I do not think of Urdu or Hindi as a separate language. They are two different registers/versions of Hindustani. This is similar to English spoken in different English speaking parts of the world, which varies in vocabulary, accent etc. Off course the script is different. But today's world of social media, more and more people are opting to write in Roman regardless of whether they think of themselves as Hindi or Urdu speaker.

Rohan Roy I think you have a good idea, however the spoken colloquial daily Hindustani is almost the same, I think that is varies due to literature and people prefer to choose vocabulary due to religious reasons. We, in Punjabi have many words which are of Sanskrit and Hindi but this is mostly restricted to the elders and now they have been almost replaced with Persian and Arabic and same for India the Indians have started to use more Sanskrit in their Hindustani Hindi where as pre-partition their Boli consisted of more Arabic and Persian. I have met people from Delhi who speak Hindi and I understood almost all of it except for a few words but I think the common people will never really struggle understanding each other.

Gulzar as usual has raised certain thought provoking questions. Urdu ofcourse is gaining grounds at one level and loosing its appeal because of its script .Devnagri scripti has kept Urdu alive and will keep on spreading the sweetness of Urdu .Let us enjoy what we have achieved and what we have. Surender Bhutani Why he wants to separate language from script. When the script is there. Why Urdu needs to be written in Devenagri? It is not that there is no one left to write in Urdu script. The fact is simple ...religious bias. Majority of hindu India don't like the arabic/persian script of urdu because of Islam and muslims. But Arabic and Persian are pre-islamic languages.

Surender Bhutani Urdu is losing it's appeal because of its script? What Rubbish....Gulzar is tunn and you must be double tunn. Urdu has its own script....why don't you suckers tell the truth....

Great thoughts. However, how many would accept that Urdu Shayeri, when scripted in Devnagiri would be accredited to Urdu. Many still continue saying Hindi Shayeri Suniye where they quote Dr. Bashir Badr. How many would pronounced Zindagi, where dot is put under J and would not pronounce it as Jindagi Dr. Jaleel is pronounced as Dr. Zaleel, by over excitement and so on. Distortion is on going in every field of fine arts and history and may be after xx number of years, they would claim Meer, Ghalib and Firaq were poets of Hindi. Ideal example is Sindhi in India, which after partition adopted Devnagri script and now struggling to revert to Arabic script. I agree with Gulzar Sb on making script popular in the form of fine calligraphy. At Jushan E Rekhta ( 14 - 15 Mar) in Delhi, they had a work station with two calligraphers writing names in Urdu for huge FANS. Everybody proudly possesses his / her names calligraphed in Urdu.

Language is not the same thing as script. The best script to codify all Indo-Aryan languages, given their phonetic inventories, is Devanagari. /zal/ and /dal/ too have just the difference of a tiny nukta. So if that works in Nastaliq, why is Devanagari any different? Urdu regularly bastardises many Arabic words - words like zulm, hadees, zuhr, mareez etc are all pronounced wrong in Urdu. The correct pronunciations are dhulm, haedith, dhohr, maeridh respectively. Should we ban Urdu speech then, because it messes up borrowed Arabic words? Urdu in India absolutely should be written in its native script - which is Devanagari. Tough shit to people who don't like it :)

SHAIKH RAHMATULLAH Never should community to come under any pressure or be influenced by such Nadan Dost who suggest Devenagri script for Urdu. Why? should we accept that...Javed Akhtar is another Nadan Dost. I don't like him. He is no friend to Urdu but to his profession and to his socio political status. A person who is compromising on some fundamental cultural and moral values can be compromising on any thing. So, I don't trust him to be a Muhafiz e Urdu.

I like Gulzar personally, and I am a fan of his poetry but I don't agree with him on certain comments and suggestions he made while answering the questions. Why Urdu should be written in Devnagri to reach its speakers. Why? I don't understand his logic. He called the Urdu community a bias because it din't accept the idea of writing and presenting Urdu in Devnagri. It is like asking an english speaking community to write english in Sanskrit. or Sanskrit in Urdu. I think he is foolishly playing bias. Why should urdu be written in Devnagri when it has its own script which is as beautiful as the language. Why he suggests to take persian and Arabic words from Urdu to make it simple for people to understand. What a dumb suggestion from a man who himself is connected to literature. Urdu and Persian is the beauty of Urdu language that has made what it is known and loved for. That is its sweetness, cultural grandeur and the richness in the syntax coming from Persian and Arabic words. Why Urdu has to lose its personality to fit into someone's heart and mind liked by those who has no love and respect for the originality of language. If people don't like Urdu with Arabic and Persian words because of Islam and Muslims, its their stupidity because Arabic and Persian are Pre-Islamic languages and are still spoken by non-muslims in the world. Majority community which is the ruling community is not only denying Urdu's position and status in the nation but also trying to steal the identity of the language on the basis of faith of its speakers shows certainly a moral collapse of that community.

I am a big fan of the Urdu language but I must say something to you. Its very unfortunate that your prejudice will never let you understand the "WHY ?" that you were talking about. And BTW the syntax of Urdu doesn't come from either Arabic or Persian. It comes from Hindi and Brij Bhasha which in turn comes from Sanskrit. Don't believe me ? refer to Javed Siddiqui sahab. Also what was that about majority community being a ruling community nonsense that you uttered ? Well let me tell you India is a democracy and there is no ruling community here. We are governed and not ruled but maybe your slave mind which has "submitted" itself to an ideology can't grasp it. And what is that crap about stealing the identity of the language on the basis of faith of its speakers ? hahahah . language is of regions and never of any religion. I suggest you educate yourself a little more and banish your prejudice and maybe you will understand why the Urdu Ras- mol- Khat is on a decline. Because my Father and all my Uncles were taught Urdu in Farsi Ras- mol- Khat but today its nowhere to be seen in most of India ... Which is where Urdu is from "India". To my mind it is very clear people of your mindset are to be blamed for its decline at least a 50% and the other 50% I blame the people on the other side of the spectrum who ironically share your mindset.

@@amlendu123Wah. aaj ke technological jamaane me hum hindi bhi roman script me likhte hai. Jaroor urdu script bhi seekhi jaaye. Jaise hum hindi ko devnagri me padh kar achha mahsoos karte hai waise hi wo log jo log urdu script kam umar se seekh jaate hai emotionally attach ho jaate hai. Isiliye itne rigid ho jaate hai. Khair Bhasha ko liberal hi hona chahiye.

There is little bit difference between Urdu and Hindi, Pakistani PUNJABIS promoted Urdu, born Allama Iqbal,Faiz Ahmad Faiz and so many others but MQM upites Karachi hatred attitude against Punjabi is dragging PUNJABIS towards their own language Punjabi which they left in 1849, There is strong sense of identity being created in Punjabis(60%) due to hostile attitude of Karachities and other ethnic groups of Pakistan.

Rekhta please don't send such idiots to interview the persons of such calibre as Gulzar saab ...it not only insults the person being interviewed but also tarnishes your name. Interviewer was unprepared to ask relevant questions, unaware about the subjects he wants to ask about, pedantic about the vision and overall a totally unprofessional candidate for the job.👎🏼👎🏼 Gulzar saab was as elegant and sophisticated and patient as ever and spoke so well. 👍
