Thanks. They're helpful tips. Right arm tension has plagued me for years. A relaxed face for some reason really helps me relax throughout my body. Keeping the breath natural, especially in difficult passages, has a massive effect as well. That being said, sometimes it's just a bloody mystery and the tension still comes. Very frustrating
I've been needing to play the guitar for 4 hours straight each day the past few days for a musical my school is putting on, and I've notticed how much my shoulders have been hurting. This really helped a lot but I think I've let it get to the point where I need physio/acupuncture to ease it up.
I play electric guitar but primarily in classical position, My left shoulder blade has been hurting a lot lately whenever I play, I used a few of the techniques and so far I feel a little improvement, hopefully It will get better soon because this is only just recent
This may sound crazy but I just started playing classical guitar again and ever since the day I started up my 2nd toe on my left foot has this tingling/stabbing pain off and on. I was thinking it was something like pre diabetes or neuropathy of some sort. Man I really don't want to stop playing guitar again I just got this Sor book and its really bumming me out
Thanks, this hit the nail on the head, I think. My neck was doing great all day, but then I played a little without a strap -- while standing up and sort of hunching over the guitar to hold it / crunch it into into my body so it wouldn't fall -- while playing along to a song on the radio. Now, the pain is back. And I had always noticed when I put the strap on, it hurt my neck. ... I think maybe it's time to switch to piano! Which I always wanted to get into anyway. Sadly, though, I love guitar! Maybe someday someone will invent an ergonomic guitar, if it's possible. Thanks for the tips! Will try to check out Alexander Technique, but probably just need to chill on guitar for a while.
Excellent video on an important topic. Just to add my experience to confirm your suggestions: I have been using a Murata support for a very long time (because I am rather tall and started having problems with a footstool). Over time, I started to develop a pain on the right side of my back. Now I have begun to use a different support, a Gitano. And the back pain is gone! It seems that the slightly different playing position that the Gitano allows (steeper neck and overall lower position of the body of the guitar) removed the overall tension you are talking about in your video. Therefore, if it doesn't feel right, try different supports and different settings of a given support. It may well be that this solves your problem.
I suffered pains while using a standard footstool, I have noticed that a good guitar support will make it... its all about ergonomics! A few relaxing exercises, yoga is going to help.
I’ve played for years but all of the sudden my left shoulder hurts like a Mf, and it doesn’t matter how long I play. 5 minutes standing up and it hurts what do I do.
@Idea Headed same here i got burning pain in my shoulder and neck..i practice 3 hours daily for 1 year every day..i practice only on electric..but learning triads all over the neck caged etc..last 2 month on acustic..it realy hurts left arm like i was hit by basebal bat on the shoulder..any help..thanks..
Can you please tell me the right position of that sagework. I have One buy didn't find any stable and confortabile position. I like to keep the Guitar a bit vertical like you do, so it's more tasty ti sound specially when sliding to the medium/High part of the neck. Anyway I feel fatigue and pain when playing lower frets (1/4) and I feel that kind of pain when your hand Is higher than your Heart and you are putting pressure for a long time.
Hey, Zak here. You can read through some of Allen's articles about pain here classicalguitarshed.com/guitar-finger-pain-sore-wrist/ Also, I would add that you should not be putting any pressure whatsoever on your fret hand thumb. It should be there tension free!
Hey, Zak here. It is called "Capricho Arabe" by Francisco Tarrega. You can find our full course on it here www.classicalguitarshed.com/courses/francisco-tarrega-capricho-arabe/
@@ClassicalGuitarShed oh, I was playing capricho arabe but then I started having back pain, so I searched for a video that could help me ease the pain, cause I wish I could play for hours without any pain. But curiously the video I chose to watch had the music I was playing haha.
Not pins and needles but I get shoulder pain that goes into my neck and back. I'm ready to give up, I'm not sure anything will help as I'm 60 now and only 5 foot tall, so guitar feels even more cumbersome for me.
@@slljarvis have you found a solution? I'm 5 feet tall and while I'm only 15 I have the most awful shoulder and neck pain and I'd do anything to figure out how to not feel this way. I love guitar.
