I've been a yes bads for almost 40. Funniest thing in the world are bads getting mad at bads jokes. You know this but for others: Slaughter of the Soul (at the gates) used a 2x10 and 2x12 in an X pattern in one cabinet! And that tone is legendary, glenns been obsessed with it for a long time. I’ve always wanted to throw a 2x10 on top of my ampeg guitar cabinet

in the 70s and early 80s I worked with guitar players who used Fender Super Reverb amps. A 4-10 cabinet. Not exactly a metal thing but i always felt that with the right pedal, these amps would kill. You should check one out if you can find one. A nice small combo amp that at 45 watts doesn't destroy the ears of the rest of the band or the audience.

25 years playing, I’ve bought two solars, not even top tier ones and they are badass, very practical guitar!

The info on the older cameras was great, as I was looking for something different to do and you inspired me to have a look over those cameras. I couldnt lay my hands on a Nikon D200 but I found a few Nikon D3000 for less than 120 pounds in great condition. Thanks, affordable and works for me.

To the guy asking about a mix translating to other systems, i would explain it like this: you know how to know if something is objectively/scientifically true it has to be tried and tested multiple times by multiple people, maybe in multiple ways and get the same repeatable results? Same for mixing. In a time where we have different sound systems everywhere with different qualities, dynamic ranges, sizes, locations etc. one has to test that the song sounds good enough on all of them for it to be a good mix. Many studios have, in addition to high end monitors, lower end or even desktop speakers to compare with in the same room, let alone in different acoustic locations. Headphones are also another important way to test your mix, as well as listening to the mix in mono to watch for any phase issues.

The best guitar/bass is whatever you like the sound and feel of. If it makes you want to play then it’s good. 

My favourite bass at the moment is a modified Squire Sonic Bronco. Even with new hardware it still cost less than a new Squire Classic Vibe 50s P bass. I own 10 basses and this Squire is my favourite sounding, favourite to play, favourite to record and the cheapest.

 10” speakers can be great. In my experience the Fender Hot Rod Deville 4x10 sounds better than the 2x12 version. I have a small 2x10 cab fitted with Celestion VT Junior and G10 Greenback. Originally I purchased it for home practice as it was small. I have actually used it in the studio and live because it sounds so good.

 Sometimes small speakers just sound right. The Gallien-Krueger 250ML has two 6 1/2” speakers and sounds good enough to be used on recordings by Iron Maiden, Queen , Rush, Gary Moore, Extreme and many more. It was a bit of a studio secret weapon in the 80s.

MojoTone Greyhounds are what I have in my MojoTone Slant 4x12 British Style Cab and it's plugged into my Bugera 6260 . The Greyhounds sound fantastic in this rig.

The best dual rectifier I ever heard was ran thru a shitty Marshall 410. I was young and dumb then tho and didn’t think to see what speakers were in the cab.

Speakers came up a lot in this video, So talking about speakers: out of all of the speakers I've tried (which aren't too many to be completely honest) Celestion 70/80s with the old black and white logo sound the best TO ME, out of what I've tried. Some examples of speakers I have played through are: V30s from a marshall 1960 cab, V30s in a Mesa OS 4x12, 12t-75s in another Marshall 4x12, Those Bugera speakers that come in their combos put in a Behringer 4x12, a set of Celestion G12 Rockerdriver vintage swapped into an old Marshall 2x12 which I have never seen other than in that one 2x12 cab. And finally of course my celestion 70/80s in my Randall RG100 valvedynamic and BY FAR the 70/80s are the best I've heard. These speakers don't tend to get a lot of recognition and tend to be put down for being a "Budget" speaker but my god they are not. They have incredible low end punch yet not too overwhelming so they wont clash with the bass and where they really shine is when you crank the mids on the amp. HUGE, PUNCHY, UNIQUE sound that just sounds amazing for metal, But not only metal. They work incredibly well for clean and edge of breakup tones they're vastly versatile. Most speakers mentioned previously were either in rehearsal rooms or a friends house so I haven't done the most scientific test at all, I've just gone by ear in the room. But I have mic'd up my 70/80s and compared them to speakers comparisons online which is about as scientific I can get. I would love to see them tested on the channel in a more scientific way (also those rockerdrivers would be interesting to see as well) and really hear the differences between some of the speakers you have tested already in the studio and see how well they compete or see if I'm delusional and bias towards my own personal gear. Blackstar HT5 combo MK1 came with 10" speaker, and I think it was fantastic amp for home recording, both for guitar and bass...

gonna throw this out here, i know im not gonna be the next big thing because i never put the work into being a better musician, always really playing around. so ive never felt that buying new gear would make a difference for me, Im happy with my guitars, they each fill a unique role, the amp i have is good enough, i have a good tuning pedal, roll credits. i feel like if i want to sound better the best place to start is on actually picking up what i have and using it more effectively. the gear itself will sound better if what im putting into it (me) is practiced and focused first. i feel like thats a healthy mindset no?

