Everybody talks about Coria's choke in the 2004 French Open Final, and Federer's "choke" in the 2019 Wimbledon final, but there are certain details. Coria started to suffer leg cramps around the third set. That's enough to ruin anyone's game. And Federer didn't really choke, he just didn't make those two match points he had, and also had to deal with Novak Djokovic on the other side of the net. That's a nightmare for anybody. But it seems that the comments are coming from people too young to remember a real choke. 1984 French Open. John McEnroe in his best season ever with a record 82-3 in matches, along with 2 Grand Slams (Wimbledon and the US Open), 13 tournament wins, and the year end championship (then called "The Masters"). He was invincible. But in Roland Garros, in the final, he was the favorite, up 2 sets to love in the third set against Lendl, got pissed off at a cameraman, and went on mental hiatus. Lendl won in 5 sets, his first big one. That final still haunts McEnroe. Worst choke ever, and from the best player in the world at that time.

Andy Murray just posted that Coria was his favourite player when he was a teenager. What a compliment! Guille played only 3 seasons at the top (ended his career with ONLY 24 yrs old!), but in those 3 years he made a lot of magic. A true genius with a racquet

@jeresosa9744
@jeresosa9744 3 года назад
@@gonzalotellogalvan6124 Yes, he anounced officially his retirement at 27 (2009), but if you check the stats, he barely played from 2006 onwards. Even playing challengers. In those 3 years he won just almost 15 matches (15!) and lost almost 30. In 2009 he played only ONE match (the last one). So, for me, Guille didn´t feel like competing long before 27, in fact, his last normal season was 2005 (at 23), but he tried those years to find a solution. That didn´t happen

Theres probably an alternate universe somewhere where Nadal and Coria faced off in the French open final for 10 years in a row, that's genuinely how much them at their best were better than everyone else on clay.
@lotus630
@lotus630 3 года назад
that's a bit of an exaggeration, between 2004 to 2014: both Federer and Djokovic are clearly better than Coria Ferrer is probably around the same level Soderling is not consistent, but between 2009 to 2010 he can give anyone trouble on clay Davydenko is pretty darn good on clay as well so even without the mental breakdown, Coria is not gonna find much joy in those 10 years
@hernanbusso1609
@hernanbusso1609 3 года назад
@@lotus630 He was speaking strictly on clay. Coria won like 40 matches in a row on the surface and went toe to toe with Nadal best of 5. Not many players can say that. I don't think Federer and Djokovic are clearly better than Coria on clay at their best. Sure, they had far superior longevity and are far superior on hard courts on grass. But at their best on clay Coria is as good.
@hernanbusso1609
@hernanbusso1609 3 года назад
@@lotus630 Soderling maybe when he's on fire is better, but it's not like he can replicate his performance against Nadal in 2009 consistently. That type of style might work occasionally but not on a regular basis, that's why he couldn't do it again in 2010 and 2011, not even close. Ferrer is super consistent but doesn't have the weapons to trouble the big guys.
@lotus630
@lotus630 3 года назад
@@hernanbusso1609 everything you said about Coria being just as good as Djokovic and/or Federer on their best on clay is at best "debatable" let's not forget during the same time that Coria was supposedly at his best and troubling Nadal, he lost to Federer twice on clay and couldn't even get to a deciding set but that's straying from the point already, the point is Adrian thinks Coria, without the mental breakdown, could dominate the French Open along with Nadal for 10 years (2004 - 2014) because he was supposedly "that much better than everyone else"... and that is just not true
@hernanbusso1609
@hernanbusso1609 3 года назад
@@lotus630 Yes, but the match was in Hamburg which is the fastest clay and more similar to HC. That's why Federer won there in 2002 when he wasn't very good on clay yet, and he got his first win against Nadal there as well. I think at RG or Montecarlo Coria would have beaten Federer in 2003/2004. Obviously, he wouldn't have "dominated" with Nadal though, Nadal was the only one that could dominate there, but if Coria had gotten the title in 2003 or 2004 I think he could have done great the following years. And if he had closed the match against Nadal in Roma he would have done much better at RG that year. Another issue is Coria got an unfair doping suspension when he was 19, if not he would have risen far earlier in his career (he was 19 and top 20 or so) and he would have had more oppurtinities to win it before Nadal showed up.
@saz6950
@saz6950 Год назад
I wish to hear from him in what really happened to his mind in the Roland Garros Final 2004 . He had personal issues as well I know that but who doesn't . He should have worked more hard and upgrade his level after losing to Nadal. He had a pretty decent height and should have worked on his serve as well even before the service yips he had. Sometimes Counter Puncher cannot last against offensive baseliners and that coria had to change. I can't name one Counter Puncher who was a great player other than Hewitt who couldn't won anything big after 2003 Indian Wells Master Series. People who didn't won grand slam are better than guys like him e.g Fernando Gonzalez, David Nalbandian, Jo Wilfred Tsonga . We all thought Gilles Simon would bring something back to France after a long time but then again Counter Punchers like him were same players like Guillermo Canas who can upset world no.1 once or twice but are not good in the long run.

Who is the player whose name is shortened to CAL in the clips from the Hamburg Masters? I feel like it should be very obvious but I’m just drawing a blank. Help me out!

It's Agustín Calleri. Fun fact: the Hamburg Masters in 2003 had an all-Argentinian semi-final line-up: Gaudio v Coria, Nalbandian v Calleri

Tennis TV thank you! I knew every other player on sight, but CAL didn’t ring a bell, didn’t recognize groundstrokes or serve, etc.
