From Matt's blog at line6.com/blog
Line 6's Propellerhead Product Specialist Matt Piper demonstrates how to process electric guitar with a Malström Graintable Synthesizer, using Propellerhead Reason.
Please note that Reason 6 or above is required to record audio and to have the included Line 6 Guitar Amp device.
The software used in this video was Record Reason Duo by Propellerhead. That product has since been replaced by Reason 6.5. Reason 6.5 has everything you see in the video plus powerful new features including new effects devices, thousands of new presets, sounds, and loops, and support for 3rd-party Rack Extensions.
Here is a link to the entire playlist of Propellerhead videos by Matt Piper at line6movies: • Propellerhead Reason +...

@DanieldelAngel Sorry for the delayed response. The Line 6 amp device is included with Propellerhead Record. If you own a registered copy of Reason 5, you could purchase Record for Reason Owners to gain this functionality.
@line6movies
@line6movies 13 лет назад
@ernst4321 Yes, this will work for Reason 5. If you don't have Record, then you won't have the Line 6 amp device shown in the video, but now that Reason 5 has audio inputs for sampling, you can play live instruments through the Reason synth filters and effects. However, you would still need Record 1.5 to record the audio parts into the sequencer.

Chris, I just recently made the switch from live HW synths (nord, juno etc) to an Akai MPK88 and A dedicated reason/record laptop. Its been the best decision i've made in a while and i've been using record to do real time vocoding, and guitar etc... to get to the point i've been trying to surprise the guys at rehearsal using my guitar as a synth and thanks to this clear tutorial and simple instruction I can - rock on and your music kicks butt, too!
@line6movies
@line6movies 14 лет назад
@aarunt1 You do not need a POD. Any audio interface that will allow you to get a guitar signal into an audio recording program will work. All the effects are happening within Record (plus Reason). The Line 6 Guitar Amp device you see in the video is included with the Record software.
@line6movies
@line6movies 14 лет назад
@sandroslb Absolutely. As long as your bring your laptop and an audio interface with an instrument input to the gig, you can do exactly what's in the video.
@line6movies
@line6movies 14 лет назад
@DogSeal0 No, Record is necessary to provide audio input for any of the Reason devices. (Reason 5 will provide sampling inputs for NN-XT, NN-19, Redrum, and Kong, but no live audio input for the synths like Malström and Thor. For that you will still need Record.)

Hey-- thanks for your comment. It helped motivate me to make a guitar-through-Thor patch, and I've just posted it on my Line 6 blog that goes with this video. The blog post is called "Propellerhead Record + Reason: Playing Guitar Through the Reason Synths." You can download the "Twin Thors Guitar" Combinator patch from that page.

Thank you for your comments. :) Actually, Line 6 has a lot of videos up, and every once in a while we miss a comment or two. As soon as I finally saw your comments yesterday, I approved them. I'd never seen them before or I'd have approved them right away, because I enjoy a lively discussion and differing viewpoints!

Good idea! I created a ready-to-use patch (downloadable from the Line 6 blog) based on this tutorial, and assigned Mod Wheel to the filter frequencies (inverse, so turning up the Mod Wheel turns down the filter frequency). That would work great mapped to an expression pedal.

@MaartenGibson You do not need an expensive sound card, but you do need one with an instrument input that is designed for music recording. You might want to check out the Line 6 POD Studio™ GX. It is an inexpensive but high-quality guitar recording interface that connects via USB. To actually record your guitar as shown in the video, you will need Propellerhead Record software, in addition to Reason. If you have a full registered copy of Reason, check out "Record for Reason Owners."
@line6movies
@line6movies 13 лет назад
@chrisw142 I connected it to my Line 6 audio interface (Line 6 UX 1 was used for this video), although any professional audio interface with an instrument input could be used. The audio interface connects to the computer via USB. For more info, please search for my video called: How to Record a Song - Part 1: Set Up

If you have Reason 6, it's included. It's not in any Reason release before 6 but it wouldn't matter here anyway as you can't capture live audio before Reason 6. If you want to add the Line6 amp, it's under effects, so that's Create -> Effects -> Line 6 Guitar Amp. I swear, Reason 6 is awesome. A few things I think it needs tweaking but yeah, it rocks. As a guitar player, I'm wondering if I even need my HD 500 anymore... Yeah, yeah I do.