First, in regards to the band photo video you made last week, can the same budget cameras you mentioned be used for other purposes such as product shots, thumbnails, etc, and second, can those same lenses be used for video and if not which ones do you recommend? For additional context, I’d be using a Panasonic GH2 and GH4 and a Sony AC7. I’d love to know what you would recommend!

As a former long haired freak that is now 55 and I have that easy to handle "clipped because shaving my head sucks" look. So to your comment of how will your hair look at 54 a big old FUCK YOU!! LOL Thanks for the info I have researched the speaker I own and loaded a couple cabs and put new tubes in my head that were highly rated, unknown to my musician brain, and very reasonably priced. The results saved me lots on money and I have never been happier with the sound of my JCA 100 designed by Soldano that I paid like $350 for brand new!! LOVE THAT LOW PRICE GEAR!!! Thanks again

I've been thinking a lot about your statement, "a humbucker is a humbucker". There's this guy on YT recording a/b demos of 2 pickups at a time, ie, DiMarzio PAF Pro vs Super Distortion. He seems legitimately to try to keep everything the same: same.guitar, strings, amp, cab, mics, the lot. Do you know of that channel and what are your thpughts on the tests? I can definitely hear differences (yeah I know you never said 2 buckers will.sound identical, not out to contradict you :)) Love your channel, keep challenging our.beliefs. One day we might even listen ❤

A 10" speaker will produce less bass than a 12". Since you roll the lows off on guitars in the mix, anyway, the leaner sound of 10s might work really well.

GLENNN!!! Regarding tone, cabs, speakers, IRs for bass and guitar. Can you review Celestion BN12-300S: Celestion recommend these for BOTH guitar and bass, their support (signed as Dr Decibel) just warn that using them in a semi-open guitar cab will lose some bottom end, though it's totally safe even to play bass through a setup like that. Some big names in boutique cabs market use them (Zilla, Barefaced, Quilter), and some people use them with a poweramp instead of FRFR for modellers. I'm thinking to load my H&K 100W 2x12 combo with these for capturing "moving air" with a mic, and blending that with tracks with IRs using Captor X or similar, both bass and guitar. I wonder how these would work for guitar/bass metal tones for someone who knows what they're doing, and how much using these in different types of cabs (2x12 vs 4x12, open vs closed, etc.) and/or using EQ at the end of the signal chain in effects loop would affect the tone.

About musicians taking photos with the instruments they play: oh boy, I'd have to be holding a guitar, two analogue synths and a laptop, and the vocalist would have to be holding his two mics, a bunch of effects' pedals and his sampler! 🤣 The only "normal" person in our photos would be the other guitar player because that's the only thing he plays. I'm sure we'd look terrific. 😄

Glenn, I recently bought a s/h Carvin labelled speaker (apparently a rebadged Eminence from a Carvin Bel Air) to go with my Carvin V3 amp. One assumes that this is the speaker the amp was designed and tested with so it should sound the best - how important is it to find out & test the same speakers the amp designers were working with?

The 10" Jensens that I have in my Fender are a bit on the bassy side. They would pair up well with a brighter 10" and mix well though.

Have you tried weber speakers ? The cvlt series seems awesome.

Hey glenn, does the magnet of the bads(bass) pickup create a difference? I never really liked the Alnico 5 magnet J pup sound. Where as I really love the sound from a ceramic magnet pup even in a Squier Affinity J bass(2nd cheapest of the lot). I also like the EMG J(ceramic magnet) sound. Is there any difference or is it just placebo?

First of all, I'm not a SD fanboy; I tell people to keep their stock pickups. Most sound about the same. However, maybe Seymour Duncan can do something to make theirs sound different. Even in your own video comparing 10 different guitars, the one with the Duncan sounded noticeably different. I'm just saying it's a hypothesis worth testing further to get to the truth.

One of the best devices I’ve found for testing a mix are the cheap (maybe $10USD?) Onn speakers from Walmart. It’s a single speaker, and will very quickly let you know what the problems with your mix are.

