The great organist Jean Guillou plays a part of the "Allegro" from the Symphonie n°6 from Charles-Marie WIDOR with a Guillou's cadenza !!! Very interesting composition on the great organ van den heuvel in Sait Eustache - Paris
as a pianist i love organ music, esp. Bach, Widor and Dupre and Alain and Messiaen. i love the sound of all those pipes. i used to listen to the Wanamaker live back in the old days so maybe that sound stuck with me. this is great, i love Guillou, like the way he plays the Goldbergs too.organists are supposed to be daring, not boring. i played a concert wher Cochereau improvized fot about 40 minutes with a fugue at the end, its becoming a lost art.
Jean Guillou played in Montreal last year. It was a wonderful event. He let the music speak for itself. I will always remember this evening of artistry. Bravo M Guillou !!!!!
I know some think that this is not how Widor is supposed to sound. I think, however, that this cadenza displays some of the puckishness characteristic of parts of the Allegro vivace of the 5th Symphony, without totally abandoning the majestic quality that this the 6th displays throughout. Widor himself was not beyond improvising a cadenza, on occasion, to various pieces (usually Bach apparently) during a concert, or so I was told by those who had heard him play. Guillou is so talented. I'm afraid his eccentricities have kept him from getting the wider recognition he deserves as a performer, master technician, improvisateur, and pedagogue.
I have this "version" of Widor's Allegro at Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco)in 1984 along with St-Saens Symphonie avec orgue; for doing this cadenza, Jean Guillou had to be the one, and he gave it a remarkable original result, whatsoever the critics say again! JW
L'interprétation est géniale avec une construction du discours très claire. Maître Guillou cherche à restituer la dramaturgie de la pièce. La registration est très adaptée et équilibrée. Effectivement les anglo-saxons qui s'expriment ici ont l'habitude d'aimer les registrations tonitruantes et souvent agressives. Quant-à la cadence elle est bien à sa place : une cadence n'est pas l'ajout de quelques mesures dans la pièce mais elle suspend la pièce pour démontrer l'habileté de l'interprête ce qui est indiscutablement le cas ici et à renforcer le suspense du discours musical. C'est donc une interprétation magistrale.
Bravo Maître, c'est toujours un plaisir et une élévation que de vous entendre. Je viendrai, le 29 Octobre prochain, lors de votre venue à Marseille au Grand Orgue des Réformés.

Un maître c’est un maître, il y a de la logique dans les impro car le fil conducteur existe et n’est pas oublié au fil de l’impro comme beaucoup d’organistes qui au terme de l’impro ont oublié la mélodie du début....
Couldn't agree more that we're different individuals now; however, if Guillou's performance WAS an improvement, I'd agree with your views on tradition. Roth's performance has one on the edge of one's seat (wonderful interpretation of the composer's thoughts); Guillou's, on the other hand, makes one wonder 'why bother'. And adding a cadenza isn't exactly new - Handel was doing it in his organ concerti nearly three centuries ago...
I found it nice to listen too, as I guess all the Guillou fans. That's why he is the most famous organist in the world! You should get a tribune in a famous cathedral and do better...I'll be your fan!
for those commenters who think they can improvise better than this man from any passage of their choice of Widor's 6th allegro let's see you doing better ! Come on seriously do it record yourself and post on youtube then let us comment... Improvising goes hand in hand with composing. And it is no coincidence that great work come from an era when improvising was well regarded whereas now it has become a lost tradition. thanks to the macabre mentality that thinks works are inert. wrong !
Je pense que Frantz Lizt s'il etait toujours vivant aurait improvise une telle cadenza, cela s'appelle creation artistique. De plus, cela ne gache rien quand c'est agreable a ecouter...
THIS is what mr. Guillou should do and have done more... In stead of those uhm.. "rather atonal pieces"- Seems to me more of a continuation of the french organ culture than anything done today on french organs......
An interesting experiment, but I don't like it that much. It sounds better as written, I think. Guillou's style is unusual, and it produces some interesting renditions for academic purposes, but this isn't one of them; a more traditionalistic interpretation of the Widor 6th is superior to my ears. That said, kudos on that ridiculous pedalwork. I may not like it, but it's a feat nonetheless. Incidentally, is it just the recording, or is the acoustic inside Saint Eustache really, really awful?
