Even my children knew all the words to her songs as we drove everywhere listening to them on cassette tape with them singing all the words from their booster seats. She's been a part of my life since the late 80's; her music bringing me so much enjoyment and comfort. This is the first time I've ever cried with the loss of a celebrity. Catch a blackbird's wing...
She had that profound magic that any shooting star would envy - great performance, incredible emotive songwriting and my god she was adorable. Here’s my finest Irish whiskey to you and your legacy Nanci.
I wonder how much sensitivity and artistic genius need to write a similar song. This song has a moving, and poetic lyric, and puts the chills and has wonderful music. And Nanci's smile is of an incomparable sweetness. Love Nanci.
Ya know, I came late to the Nanci Griffith understanding,if you will, and she really is honestly one of the best writers/singers and musicians I've ever heard, but, her showmanship, stage presence, just fantastic,.. what a fantastic woman, a fantastic human being.
And when she dies she says she'll catch some blackbird's wing And she will fly away to heaven Come some sweet blue bonnet spring. RIP Nanci Griffith and thank you for the music 🙏🙏
I've been privileged to hear Portland, Oregon bassist/vocalist Denny Bixby (0:54) tell wonderful stories of working with Nanci Griffith, Gail Davies, Rodney Crowell and many more artists during his time in Nashville. Here he's singing the part performed by Mac McAnally on Nanci's 1988 album, "Little Love Affairs." Denny was the bassist on her next album, "One Fair Summer Evening," recorded live at the Anderson Fair venue in Houston, Texas.
Yes, most people don't know much about Denny, or Mac for that matter. Now he may be taking the Coral Reefers and going forth with them. When I lived in Nashville he was a regular fixture at venues like the Exit/In, at the same time Buffet was there.
I've watched this video some half a dozen times over the last two days and I just cannot get over her smile, which lights up her entire face as she sings and watches her fellow musicians. This lady was beyond magical!
Beautiful song, covered but never touched by others. Nanci's voice was made for music like this. I love how she gives the harmony line over to the second verse and then ties the two lines together in the third. Soaring.
R.I.P Nanci Griffith ❤️ you were a most wonderful artist always to be remembered through your songs like this gem and with your sweet voice and that special smile you always gave to us!
Still cant hear it without tearing up just a little. A truly beautiful memory. These human bodies just come so poorly equiped for flying, that angels write this for us.
An angel from heaven has returned home her passing is heartbreaking I saw her live a few years ago and her voice was strong and powerful every time I think about that think about that ji get a lump in my throat and I choke back tears RILNanci the pleasure is now gods
Such a talented artist, such a pretty lady. Your passing has really effected me so much. I felt sadness when other artists that I was big fans of like John Prine, both Everly Brothers now passed, but your passing has had such an immense effect that I cannot even describe. Somehow it just doesn't even seem real that you have left this earth. I saw you only once in concert at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in 1993 and feel lucky to have been there although I wish I had had the opportunity to see more concerts. I have been such a big fan of your music since the mid 1980's. RIP Nanci Griffith.
First heard Nanci on Austin City Limits. Loved her voice, but I was a rocker and soon moved on. Just recently started listening again. OMG I missed so many of her years. Captivating, beautiful voice. I shall not stop until I depart this earth. Thank you Nanci.❤️🇺🇸
As my brother, who sent me this, said, "I wish the original poster had identified the venue and the performance date." Probably unknown, is my guess... But, yes, Nanci at the top of her A game!
Sure that here the wonderful Nanci was in an extraordinary period, but she has often been at the Top...probably could be in 1988, or maybe 1989, but I'm not sure
I'm not sure of the date, but I'm pretty sure that's the David Letterman set. While my mind has gone blank on the bassist's name, I recognize him as Paul Schafer's regular bassist.
Had a lot of health issues through the years but she chose to wait one week after her death to let people know what their actual cause was at least her granting her wishes
@@nealbaker7991 Thank you. I will tell you the mundane but true story of how it came about. When I first started watching RU-vid videos and especially reading some of the comments, I found myself frequently saying, "Oh, dear!" So when I myself wanted to make a comment on a YT video, I had to create an account and choose a name. "Oh Dear" seemed appropriate.
Nanci Griffith was a talented singer/songwriter. "Gulf Coast Highway" is one of my favorite songs from Nanci Griffith. She is now singing along with the angels in God's choir.
