! Would you also happen to have sample build templates for each, that highlight their support and heal capabilities? Even if it's just standard open world builds. Those at least can be used as launching platforms for other game modes. There are places like metabattle, of course, but it's sometimes difficult to tell if those builds are kept up to date, as most of them have been there for a while. So even if you just put the "must have" traits and abilities if you want to be support/heals on a particular profession.

Great summary. I think your ratings could have been a bit more spread out, because I don't think that 5 of the 7 specs in this list should fall into the 8-10 rating category. Maybe having sub-ratings for specific things (healing / boons / utility / gameplay) would help with the ratings as well, as you can differentiate better. Scourge for example would get a medium/low rating for healing; low rating for boons, but by far the highest for utility (due to the rez capability) and then the overal rating will also be more organic. Good vid overal though :)

My main heal is Heal Alac Tempest. However, Firebrand is insanely more versatile as I can Lego myself to every encounter, because I have plenty of access to aegis, resistance, stability and projectile block, as well as extra healing and cc. I have DEFAULT access to all of these things from my tomes and weapon skills but can slot in even more based on the encounter without any sacrifices. It's the most fun healer I've played yet because I can comfortably make meaningful choices. Frankly Firebrand should be the first choice for anyone looking to play an allround healer unless they are tied to their current spec.

I’m more into PVP but I believe Vindicators do get quickness. It’s through the st victor offensive trait line (red ability bar F3, forget the name atm). It’s an AOE that damages foes, granting more quickness and fury for each one hit.
@reson8
@reson8 Год назад
I disagree that healing specs should have alac and not quickness. In my opinion, a support spec should have high-permanent might, fury, swiftness and protection uptime with dips into vigour, resolution, resistance and aegis. A heal spec should have as much of that as possible, combined with healing and alac OR quickness. I do miss the old chronotank build with limited, localised healing (wells) but had quickness AND alacrity permanently, and i do chafe at tempests having to choose to optimise healing at the expense of alacrity. I do love my healscourge but it will never be a solo healer as long as players stand in red aoe's :)

Hiiii!! As a new player, I want to both enjoy the class but also start out on a class that can play the healer/support role (and be good for duos). I've been looking for videos and yours pops up and I'm so happy I found it! Am worried though because newer videos say that some of these classes right now, like the scourge Necro, aren't very good healers and I was about to choose that one as my first class.. Would you mind doing an updated video some time? Orrr can you tell me which ones are good and bad right now? I don't want to level a character and be told that I have to play like dps or something because my class sucks at support. Tempest seems like so much fun from what I've seen, but a lot of people say it's the most complex and I'm not sure if I should pick that up as a first class/healer to play when I don't even know the very basics of the game. xD Thank you for your videos though! As I am mostly playing a tempest, if I play a healer, here are some thoughts on your take: First of all, a great overview! Also the ideas for a different apllication of alacrity are pretty neat, I like them. Now, I have to be a bit rougher on the details: Tempest does NOT provide its healing through excessive use of the water attunement, nor the water overload. You never ever press that overload, except for VERY sticky situations or very well planned strategies. What you actually do ist keep up boons by swapping through the attunements, and ever so often dip back into water to refresh the ""soothing mists" buff on your subgroup. Together with your heal shout and the water signet, as well as the water elite elemental (if needed at all), this provides more than enough healing to soloheal every encounter in the game. Having the grandmaster traits "compete" (auraheal vs alacrity) may seem unfortunate at first, but the healing a tempest provided before the patch was simply insane, and even now it is still one of the best, if not the best (when playing frostbow) healer (looking at raw healing capabilities) in the game.
@sid3tontimes
@sid3tontimes Год назад
HAT has highest raw heals in game but the sustained aoe heals are only from water element . Also always rebound> elemental in specialization slot ,it works wonders even with heals , aura or wipes. The elemental is squishy and will die in 4-5 aoe hits.The other drawback for HAT was maintaining alacrity with overload which increases your CD on the attunement itself so u always need to maintain buffs with warhorn 4 of earth element which is a long cd in itself Cant freely swap between them after overload like the other elite specs on ele .