I'm really happy that I just have to pick up my guitar to make some music ;-) A friend of mine uses Reason, he can't play an instrument. But he created many music tracks which sound great.

If you have Propellerhead Record software, the Line 6 amp is built-in. You'll find it in the Devices list in the Tool Window, and also in the Create Menu.

@illDiology 1. Thanks! :) 2. Reason has always been MIDI-only, with no audio input, since version 1 was released in 2000. It has consistently been one of the most stable and cpu efficient music software applications ever made. Last year, Record was released: an extremely easy-to-use recording platform that integrates seamlessly with Reason. "Record for Reason Owners" is a great deal, because for not much more money than a Reason upgrade, Reason owners get upgraded to Reason 5 & Record 1.5.
@line6movies
@line6movies 12 лет назад
Thanks for sharing your opinion. :) To your point, I would mention that when Propellerhead released Reason 6, they allowed people who owned both Reason and Record to purchase Reason 6 upgrades for whatever price they wanted (as low as $1) for a limited time, as part of their "Pay What You Want" promotion. Even though that promotion is over, an upgrade to Reason 6 from any full previous version of Reason or Record (even Reason 1, released in 2000) is only $169. :)

Thanks for your comment! To answer your question: Line 6 POD Studio UX1 is the audio interface I used for the guitar.
@line6movies
@line6movies 12 лет назад
:) I used a USB audio interface specifically designed for recording music with computers. For this video, I used a Line 6 POD Studio UX1, which has a guitar input and a mic input (in addition to 2 line-level inputs). It connects to the computer with a USB cable. You select it as the audio input/output source in Reason's preferences. You need an interface with a dedicated guitar input. Using adaptor cables to plug a guitar into your computer's mic input usually doesn't sound very good.

Yes you can play the guitar live using the same setup described in the video. However, I recorded the guitar ahead of time, so that I could easily use the mouse for the video. For playing live, you might want to hook up an expression pedal or other MIDI foot controllers so that you can keep both hands on your guitar, or use a looper pedal with your guitar.
@line6movies
@line6movies 14 лет назад
@CentrebreakDnb The Line 6 Guitar Amp device you see in the video is included with the Propellerhead Record software. If you are a registered owner of Reason 4, and also own Record, then when you launch Record, all the Reason devices are already inside (along with the new Record devices, like the Line 6 amp).
@line6movies
@line6movies 12 лет назад
@Loopcyclemusic Thanks - glad you like the sounds! No, the guitar does not have to be recorded - you can play it live. For the video, I used previously recorded guitar because then I could use my mouse to adjust parameters without having to play guitar at the same time. :-)

I actually wrote a book to teach exactly that: "What's the sound going to sound like if I turn a knob." The book is called "Using Reason's Virtual Instruments," and it's available on Amazon. It was written for Reason 3 (so Thor isn't in it), but if you read that book, you will understand how synths work. The great thing about Reason is that whatever you learn there works for real analog synths, modular synths, etc. Btw, I am mostly self-taught, but I also researched synth manuals & Wikipedia!
@line6movies
@line6movies 11 лет назад
Though you cannot record audio into Reason 5, you can use the built-in Sample input to get audio from your guitar into Mälstrom's filter input. (Look for the Sample input on the back of Reason's Hardware device at the top of the rack.)
@line6movies
@line6movies 12 лет назад
In order to make an audio track in Reason, you need Reason 6 or above. So if you are the registered owner of any previous full version of Reason (all the way back to Reason 1.0), a Reason 6 Upgrade is all you would need. Once you register that, you also immediately qualify for a free download of Reason 6.5 (which adds support for 3rd-party Rack Extensions). Once you have Reason 6.5, you just have to select "Create Audio Track" from the Create menu, or click CTRL + T (Windows) or CMD + T (Mac).
@line6movies
@line6movies 12 лет назад
@Treflex If you have the latest version of Reason (Reason 6), then yes. However, the mic input on your computer, while it will work, may not sound perfect because it is not optimized for guitar. The sound may be distorted or noisy. Worth a try, though! (I was using a Line 6 audio interface that had a dedicated guitar input.)