Ahah, les commentaires des Ayatollahs de la musique classique... Moi qui ai fait 10 ans de conservatoire et qui ai travaillé à tout oublier tellement ça fait vomir lorsque l'on aime vraiment la musique. Mon professeur d'orgue n'aimait pas Jean Guillou. Il disait "Il n'a qu'à composer sa propre musique plutôt que de détruire les oeuvres des autres". Et le plus sérieusement du monde il me disait régulièrement et le plus sérieusement du monde être le meilleur organiste du monde et avoir atteint le sommet de son art. Peut-être ceux qui l'ont eu le reconnaîtront. Une personne sympathique par ailleurs qui m'a laissé autant très bons que de très mauvais souvenirs par ailleurs. Bref. La conception de la musique frise le fanatisme religieux dans le microcosme de la musique classique (la seule et unique musique valable, au demeurant, pour ces intégristes), rempli plus d'artisans ennuyeux que d'artistes inspirés. Alors forcément, lorsque quelqu'un bouscule leurs petits à-priori, leur petite conception invariable de la musique, ça les met hors d'eux. Car ils se sont torturé le cerveau pour aller chercher des nombres d'or par ci, des calculs, des formes, une logique dans quelque chose dont la logique interne dépasse le cerveau humain, et un homme arrive, avec sa démarche particulière, un style vestimentaire qui n'est pas commun, une façon de parler un peu... efféminée, un peu maniérée, il joue comme il l'entend, comme ça lui vient, se moquant bien des préceptes théoriques qui ne riment à rien, il joue. Point. Et c'est formidable ce qu'il joue, car ça plaît à des gens. Il a fait du bien à l'âme de millions de personnes. À tout ceux que la musique impressionne ou fait peur à cause de l'angoisse du regard de la caste lourde et imbue de la musique classique. N'oubliez pas que l'on parle de musique. C'est à dire une suite de sons et de silences qui plaisent à certains, qui déplaisent à d'autres, mais surtout qui doit vous plaire à vous. Faites ce qu'il vous plaît, ce que vous entendez dans votre tête, n'ayez pas plus peur d'un "professionnel" de la musique que d'un roumain accordéoniste dans le métro. Car n'importe qui qui a de la musique dans la tête est un grand musicien. Seulement tous n'ont pas le cerveau assez docile et le porte-monnaie assez rondouillet, pour faire des études, des cours magistraux et remporter des diplômes et être reconnus par la caste, et avoir la possibilité de faire sortir par le son la musique qu'ils ont dans l'esprit. Le génie est dans chacun d'entre nous. Qui ne vous dit pas que l'air qui trotte dans la tête du clochard au coin de votre rue, c'est une mélodie qui pourrait faire le tour du monde ? Et puis on parle de musique, la musique ne doit pas s'abaisser à être quelque chose de sérieux, ça doit rester un partage de l'âme, un épanchement, c'est quelque chose qui dure très peu, qu'est-ce que c'est qu'une note par rapport à l'infini du temps... Qu'est-ce que c'est que 3 minutes d'improvisations, d'expérimentations sur une oeuvre... Vous croyez vraiment que c'est ça qui va changer la face du monde ? On fait ce qu'on veut tant que l'on abîme pas matériellement l'instrument, le reste, une oeuvre on ne peut pas l'abîmer. On ne fait qu'ajouter une pierre à l'édifice, on ne peut pas détruire de la musique. Les partitions et les instruments sont toujours là pour ceux qui veulent les jouer texto. Voilà voilà, c'était une petite réflexion du soir de quelqu'un qui a passé 10 ans de Concert-va-t'asseoir, pour finalement se rendre compte que la musique c'est purement et uniquement sentimental. Parler de théorie musicale, c'est brasser du vent dans le vide. La musique ça ne s'étudie pas, ça s'exprime, c'est là et puis c'est tout.
J'adore Jean Guillou. J'ai eu la chance immense d'entretenir une correspondance avec lui et de le rencontrer à sa tribune le dimanche matin et pour le "petit" récital dominical de fin d'après-midi. Il était d'une gentillesse et d'une modestie rares. La description que vous faites du Maître lui colle à merveille. Merci pour lui !
To call this an "interpretation" of Widor completely re-defines that word. This is a complete re-writing of Widor. It's not Widor, it's not even Guillou playing Widor, it's Guillou with few few Widor-like embellishments.
I agree 100% AdvisorC101, and I hasten to add that this man is deranged. Are we for a nanosecond supposed to believe that this is a viable performance of this masterpiece? If that is the intention, then I am disgusting beyond words. And if it NOT the intention, then WHAT THE F#%K is?
Agreed--and I've never been there in my life! The piece is barely recognizable when he attempts to play it correctly. It is unrecognizable most of the time. Maybe this guy was a master organist at one time, but that time passed by long ago.
What a hideous, badly-registered noise. Makes a mockery of Widor, entirely unmusical and just gratuitous showing-off. I'd honestly rather hear him play his own compositions than this. It's not showing the organ in its best light either!

Once again Guillou succeded in making a caricature of a wonderfull piece,it's like he's making fun of the composer. I'm not against being original or creatif but this is really decadent(as are most of his 'interpretations') And the problem is that he produced an army of identical clones(were is there creativity?) so I'm afraid we are stuck with this noncence for quiet a while.
Disgusting. I feel very cheated knowing that this is the final result of "doing new things". In this case I'd be much happier being a "stiff-necked purist".
