This is part of a mini-series I recorded to explain guitar amplifiers. It's a massive topic because there are so many different amplifiers out there and they have so many different features and functions on them.
The most basic function of an amplifier is simply to make whatever you plug into it louder, and this is how guitar amps originated back in the day. Over time - and with technology - they have developed more and more; nowadays even some of the cheapest and most basic amps come fully loaded with great features.
I'm focusing mainly on 'Practice Amps' - these are small, inexpensive & designed (as the name suggests) for home practice. They are simple to use, lightweight & portable and are designed to be played (and sound good) at lower volume levels; making them ideal for personal practice whatever your level of experience is.
If you want to rehearse with a band or perform live you'll probably want a more powerful amplifier and possibly more features. I briefly cover larger amps at the end of the series but my focus it mostly on practice amps that would be suitable for a beginner player or someone buying their first amp.

I just can’t get a decent tone out of this. What’s a bit annoying about this amp series is that you don’t get all options to tweak the sound without a computer. E.g. noise gate can be enabled via PC only. A solid 2/5 for me who mostly needs distorted sounds.

Fair comment Jack, I agree the controls on the amp are limited and don't give you immediate access to everything like you say. I use it as a practice amp (mostly when teaching students) so it's probably more important for me to get a range of usable sounds in an affordable package - I wouldn't choose this amp for recording or gigging. I like high gain sounds but I found IMO the 'heavy' settings on this were a bit much - especially for my RGs which have a very high output, I got better results by backing off my guitar volume a little and maxing out the gain on the amp. Thanks for your comments and opinion - I've no connection with Blackstar - so it's great for anyone watching to know as much as possible before buying 👍

What's your thoughts on the effects, the onboard delay, reverb, etc.? I have been trying out reverb and delay pedals (Flamma, Donner) and think they sound better than what's built into the Blackstar.
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel 10 месяцев назад
I'm not familiar with those pedals you mentioned but I do also own some individual effects pedals and multi-effects etc. In my opinion (I think I'm agreeing with you) I think the effects pedals and dedicated multi-effects I have do sound better than the built in effects on this amp. But, with that said, all the pedals I have (except maybe my tuner) each cost more than this amp. I think that the effects on the amp are great - considering it is a practice amp and probably something a lot of people might consider for their first amp - they give you a chance to have play with basic chorus/delay/reverb effects when you're just starting out and for a reasonable price. I do prefer effects pedals for quality / adjustability (and am fortunate enough to afford them) but for a beginner or someone on a more limited budget I genuinely believe these built in effects are fine to get going with on this amp or other similar ones (I've no connection with Blackstar - I have a little Vox practice amp that is similar - there are lots of brands out there). So, yeah, I totally agree with what you're saying - and thank you for your comment 👍🎸

just got this for 80$ to pair with an epiphone sg special i got for 160$. i think it'll do me just fine as a beginner

@mattsguitarchannel Год назад
Sounds like a great choice and a good price. I know some pro & semi-pro players that use Epiphone guitars for both gigs and recording so your SG should hopefully give you many years of enjoyment. The ID Core is a fantastic practice amp for the money, loads of sounds & effects - I own 2 of them I use for teaching. Best of luck with your playing and thank you for watching my channel.

With the v3 10 is there a way to change the effects at a certain distance or do I always have to be close to the amp?
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel 10 дней назад
As far as I know you have to use the controls on the amp to make changes - there is not a way to do it using a footswitch if that is what you are asking? I like to be able to switch effects in and out remotely as well as switch amp channels (especially for live use) and that would be an awesome feature to have. I'm guessing (I don't know for sure) that because it is a 10w practice amp it's probably designed more for beginner players practicing one part at a time - it's probably not loud enough for live use with a band. Thank you for watching my channel and for your interesting comment, I hope I've given a good answer for you, please feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Is the amp battery powered and if so how does it charge?
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel 9 месяцев назад
Sorry for the delay in replying. It's not battery powered as standard but, as far as I know (I haven't tried this) is can be powered from an external battery pack such as the Blackstar PB1 - it may be possible to power it from other devices but I don't know. Hope this is helpful and thank you for your comment.

hello do you recommend this amp for live shows?im playing in a small coffee shop and wondering if 10 watts is enough.
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel Год назад
Hi, thanks for watching. I'd say (probably) yes - based on what you have said, it really depends on the size of the venue and the background noise. Also if you're going to be playing other shows (not just the small coffee shop) in future you might want to consider something more powerful. If you want I can record a short demo of the amp cranked up if that might be helpful for you - just let me know?

Sup! Boss katana 50 or blackstar core ID 20 V3 for practice in room? Thanks!
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel Год назад
I've not played the Katana so I can't comment on it directly. Generally speaking I think Boss products are very good, I have an ME-80 multi, and IMO the Boss effects sound better than the BS ID Core. The 50w would obviously give you more headroom if you wanted to transition from room practice to bands / gigs later. My best advice to you would be to try and audition both amps if possible to get the 'feel' of them. Thanks for your comment!

Buy a 40 watt if you want to play medium gigs
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel Год назад
Great advice. I'd also add that different amps (of the same wattage) can vary depending on manufacturer and whether they are valve/tube or solid state. More wattage gives you extra headroom on solid state amps - you can always turn down and get the same sound. Valve amps often need to be 'cranked' to sound best which isn't always possible in smaller venues - lots of valve amps now have a 'low power' mode to help overcome this.

@@mattsguitarchannel thanks Matt. But if you need to play silenced / quiet mode because of your neighbours would you still recommend the 40 or the 20? Can you town down the 40 to a level of silence or is it not possible?
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel Год назад
@@Evil.Turkey The ID Core 40 you can turn down and it will sound just the same because it's modelling / solid state - there is no benefit in cranking it. To use another example from the Blackstar range; the Club 40 has valves / tubes and really needs to be pushed more to get the best sounds from it - it also features a 4 watt mode but (in my opinion) that is still pretty loud for bedroom practice. The Club is significantly more expensive than the ID Core range. This will be pretty much the same for all manufacturers. Hope this helps!

@@mattsguitarchannel thanks again Matt. It sure does help. So basically there is no need for me to choose the 20watt model over the 40 watt model. I also heard that the 20 had some issues with humming.
@mattsguitarchannel
@mattsguitarchannel Год назад
@@Evil.Turkey Always happy to help where I can. With solid-state amps it really makes no difference what the max power rating is, you can turn them down low and the sound is more or less the same. I once owned a Line 6 HD147 (300w) and it was perfectly fine playing at practice volume. I also owned a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier (all valve / tube) which only sounded good when I pushed it - I literally could not use it in the house lol! I've not owned the 20w so I can't comment on the humming. Sometimes this can be caused by a guitar wiring issue (poor ground connection) or mains supply issue. After you mentioned this I had a quick search and someone in a forum said they had humming that went away when they touched the strings or hardware on the guitar - I would suggest that is a guitar issue. Please feel free to comment or DM if you need any more help, and thank you for supporting my channel 👍

Hi Fahad, it's definitely worth considering as a practice amplifier, I think it has good features and sounds great for the price. My advice would be to try out as many amps as you can and see which works best for you. Squier strat is a great choice - I have one myself.
