In every, and I mean EVERY video I've seen of Robben Ford he comes across as just the nicest guy in the world. Kudos to his parents for raising such a great kid/man.
@@BITESIZEJONES Come on man, do you blame him? It's for flash during shows, it's not a respectable thing to do. I really believe Robben is a humble person, but bothered by invasion of his privacy while performing for ungrateful people.
This is all before you can RU-vid search your favourite guitarist…. This must have been gold at the time and still is! Awesome lesson from one of the greats.
This was the GOLD standard in instructional tapes in the day. Start licks was ok, but REH was much sharper. You could see Robin's fingers on each string. I remember I had just bought a new color TV and High-Fi VHS player... (wait for it)... $850 for the pair!! This video sold for $60-$80 depending on who was selling it. I would rent it for a week at a time for $4. Spent 27 hours a day playing it over and over again. This Fender Ultra guitar never sold that well and my local shop was blowing them out at $600 with the case! They were the PRS, before PRS made a name for himself.
This is GOLD, thank you for uploading! 😉 (Bending 20:19) (Licks 25:19) (Slow-Mo 12 Bar Blues Key of C 33:10) (Rhythm 48:25) (Jam 53:46) That guitar is beautiful ! 39:53
I can't think of any other artist who not only shows you his licks.... but he teaches you.....and this was about 30 years ago, and to this day this Cat still shares the gold...
Wow! I was surprised to see how young he was for this presentation! He certainly grew to include more chordal scaling later in his career but those Jazz improvs are always icing on any Blues cake. I MISS the sound that only that Fender Master Series Guitar can make. I gave mine to my oldest son last year. I play it every time I visit him in L.A.
You’re correct, Dimitris. Fender intended to make some inroad on the iron grip that Gibson had with their hollow body group of guitars. The Master series were brilliantly executed. I only wish Fender was run by luthiers instead of suits. The company quit making those guitars after only a few years. The guitars are extremely rare today.
It has hollow bevels or channels running through the body, sealed inside. PRS makes one today that sounds similar but the neck on the PRS is chunky. That Fender is lean neck with wonderfully fast action and perfectly prepared frets.
I just found so fascinating having the opportunity to watch Robben at this age of his life after I got to know about the man just about 6 months ago, and already consumed all I could from what was available. :-D Handsome Gentleman! He's like the best teacher also. Thanks Hugo!
Many years ago he toured in Germany, in Cologne. After the gig he and the Yellow Jackets gave autograms written in his educational book Playin‘ The Blues. What a great person with a huge respect to music and fans. Thanks for this video!
Bless you for this! Robben Ford is one of the few contemporary blues guitarists steeped in the tradition and that pays unstinting respect to the greats that came before him. From the little bit that I've seen of him in interviews and instructional videos, he seems to be a real genuine soul and incredibly humble..... a rare trait to be seen in modern day musicians.
Robben has always had excellent articulation and phrasing, this marks out the truly expressive guitar players who are completely oblivious to matters of 'speed' and strive to play the whole instrument; I am proud to include this guy as an influence!
@@anthonydavella8350 with the blues, not so much. No real blues guy played a lot of note. Just rockers. Blues you are trying to speak a message as clearly and directly as possible. Burning through scales says I like to practice. For Yngwie it says I used up all my melodies can’t I just shred?
I love Robben!! Always have. Talk to your Daughter album to me is the blues record of our modern era. (High octane Blues at its finest). Changed my playing forever. He is phrasing is so tasty. Its always fresh and never gets old.
1:37 scales for blues soloing 13:00 fingerings 16:35 vibrato 23:58 12 bar blues solo 29:32 right hand technique 32:52 slow mo blues 37:20 chords and comping 53:45 ends
This is still his most accessible recorded lesson! Something a beginning blues guitarist can actually wrap his his head and hands around. I’ve been watching this on and off since I bought it when it came out and still find inspiration in it every time! He’s a great musician and player but sometimes gets so bogged down in theory when he’s teaching, but if that’s your thing he’s a bottomless well! Anyway great upload
This is still my favorite guitar that he ever used :) They are EXTREMELY rare. I saw one years ago with a factory-installed Kahler. It was a rare piece. I should have bought it !
Maybe they weren't selling. Can't understand why they stopped making them so soon. An absolute beauty. I don't think Robben even plays them much anymore, and it was his Signature!
It's the Fender 'Esprit'; some variation is called the 'Flame' (I don't know what the exact difference is). An absolutely beautiful axe, but they didn't make them long.
