After you hear Chris Scruggs nail pretty much any country style on guitar here, remember that he is also a world-class lap steel player and got a little gig as well with pretty much THE best country band working today: Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. And he is the BASS PLAYER there. 'Nuff said. There is talent and then there is Chris Scruggs!

There ain't many guitarist like Chris ,There are guys that can tell back grounds and not play well but Chris has both at a professor level ,I'M sure everyone else that clicked play on this thought ill give it 2 minutes and was wanting 2 hrs at category 4 .Fender would be foolish not to fully endorse Chris and give him more exposure so the American guitar history is kept alive and so is the names of the players. I bet you can't ask Chris a trick question and him not know the correct awnser, An amazing player and great historian. Thank you im going to look like a genius next band rehearsal just casually popping out styles and names just to mess with the lead guitarist and deflate his ego a little ,all in the name of guitar love .

Chris Scruggs is a fantastic player. It is criminal that he's not a household name and a huge star. The man is not only a supremely gifted musician but a treasure trove of country music historical facts. What a talent!

Thanks Fender for inviting the inimitable Chris Scruggs to give a tour of country music guitar styles. I grew up on this music and still play it today. Videos like this show how exciting and deep country guitar really is. The more we get these sounds into young ears, the better chance we have of preserving it and letting it inform modern styles. There's a rich history worth digging into and Fender was a huge part of it. Thanks, Fender, for letting Chris show us how it's done..

Chris' knowledge of the Southern and Central California country (and western) music scene in the 1940s through 1960s period is impressive. I grew up there at that time and every Friday night was live music night in our family. My father was a "hillbilly DJ" (as they were called in those days) in the 40s and that's how he met my mother. From the Maddox Brothers and Rose to guitar giants like Merle Travis and Joe Maphis, Chris seems to know them all. Pretty surprising for a Tennessee boy. Now we just need him to do a segment on the Fender steel guitars. Like Chris and Kayton Roberts, I'm a Dual Pro player, but I make room for the Stringmasters as well.

The country guys are so spot on. They play stuff that makes sense, they jump in, do their thing, usually 8 bars worth and step off, blend into the rhythm and get on with the song. That's what I love about all those guys. They play like grownups. George Harrison and Elliot Easton from The Cars are great examples of how folks outside the country genre can learn from them.