@borat2672
@borat2672 Год назад
In general, you can equip any 1 handed weapon (paired with shield ofc. as other off hand weapons do not provide any real group benefits but more damage related) for heal firebrand to match your needs: 1 Scepter for soft cc, some might application and range attacks access (not really great choice cuz mostly you need to stick to your group that in 99% cases are staying close to the boss); 2 Mace is great for group block, extra regeneration access and some passive healing from auto attacks (don't forget to pick the relevant trait to enhance it's effectiveness); 3 Sword is amazing for mobility and frontal block for yourself, while providing the fury for your group; 4 Axe is great for pulling group of enemies and for cc in general (which can be enhanced within firebrand traits, but it will reduce your quick application potential) and gives access to fury for your group. So it's quite situational and maybe you might even equip a hammer/great sword if you're mad enough :D

I agree that the way some professions aply the boons need a change to be more fluid. The thing I disagree about is that specs that give quickkness should give alac instead. IMO there should be more even split and more healers should give quickess so there is space for both quickness dps and alac dps in the party. I think heal scrapper is a viable choice that you skipped and helps with evening out this split.

I dont know if anyone has even said this.. but when Virtuoso came out and was teased I thought that it was going to be a support spec. Like a bard of some sort. Using a shortbow or longbow that looks like a harp and instead of their f1-4 doing some kind of dmg it would instead play a song that did different types of healing and buffs. They could have access to facets like herald, but you dont just blow ur load and release them instantly like you do now. It would be more methodical. Not rly sure what ANET was thinking by adding more DPS specs when there was already 2, just like they did to warrior.... I thought warrior would have some kinda RAGEY MONK spec that did boons (support DPS) of some sort. Give em double focus weapons and they just punch the hell out of their enemies, like a brawler. You could even make it have an option to be tanky. But all this sounds like FUN and we know FUN isnt allowed in MMOs anymore.

Heal scrapper is missing, but in general it's the same awful design as current herald in terms of boon application, when you need to spam your gyros to maintain quickness, while firebrand does it much better. Though the healing part is quite the same situational easy to use as the heal mechanist, but without passive shield application. The strong side of heal scrapper against heal mechanist is definitely extra access to cleansing and to fields with scrapper gyros. And they can revive up to 5 people (but mostly function gyro used to maintain quickness, so it's quite difficult to get it ready when needed) In general, when it's up to fill heal quick slot - I'd rather go on heal firebrand than suffer on scrapper, unless it will be better for certain mechanics.

Vindicator feels like it was designed to fill a "flex" role that the overarching game design unfortunately doesn't really accommodate, where they would be a DPS most of the time but swap to healing when the squad is in danger, as they get a not insignificant boost to healing output when low due to the free Empire Divided trait. Due to a variety of factors both in their kit and in the structure of endgame content it really just...doesn't work for them.

With the recent changes to elementalist and tempest I would move it to atleast to 9 because: Lucid Singularity: This trait now causes overloads to pulse alacrity while channeling in addition to granting alacrity when channeling is completed. The total amount of alacrity granted remains the same. Water Blast: This skill can now target allies. Geyser: Increased heal attribute scaling from 1.0 to 1.25 in PvP and WvW. Frozen Ground: This skill now grants frost aura to allies in the area when the field is created. Healing Rain: This skill now heals allies for each condition removed. Increased conditions removed per pulse from 1 to 2 in PvE only. Recent patch did elementalist good.

I love the video but it seems strange you neglected to mention heal scrapper. I know heal mech is all the rage but they exist, too!

I agree with most of your criticism on this video, however, I don't agree that all healers should only give alacrity. If they did, then offensive support builds that give alac would never be wanted in squads. Also, um, what happened with Heal Scrapper?? Totally a viable and good healing spec AND gives quickness!
@KROOF
@KROOF Год назад
Well logically those DPS specs that give alacrity (ex. Willbender) would be changed to grant quickness, so that they still have a slot in group. Alacrity and Quickness are at an equivalent level of “we need this” so it doesn’t really matter what it does, it will always be required in a group. Tailoring them more strongly to a “role” might make things more simple for forming groups etc. scrappers themes does not lend itself to a healer as strongly as mechanist, it’s more DPS/bruiser. So for the sake of the video I stuck with those specs that boldly integrate support into: skills, profession mechanic, trait themes, and choices.

