Ive been lucky enough to see the Mule a few times and Warren is probably my favourite guitarist I've ever heard/seen live ( I'm 62 and have seen/listened to music all my life) and his tone is so good that it nearly brings tears to your eyes at times listening to him ! How Gov't Mule isn't more widely know still surprises me but then I guess, they're a band that plays music for music's sake, not commercial success ??
Pardon my French, but I fucking LOVE this band and this song! Thanks, Todd! And thanks, Michael, for explaining to a complete non-musician why this is so great. I just know it makes me groove. ❤
Good points of view, 🧐 thanks I would have never known those were Prince in beginning and middle. How turned to look at band to improvise . Always learning something from Good guitarist and musicians. Thanks for sharing.😊
Thanks Michael, I was lucky to see Gov't Mule live when Woody was still alive. The band had an energy that was incendiary, Woody played the mandolin on a couple tunes, a wonderful musician. This line up is very nice to hear, bad ass. Not in a band now, but I've been playing through a Sovtek Mig 100 head with the 4x12 slant cab for 20 years. My last band for ten years was 3pc power rock/blues/fusion-confusion-original music. I love the interplay of the amp and my guitar. Thanks again.
And that triad sweep picked like a T-Rex at the end is the only way to bring it. Playing with Chuck Leavell and Bramblett on the sax is where the growth comes. Warren can make you cry!
The one complaint I have about modern Blues and jam bands in general is the lack of a song as a vehicle for the music. Lyrics that go somewhere and also musically a song that takes a journey. To me Gov't Mule has always had great songs that stand on their own. Then Warren would expand and jam on those.
Another master vid, Mike. I can tell you one killer thing Warren does is overbend and release. I could suggest what playing above the generic 12 note western music that Indian music western music doesn't is semitones. You can't create Aretha Franklin by hitting just notes. Sorry, just head the end of you mention microtones. That was what I trying to say. You call microtones what I call semitones. You dissect it further. I can tell you though, Warren overbend to make his phrase s lyrical as hell. You did a killer class 101 on a song I play all the time.
I've seen Warren many times, with the ABB. He is an absolute monster with a guitar. Standing next to the incredible Derek Trucks, IMO makes them the best duo ever. Nice to see both of them getting the props they deserve. Great video!!
Amazing player. Saw him solo in a 200 seat venue last year. Blew me away. But... let's talk about that tone for a minute. I absolutely can't get enough of his les paul tone, and this video is a perfect example of it. Combined with his impeccable phrasing, it's just sublime.
You absolutely nailed it on his similarities to playing like a vocalist. It's what made me a fan 15 or so years ago and why he's still one of my all time favorite players. I'll always thumbs up a Warren Haynes reaction vid! 🤘
There's an interview with Jorgen Carlsson somewhere where he talks about the audition they threw at him. First, they handed him a list of a couple of HUNDRED songs to learn- then spot checked him for a couple of hours. After that, they just jammed, and the band threw every change up, switcheroo, and new direction they could think of at him, just to see what he'd do. He's had the gig for quite some time, now- so apparently, he did what they'd hoped, lol. He had some BIG shoes to fill. Allen Woody was a monster bass player! His first two gigs with them were a "normal" Mule show, then a special Halloween show of all Floyd covers- that ended up becoming their Dark Side of the Mule CD. Jorgen acquitted himself very well that night. (And Danny Louis absolutely channeled Richard Wright...)
Saw Warren so many times growing up, you should check out some of the Phil Lesh and Friends shows from 2001 with Warren and Jimmy Herring if you haven't already.
I was lucky enough to see Gov't Mule with Warren Allen and Matt. I once waited in the rain for them to come back out after a rain delay during a free concert and they eventually did and then played for an hour and a half to the 25 people who stayed. I got Pneumonia but I don't regret it for a second.
Love the way you point out different tunes in songs Michael. I knew nothing about guitars or music. . .just if I loved a tune or not. You explain why the same song played by someone else can really make a difference in the song. Thank you.
