This was a great interview! I became friends with Stephan a few years ago, and now I visit him about three times each summer. It's always a treat to visit him in his workshop.
You should've spent some time talking about strings. I always think about how much effort the luthier makes to make the best guitar only for guitarists to use so many different string types and gauges.
Great video. Stephan comes across as a very genuine, humble guy. A real master craftsman and artist. Beautiful guitar. The workshop looks like a dream place to create.
I think he is great but for what he charges for his guitars? I don't know about that?. It's NOT worth it. They literally hundreds of luthiers out there in Europe, Australia, ect with better prices and more elegant tone of his guitars! He is a famous great luthier with super over priced guitars. That's all! His guitars are too expensive for what they offer . It's my personal opinion.
I’m sure there is a lot of subtle details and experience that goes into every guitar that make every luthier unique. The more you charge, the more time you can invest in the build. There is a market for every price point, even if there maybe diminishing returns on what you perceive to be value. Someone paid $6million for a vintage guitar so the value is in the eyes of the beholder. I’m definitely behind Stephan charging high prices, whatever those prices are. There’s definitely a rich, smooth tone I hear with this guitar. It speaks quality that isn’t easy to replicate. You’ll also find that the more you charge, the less hassle your customer’s are. You get better clients, a better guitar and the luthier makes more money. It’s a win, win for his business.
He is a great luthier! But his prices are not anymore competitive with The moderm world of classical guitar luthiers. Maybe 10 years ago he could charge those prices. Now it's too many talented young luthier in Germany, Spain, Italy, even in Brasil!
@@tritone3284 I’ve seen many luthiers have 2-3 year waiting lists so the customer demand maybe higher than the supply. Luthiers cannot take on many clients anyway so trust and reputation can result in premium prices no matter how good other luthiers are.