i never thought music was this complicated!!!Holy shit
@line6movies
@line6movies 13 лет назад
@yungkook You cannot record audio into Reason's sequencer. To record audio into the sequencer, you need Reason + Record. However, the latest version of Reason (Reason 5) does include sampling capability, so you could record samples (30 seconds max each) of your guitar directly into Reason, and trigger those samples with Kong, NN-XT, NN-19, or Redrum. However, if you don't have Record, you won't have the Line 6 amp device shown in the video.
@line6movies
@line6movies 14 лет назад
@Chris08TT Ha ha! Reason and Record are actually very easy to use, but sometimes (ok, often) I like to go into deeply nerdy territory and "tinker under the hood." It doesn't have to be nearly as complicated as I make it seem! :)
@jonQuest82

@ListenToOurTorture a caveat --Reason is easier to pick up if you've come from a hardware environment where you've used racks full of synths, effects etc. If you learned on software i.e. FL studio, which is most beginners' starting point, there will be slower learning curve. Reason is very powerful, but I prefer Ableton Live for composing, all of my tools are in the margin waiting for a drag and drop (like FL)--no series of menus for each device. It's easy to lose time browsing in Reason.

When this video was made, Reason 6 had not been released, so I was using Record Reason Duo (now discontinued). Reason 6 would look exactly the same and give you 100% of the functionality shown in these videos, plus 3 new effects devices, thousands of new sounds & loops, and support for 3rd party Rack Extensions (available once you download the free Reason 6.5 update).

Yes. (You wouldn't have the Line 6 guitar amp modeling, but as long as you like your sampled guitar sound anyway, then that's no problem.)

I'm afraid it won't work with Subtractor, because Subtractor doesn't have an audio input. It will work with Thor (if you also have Record), but Thor's user interface for handling signal routing is much different than Malstrom's. If you want to start a very lively discussion and get lots of great info about how to do this with Thor, I suggest asking that question on the User Forum on the Propellerhead website. I'm likely to join in that discussion too!

@ListenToOurTorture Reason is unique in the way it simulates a hardware rack full of synths, drum machines, loop players, and effects that you can connect the same way you would connect real hardware equipment in a studio. Most people find Reason to be easy to use, and are able to start making music quickly. It comes with a ton of sounds, and is known for being fun and inspiring to use, actually helping you make more music. It's great for designing your own sounds, too.
@line6movies
@line6movies 14 лет назад
May I humbly suggest a book called "Reason 4 Ignite." :) If you go through all the exercises in that book from beginning to end, you will totally know how to use all the synths in Reason. If you were talking about actual hardware synths, I would say that if you really learn all the ins and outs of synthesis in Reason, you will be able to understand any hardware analog synth-- even put together your own modular synth setup.

Reason and Record work great via ReWire with ProTools, Logic, Ableton Live, Cubase, and any DAW with ReWire support. Furthermore, Record's Bounce Mixer Channels feature easily and quickly exports your stems for import into another DAW. (Neither of our comments will be axed.) ;-)

I have Balance which obviously, that's a preferred way to hook it up. I also have a POD HD500 which gives me ASIO from a USB cable, I plug my guitar into the POD then USB it in and select the ASIO driver in Reason 6 and voila! Of course any compatible device that will take a 1/4in input to USB via an ASIO driver should suffice. I'd check the list of compatible devices first. I would'nt recommend converting a quarter in cable to an 1/8 in cable and plugging into the mic port. Gross! :)

Hi, in case you are still looking on how to use a guitar as a midi controller, there is a software solution called Midi Guitar 2 by Jam Origin. Just wanted to say two things: 1. This is a great tutorial and the guitar sounds fantastic through those Malmstrom filters 2. Am I completely missing something, or is Propellerheads being dicks making stuff like this only possible if you buy Record? Is there some technical reason that Reason cannot be run in a VST mode or something? Doing stuff like this should not require buying a completely new product - it should just act as a well-behaved vst with full input-output.