Love the song, Warren is amazing. From Almond Brothers to Gov’t Mule… carrying that tube amp drive. But Michael… your descriptions of these awesome songs to such beautiful detail is almost like hearing colors! I’ve sadly kinda had to not have the guitar in my hands for months since going back to working at the hospital all the time, not even using the little spare time wisely enough to catch your awesomely descriptive videos - until tonight with Warren … and I’ve just been rekindled in the ear and inspired as hell to pick er back up! What I’ve been missing!! Thank you brother man! You rock!
Warren is such a wonderful player. Was lucky enough to see the original lineup about 30 times, and they were nothing less than stellar each time. Warren’s solo on Painted Silver Light is probably my favorite solo ever from a lifetime of listening to as much music as humanly possible. Great content as always.
The prince song that Warren plays is great ONLY bc how Warren interprets and redistributes his version. Other than that it's.....yawn......prince. But thank you Mr Mike for describing why i know that WH is the most talented guitar player living today.
I have loved this song since the very 1st time hearing it. I love how the song talks about being beautifully broken, meanwhile the chord changes and structure of the song are just that. I love how you reference Warren holding back on the first solo and then he just rips your face off with that 2nd!
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BGE4362PsGo.html you should react to this, unfortunately it’s not the same quality as the album live version but still shows off Ben Howard’s unreal talent.
Matt was on an entirely different level during this era. He's definitely slowed down a bit and struggles it seems with joint issues but my god, was he an absolutely key ingredient in what made Mule, Mule.
I'm a huge fan of Warren. His tone is incredible, tasty solos, the type of guitar playing that takes you on a journey. What should never be underestimated about Warren, is his fantastic song writing. So many musicians have been known to play Soldano SLO 100 amps but Warren is the first for me, that sound, It's him. Wether it's with The Allman Brothers or Mule. You know with the first note. That's what makes Warren Haynes one of the all time best IMO. Great analysis, I couldn't of said it any better myself.
Great tune. Have seen Mule play it, Warren play it solo, and him play it with Phil and some other places. The version he created with Mule like this one is truly unique. George just having the time of his life bouncing and playing such a dark tune is great too. George Matters.
Could you PLEASE do Clint Black’s “Live & Learn”? There’s a version on YT from when he was young, or a more recent version where he’s in studio & he discusses his artistic process a bit.
That was awesome how you picked out that detail about " growing up with big tube amps"...and the explaining how the harmonics and the leading third works...how did you get this experience? They dont teach that in "guitar school"...
So glad you did some Mule and Warren! A lot of people get caught up on how fast you can play or how many notes you can hit in a scale, but Warren's playing and song writing tends to provoke much more emotion, or at least it does for me. I know you don't want to flood your channel with the same artists but it would be awesome to get your breakdown of another blues driven tune by Mule. Happy New Year and keep on making great content! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8NwimaKrgmo.html
Hey Michael! One of your Guitar gate subscribers here. I have a request for a future reaction video of the instrumental band Covet, fronted by Yvette Young. I think she has a guitar playing style that is fresh and new. Check her out. Thanks!
I wanted to pass on a thank you. Can't afford to join, but I am thankful for the ones you put up. I have played and toured a good bit of my life, bass and guitar, depending on the band and who needed which. All that time, I just played on what I thought was right, concentrating on taste, dynamics and what I felt was right to play. Then I finally started to teach myself theory, which has been a bitch. I saw I knew what was what ear-wise, but realized I could do so much more knowing the head stuff as well as the heart. That's why I am appreciating your work on these videos. It has been a real boost in my knowledge base, and has been hard to find, especially how, in my opinion, you do a great job of spreading your critiques around stylistically. So...I guess the question is, want to move to Texas and start a band?!? We can get famous....you know, and meet girls.
I shattered my shoulder and now I can’t even play but in the hospital I listened to Warren and he is just who I miss the discipline of my own playing. 40 years and now my fretting hand goes to sleep because I can’t find a neck that doesn’t choke my thumb.
Great video. I love your channel. Warren Haynes is truly a class act. Great song writer and one bad ass guitar player. Meet and seen them several times very nice guy as well. God bless Govt Mule and rock n roll...
