Speed is easy to get. Metronome and boring work on accuracy.

Master Stine, I just found out that I couldn't speed more because my arms were holding the weight of the guitar, instead of trusting the strap or my leg. Just sharing with you guys. Your channel is the best online class I have seen. Thanks a lot!

Nobody ever mentions this but 3 notes per string alternating picking between down-up-down and up-down-up. If you start with a down stroke on the 6th string and do this correctly, you end on the first string with an up stroke. I had this problem years ago crossing strings with the same stroke I just completed. Very important to continue the pattern. If you haven't mentioned this Steve, you know the deal.

If you take the speed down from Mach 5 to about Mach 2 I might be able to see your fingers move a little better......But seriously, great lesson, Steve.

I apologize if this gets mentioned later in the video, as I haven't watched it all because I'm in a hurry! But I'm curious are you doing economy picking in these 3 note patterns? Or are you alternate picking? Thanks.
@zaccyo
@zaccyo 4 года назад
He alternate picks it. Economy is how I do it. That way i don't have to learn alternate picking in both directions. I think economy is faster too.

Thanks Steve, slightly confused with your dissection of the finger positions on the single string run up. Do you say "spread" to give us the choice between 1,2,4 or 1,3,4 when in other places you specifically say 1,2, 4 or 1,3,4? Does that make sense or should I stick to playing bingo?

It's one of the scales I use really often. But I don't agree with you when you're saying you can not use your little finger if you want to. I think it's a bad habit some guitar players used to have because it distorts your fingers the wrong way, especially when you play scales between the first and the 7th fret.

Yes, I totally agree, but I can't force anyone to do anything that they don't feel is comfortable for them, I can only encourage and demonstrate what I do. I have taught thousands of students, and for me, the most important thing is to encourage their journey, their way, and deal with the crossroads as they come up. Thanks so much for the reply, Paul!

It's more important to like the sounds rather than focusing on speed. If technical work is needed, play piano etudes and a left handed guitar. Look at MacAlpine, this guy plays piano also. If you focus on why you are playing what notes, speed comes naturally after better accuracy. This video is like teaching how to type. Guitar is not secretarial skills.
