Elliot Easton has always been one of my faves. In that thumbnail pic of the band, Elliot looks like "the pissed off middle child in a family photo".

Hi. Elliot Easton is one of my favorite players as well. His solos always sound really organic and melodic. Thanks for your comment. Any favorite solos? Let me know and maybe we can do a lesson.

I find the Bb to C bend at 5:52 to be the the most challenging part of this great solo. You did it (and the whole solo) perfectly. Can you share what string gauge you're using?

Hey thanks for commenting. 0.09 string gauge is what I use for electric. Glad you enjoyed the lesson!

Great tutorial! I know it's probably a lot to ask. Any chance you could break down in detail why each note works over each chord theory wise and position wise? Trying to understand some of the in-depth theory behind solos. Maybe the solo to Pink Floyd's Mother? Thanks

Hey thanks for your comment. Wow, that's quite a task. We'd have to analyze each note in reference to each chord. It also depends on the context because sometimes a chord tone (note of the chord) might work better but also an extension of the chord can add a really beautiful color. Sometimes a note outside of the chord even if we think of it as a "wrong" note if it's played with great time feel will sound correct. For me a great solo should tell a story. It should be played with great time feel and it should be coherent. Each phrase should be a consequence of what's played before so that the solo has direction. There should also be a good balance between melodic playing and virtuosity. I think these should be the concepts to keep in mind when improvising. Hope this answers your question.

@@GuitarSongsChannel sure, thank you for replying. I can understand what you’re saying. Just looking for why certain things work and certain things don’t - from a purely theoretical standpoint. I appreciate your reply.

My pleasure! As I said chord tones always work very well. For example landing your phrase on the 3rd of the chord will sound awesome. It will tell you exactly what the chord quality is...major or minor. The root is ok but playing the root always will sound a bit lame and predictable. A great thing you can do is listen to horn players. Since they only play single note lines they have to define the harmony as best as possible. I would say...use arpeggios (chord tones) to define the harmony and scales if you want to use extensions or color tones. 🙂 This is again from a very theoretical stand point. Rhythm is KING! Build your inner rhythm and tempo and everything will sound convincing.

@@GuitarSongsChannel Ok, that gives me a great start and something from which to build. Thank you very much!
