They were so loud and greasy on this debut!! This is pure, classic, hard-assed major league rock n roll. This album deserves way more attention. Many Rush fans skip it because Neil hadn't joined yet and the songs and lyrics were simple, but DAMN!! dudes, this is balls to the wall!!

One thing about Alex Lifeson is he didn't have a "signature" sound. He is a master at coming up with different sounds for each song. Truly one of the greatest of all time IMO.

It has to be noted here that both Alex and Geddy were 20 at this point. The level of musicianship they had at that point is evident and makes one realize why they became so much more a cohesive unit after Neil joined. But the ages of both Alex and Geddy are just stunning with that amount of perfection. And I'll give props to John Rutsey. Thank you for stepping aside and allowing us that wonder that was Neil. RIP Professor. RIP John Rutsey.

Rush's first album rocked SO HARD!! If you like that wall of Marshalls and thick slabs of loud crunch ripping your face off, you are in for a whole album of bangers. Alex was a golden haired rock god back then, Geddy Lee was a cool witch-like banshee and John Rutsey was a true rock drummer and a very interesting guy. If not with Rush, I think he should have continued with a successful music career and should have been appreciated more. He wasn't healthy enough for the road and he partied pretty hard, so he left the band. But he also knew that Geddy and Alex wanted to explore progressive rock and he was much more of a rock n roll purist.

Yeah, Alex really rips on those early albums, mostly basic blues scales back then, but still awesome. And Geddy singing with a rock 'n roll swagger on the debut album, love it.

On the first album, Alex was just serving up riff after riff and hadn't gotten into his open chording and textural stuff that came out on subsequent albums. They were pretty young and just happy to be recording and playing to an audience and the carefree playing shows through. Lyrically thing s would become much more meaningful and thought-provoking from Neil's perspective but for this first album, they just kept everything simple and free-flowing.

Oh Yeah, loved the excitement. This album rocks and I believe they were around 19yrs to 20 yrs old when they released this album. Let's just say they were better then most at that age. Alex's early playing was mostly bluesy and agree Rutsey ain't no slouch on the drums. Cheers solid reaction.

Your reaction popped up on my RU-vid feed, however before I watched it all, I heard you say you were going to react to every Rush song! Well, I went back and found your "Finding My Way" reaction first. May I make a suggestion? Any Rush song you've heard before, find an early live recording to listen to instead? You could listen to how they've evolved. I remember getting this album in 1975 after owning "Fly By Night." John Rutsey was a decent drummer. He wasn't replaced because of his lack of drumming ability. I would also strongly encourage you to watch the Rush documentary, "Beyond the Lighted Stage" (2010). It's only about 99 minutes long and it will provide some needed insight into Rush history. These 2 songs, "Need Some Love" and "Take a Friend" truly showcase how much of a power trio Rush at the start. Alex's playing on his Gibson ES-335 is raw and phenomenal for a 21 year old guitarist! Geddy was also 21. Because of your idea to react to every song is why I subscribed to your channel. You will hear how Rush changed with Neil Peart with the second album. I can't wait to see each video of yours! ✌✌✌

They were recording this album at nights after gigging to pay for the studio time, apparently John Rutsey had written the lyrics but at the last minute destroyed them so Geddy had to come up with all the lyrics on the fly, the mix was a mess which is where Terry Brown first came in and started his hugely successful period with the band.

The stories are true, when they got first radio play in Cleveland, the station was swamped with calls asking when the new Led Zepplin album was being released. Today that doesn't sound like such a big deal, but think what a compliment that was for a brand new band. If you haven't seen it you need to watch The Rise of Kings documentary.

RUSH (Debut album) - recorded in 7 days (actually 7 nights) in Toronto. Of course there is no Neil Peart on this album, it's original drummer John Rutsey and you can tell. He's certainly capable but... well.. I'll leave it there. This album perfectly embodies why RUSH was nicknamed "Canadian Zeppelin" or "Baby Zep" by many music industry insiders in 1974. They would quickly be proven wrong though once Peart joined the band and took over the lyric writing duties. it's a raw album. And thats not a bad thing in this case. But they were certainly a different band on this record. The most interesting part of this album for me is we hear early Geddy playing the bass... even in 1974 he was developing his signature lead bass technique. Keep up the reactions!

@Bass17yl

Y’know that friend you had in high school who you didn’t really like that much? I mean, they were all right, but you didn’t have a lot in common with them, and you had all the same classes, so they were kinda your de facto best friend? You forget about them for years after graduation, then you see them one day and this overwhelming nostalgia takes over, and they’re your best friend again? That’s the debut album for a lot of fans, I think. We almost dismiss it - probably because of its Peartlessness - and never really listen to it. But then you hear a song or two, and you realize the magic really was already there, just waiting for The Professor. Looking forward to the rest of this. I think this is the deepest dive any of the reactors have taken!

I totally agree with you the first song is superior to the second however this era this particular album I think has a real heavy led Zeppelin influence and although the lyrics are a bit pedestrian compared to their lyrics and future albums when Neil was writing they're still not bad. something to listen to in the future if you have the chance is getting Lee solo album my favorite headache.

Chances are you will never read this since the reaction was a long time ago. I'm 59 years old and I had this album Rush,Rush since I was around 11. I'm not a musician of any kind. That being said, your comments about early years of Rush, are kind of weird considering it was the early to mid 70s. The music from the 70s was actual sound not peddles and whammy bars and electronic interference as I call it. Those musicians had actual talent or didn't make it. So be kind please rewind.😅 lol

2/3 of Rush isn't Rush. They became Rush when Peart joined. The drumming on this is sloppy and the song writing is fucking awful. I love everything else they did (minus the clipped vapor trails) after but the debut is mostly throw-away.