@@KROOF It's okay to just take a L every now and again. While not particularly great supports in PvE, it is still better to bring than a Scourge or Vindicator. It brings half the skills that Ham does anyway... And can provide a lot of cleansing when needed with whirl finishers. Might as well list all options is all I am saying. Otherwise you could just have said Druid and Healbrand, end of video. You even talked about about Herald and Vindicator even, makes no sense when Renegade is still much better right now.

Oh I guess I can main my mechanist as my healer then. I hated leveling engineer so I boosted it and got a full celestial armor set with runes and sit-ups which was cool. Didn’t have to farm verdant brink like I did on my weaver. Not that that was so bad but it was rather expensive getting accessories and rings and what not. And I still don’t have digits and runes on my weaver yet. Not even sure how to go about doing that.

I wish I could figure out if I'm just bad at HAM or if people just stand in stuff they shouldn't be. Maybe both. It's probably both.

Scourge has been the standard raid healer for so long, I don't think it ever was below S tier honestly. Druid have an amazing track record too and firebrand ain't that far either. Also, Scrapper is the WvW officially healer thank to his superspeed buff and invi gyro.

Honestly my main struggle is that firebrand seems objectively better than tempest (or most other support/healers, for that matter, at least to the general concensus of players) but it's just soooo boring... and I don't even know why - plate armor, shields, healing, support, utility, it's literally right up my alley, but I don't enjoy it...

it's one of the best healer's in the game especially if your with less experienced players, it still has all the barrier and revive goodness but can also give good boons now so you aren't sacrificing any squad damage by running it

Heal/quick builds exist to pair with alac/dps builds. A healbrand would be paired with an alac mirage for example which is a spec that can't heal. So if they made all healers alac providers then support dps builds like alac mirage would never see any play in group content. For that reason I'm very surprised Heal Scrapper isn't mentioned. Great heals with med kit just like mechanist, res people with function gyro just like scourge, aoe mobile stealth field to skip trash in fractals, bulwark gyro letting you tank for your team and last but not least perma quickness and superspeed. It's a solid healer with great utility and any heal mechanist should have that build on hand in case their support dps is an alac provider like mirage, renegade, willbender, mechanist, or specter.

I always thought the Chronomancer was a 5/10 healer with the wells and Alacrity or Quickness.

I feel the same, perhaps a small buff on the healing power scaling could help the build, but utilities and focus shine for macanisms and the possibility to choose quick or alac ... not a best have but relevant too

Have to disagree on the Fireband, the ability of STAB alone is a huge benefit. Healer is my main in Fractals and WvW. The Low intensity Healbrand is pretty good. I found Shout warrior very good in WvW the healing, condi removal along with Hammer for crowd control

Would a weaver be considered a healer if you’re good at it? Or is weaver more of a selfish heal class? I haven’t done any group content yet so I’m not sure.

I would have to disagree with you about mesmers lacking healing elites. Chronomancers, with All's Well That Ends Well and Stretched Time, can work... heh, well, as healers, as All's Well gives all chrono wells a bit of healing(though even at lvl 80 it's not all that much), and Stretched Time provides the much-desired alacrity, meaning that you can spam your wells on enemies and have your melee-focused allies pick up alacrity and a bit of healing, easily fitting as a support healer. Add in Restorative Mantras, Restorative Illusions(which heals allies through Healing Prism) and Illusionary Inspiration from the core Inspiration spec and you can have a chrono mesmer as a decent healer that also provides your group with alacrity. And as a bonus, Stretched Time also gives Tides of Time shield skill the ability to give alacrity, though without healing. Of course, chrono can only heal that way on land, as both specter and chronomancer wells do not function underwater(unlike necro wells and scrapper gyros that do), which is the only downside to them.