There is an awesome blues guitar player in Cincinnati who brings one out occasionally. He sold my buddy a V not too long ago, he's not coming off his signature Ford model haha!
@@Andre7717 NO after playing lead & rhythm for George Harrison's Dark Horse Tour in North America he went to Colorado to learn at Naropa Institute a type of buddhist teaching which is still his practice.
I wonder when he's improvising he thinks to himself " I'm playing G minor pentatonic on the G chord so the G is the root, the B is the b3rd, etc. and now I'm playing the C chord and the G becomes the 5th, the B the b7th, etc."
This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "learn jazz guitar standards" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Wanichael Corylexander Equalizer - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my neighbour got cool success with it.
Fender did a Robben Ford signature guitar back in the early 90's. That's what he's playing here. They still pop up from time to time on eBay, Reverb, etc..
You have a few options, you can use the same scale but land on the 4 when you go to the 4 chord, that sounds good. Or you can use the major pentatonic scale associated with the 4 chord, see what sounds good to your ears with this one. You can't really use the minor pentatonic associated with the 4 chord because the minor 3rd of that scale would be the b6 of the home key, which doesn't sound too good. On the 5 chord you can use major or minor pentatonic, mix them up!
Is this where Ralph Machio went after the Crossroads? I wonder what happened to Steve Vai. I like that version more than the real one. I still don’t get if he was the devil or the other guy lol
remember to be realistic - you will need to put in some work whichever plan you choose for learning to play Guitar I have spent months researching into playing guitar and discovered an awesome website at Guitar guru method (google it if you are interested)
While Robben Ford is one of my very favorite guitarists; and one of the finest around.... I don't think this is at all representative of his current style. I believe this is at least 12-15 years old. This seems far different that I get having seen him just this summer.
James Palermo This was recorded in 1990 & came out in 1991. Still got the old VHS tape & standard notation + tablature cookbook. Then came "The blues & beyond"about 18mth's later. Still got that too. After classical lessons since five I'm so glad to have come across those classics, pre-interweb. And this was down in Australia. Using the round edge of the plectrum/pick, comping properly etc made a lot of potential "mistake correcting" unnecessary when I got a one2one teacher for modern guitar. Robben Ford has always been the man.
This was great, I been tryin to find out about "learn blues guitar now" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Wanichael Corylexander Equalizer - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got great results with it.
I realize this sounds hugely arrogant and Robben obviously makes it work but if you only play the Gm pentatonic on the C chord you will be leaving out the 3rd, E of the C chord, E is not part of the Gm pentatonic and it is a important chord tone, if you only play the G minor pentatonic over the D chord then you will be leaving out the A of the D chord which the 5th, another important chord tone....I'm just saying.
True, but even though he mightn't have mentioned the major thirds, he plays them all through the solo in the video, e.g. the lick in bar 5 where he outlines the F7 chord nicely by bending from G (the second of F) up to A (the major third) at the start of the bar before going to the fifth, sixth and flat seventh of F and back to the fifth so that he's on C when the next bar moves to C7.
Cheers for this, been searching for "learn blues guitar free" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Wanichael Corylexander Equalizer - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate got great success with it.
I used to not know who he was and hearing his name just assumed he was a woman. Now I know why I didn’t know who he was. His influences are exactly the people who make jazz and blues seem incredibly boring and some of the most commercial jazz, ie take five, that sounds the very most like origins of dreadful smooth jazzers like Kenny G. A guitarist could go their whole life without hearing him play and miss absolutely nothing. And BB King- he is good but if i watch a concert I want to see BB King not 20 other random guys who sit on stage and play 90% of the solos. And Dumble amps… overrated, overpriced, and IMO sounds worse than average. His music is not rhythmic, it’s not moving, it doesn’t make me want to move, it doesn’t make me feel anything, it’s just “pretty.” It has none of the passion, it’s basically the watered down white version that was made to sell albums; except he obviously didn’t do a good job of selling anything except interest in ridiculously pompous amplifiers. And btw- listening to his voice, and abnormally puffy upper torso, and I am still not sure that he isn’t a woman. In old age he has bit of resemblance to Kaitlin. Not sure exactly where it’s common for men to talk like this certainly nowhere I ever went. Must be one of the places where those tough holy rolling southerners stem from. The kind of guys who confuse loving Jesus for being attracted to images of a muscular long haired ancient rock star lol.
OK. Why are you bothering to post here then if you don't like it (unless you're a troll)? Why don't you just watch RU-vid videos you like instead of wasting your time and everyone else's time by posting nasty shit here?