When I first saw glens videos I didn’t know anything about recording or perfecting sounds I actually was using a 75watt line 6 spider (currently ashes sprinkled over my lawn) but glens videos are practically college courses in this world and learning to record and mix tracks has become such a rabbit hole I can’t learn enough

I understood the bads player, as a bads player myself, I think what he was TRYING to insinuate was that there seems to be a larger range in bass pickups than guitar pickups when swapping out. Of course, you're not running a bass through a high-gain distortion so yeah, you'll hear more differences, sure. With my guitars, I experimented a lot with pickups, wasted a lot of money, ended up settling on an SD JB because of channels like this. Should have just gone with the classic that WORKS. As for bass, I get a lot more pickier... There's a lot of different pickups I love.

Harley Benton and S by Solar are the best guitar-to-money value guitars out of the box in 2024 with even aftermarket swaps keeping them cheaper than "mainstream" popular brands and I will fight anybody disagreeing. Swapping for different visuals? Sure, but swapping under the pretense of "better" sound is just brainless.

About the ToneX suggestion in the channel some time ago. Few times already I played live with the ToneX plugged straight into the PA, while the other guitar player was using a mic'd tube amp. People came to me after the show saying "dude amazing tone". And it was cheap as fuck!!! Fuck you, Glenn :)

I put the guts from a Peavey 158 into a Peavey hypervent bass cabinet, and it sounds better with the bigger speaker. Any idea what's going on ?? Then I tried straight into the PA from my pedal, and jeepers... I want an amp that sounds like that.

Speaking of shit cameras, you really need to check your settings on that stupid Pocket 3 man, so shaky and distracting. Take it from our fellow Canadian Kasey and just use a ZV-E1 or even get an action 4 for ultimate out of focus shots but amazing stabilization. That gimbal on the Pocket 3 needs a leash to stay under control

I own 2 solar 7 string top of the line V guitars..and a 7 string strandberg...the solar was $1400 and the strandberg 2k..the solar guitars are very metal guitars something that I like..the strandberg is built slightly better but not really a metal guitar.. the solar have a few minor issues but for 1400 I rather play a solar than a comparable esp or Jackson that's significantly more expensive

+1 for the 10" speakers. They have the punch and the volume and they don't shit all over the place like 12" speakers do (read: they don't occupy the bass guitar's territory). A 4x10 closed back cab is my go-to for rock and metal, 2x10 open back works for everything else. Mind you, if you can hook up 2 cabs, try 2x10 and 1x15. 10s will breakup earlier that a 15 so you'll get midrange growl and clean-ish low end. Fun thing to do! :) Good luck! Cheers!

Hi Glenn. What do you think of Sennheiser HD 280 Pro? I think they are good for tracking (especially for drums). And I use them to get the mix plus vox leveled then use my monitors (1st Gen Lp6 and a sub). Just curious of your thoughts.

Glenn is right! Get some camera gear! It's a great investment! If you can't afford the latest and greatest, buy used! I personally use Nikon mirrorless but, the old DSLRs with the best video functions and quiet lenses are Canon. The old GOAT Canon 5D MKII with a 50mm STM f/1.8 is all you need to get started. You can buy even older and cheaper manual lenses but they'll take time to learn. A great site to buy used is KEH. I get most of my used gear from them. I even bought several film cameras from them. Most of which were less than $20 because the battery compartment had some oxidation which I was able to clean off and worked perfectly fine. I'm looking at a Canon 5D MKII right now on there for $279 and a 50mm f/1.8 STM for $83. Seriously, it aint that bad. Get all of your bandmates to pitch in. You won't regret it. For video, use a shutter speed of 1/48 and 24fps and auto ISO. If your camera doesn't support 1/48 shutter, use 1/50 and you'll get film quality or SMG quality video. Just watch some instructional vids. You'll get it.

Interesting, I've always found 10" speakers to be...for lack of a better way to describe it...boxy, if that makes sense. THEN AGAIN, The last one I used was in my little Vox AC4 combo, which sounded MUUUUUUCH better through my old 70's Marshall 412 with black backs in it (the stock 10" is absolute shit) Could have been how small the cabinet was, or that it was open back too tho, who knows? I don't have ways to test these things!

This channel is why I got a couple of Joyo lunchbox amps (a VIVO and a BadASS) rather than shelling out thousands for their name brand competitors. They both sound great. I'll worry about "buying American" (I'm from the US) when half the nation stops hating me for things beyond my control and when the stuff made here isn't priced outrageously just to inflate a (probably) union-busting CEO's pocketbook.

Hey sir, I do have a question. For a normal tube or even solid state amp, what kind of speakers would be great for a little more BASS? I have an EVN 5150 El 34 and I also have a Boss Kitana Artist 100w. I actually like both amps but was thinking of getting a 2X12 cab to use instead of the stock 1 speaker in both amps. I play mostly 80's music cause im old lol.
