Dr. Choi goes over how to tell if you have a gum graft failure, why it failed, and how to prevent it from happening. Also goes over options for retreatment if the gum graft fails.
I was given minimal post op instructions told not to bite down on teeth, lower bottom teeth, and to avoid foods hard to chew. I asked for a handout, and they didn't have one. Should have been given Advil or Tylenol before I left. It was very painful. I did look online, so got information there. Wasn't expecting to go back and find out the surgery didn't work and that I have scar tissue. Wish I would have gone to someone like you.
By biting hard do you mean like clenching of the teeth even during sleep. All I have is a rubber night guard and I’ve already told my period several times about my concern.
I had an donor gum graft (i.e Alloderm) about 5.5 weeks ago, so my post is only specific to that procedure. If you got the same one and are concerned about white tissue, it may be perfectly normal. In my case, the dentist left some of the donor tissue hanging out past the gum line (covering the top part of the teeth) and that part was white, and stayed white. I assume it was there to protect the entry point and try to help the gum lower a bit. Those white parts eventually fell off around weeks 3 to 4. I asked my dentist about white tissue being a sign of failure and he said it's normal for parts to be white because not everything receives blood right away (so layers may die off). At this point, the dentist says the healing is going well and my gums feel great so the white tissue I had turned out to be a non issue. Hang in there fellow gum grafters and God Bless.
Thanks for your information. I have hyperplasia on my back molars both side as a result of wearing a partial plate for over 50 years. I have had surgical removal of this about 25 years ago but it comes back, no surprise. I also have recession front mandible. Can the hyperplasia tissue on upper back teeth (assuming it is healthy) be used to graft mandible recession?
@@HelderP1337 It took a month to fully return to normal. But honestly, in my case you can’t really see a difference. I don’t see myself getting any more grafting done.
I had a extraction and gum graft last week. Cheek was swollen for the first few days and bruised. Now i have a big lump between the gum and jaw near the bone graft. I had it done 4 days ago. It almost looks like the gum is caving in on the one side. Is this normal?
@acspectator8636 0 seconds ago I have my graft done of teeth numbers 7,10,11. I have severe bruxism and all I have is just a rubber otc night guard for my lower jaw(I typically make them for my upper jaw). It’s scary to hear some in the comments saying that they can bite down on teeth…when I have been needing to replace the guards every now and then. Despite having told my perios explicitly about it and the possible worst case scenarios. They said I can wear the bottom guard. I hope that they aren’t overconfident or that the stitches are strong enough. I’ve told them how I express that the bruxism could jeopardize everything but they remained confident.
I had a gum graft 5 or 6 days ago, I do vape and have struggled to not do so with my graft, and I’ve hit it very small only a few times each night since my graft because I couldn’t help myself. I know this is incredibly stupid of me but I couldn’t fight my impulse, but now I’m freaking myself out because I don’t know if the graft will work or not off of just a few hits. I’ve been taking care of it and following all other post op instructions, but I just don’t know if it’s working or not. Is there any way I can check or know if I’m still on the right track, or am I screwed because I took a few small puffs? A response would be greatly appreciated because I’m kinda freaking out and I want it to work but I just couldn’t help my self a few times over the past few days
I had a military doctor do my gum graft. And I am skeptical that they performed it well. I’m on day 5 and i think I have some whitening around the gums
HELP!!! Dr. Choi I've been told that I need another bone graft. The last one I have was in 2007 and it the same area. Now the same aging periodontist wants to do the same procedure. I got to researching and now I'm seeing they are less invasive and modern procedures. Should I say hold up on this procedure? By the way I don't smoke, I don't vape, I'm not diabetic.
Had a gum graft 5 days ago and I can’t really tell if it’s a success or not.. I see some of the tissue turned whitish but I was told that was normal. I’m not in pain but there is still some discomfort like I can feel the graft was done on that tooth. How long can I refrain from smoking marijuana? I don’t use tobacco just Mary Jane
Got my stitches and membrane removed last week. Now I'm on week 3 and got very little yellow liquid coming out of a small hole... Haven't even been given antibiotics when I first got it done. Contact doc?
Thanks for the info I have an implant tooth at the upper lateral incisor And my Dentist said the gum is receding and recommended the gum graft. Is it fine to do gum graft on this area? And no impact to the implant tooth?
@@sho9214 hi did you do the gum graft? I was told the same for my implant ... I also feel pain im the gum around my implant ... Bur i dont have infection
Hi, I got my gum graft a week ago, and the pain is gone. I brush my teeth everywhere except the area but no matter, I still have an oder that returns back to my mouth. Is this a sign of an infection? This is the only issue I am having
My periodontist told me not to brush any portion of mouth or even swish or spit for two whole weeks. Is this normal? My entire mouth is coated in a sticky layer of food residue and white sloughing tissue from quitting vaping for the surgery (I assume). I’m worried I have tartar and cavities developing because of these aftercare instructions. The mouth washes they gave me are far too gentle to cut through the food and plaque especially without any kind of swishing movement…
Hello Dr. Choi, I just got my first gum graft done on my lower left teeth (6 altogether) I am on my 3rd almost 4th day, I have tried not to disturb the area, but I see the very back molar has a patch of white on the bottom (but thankfully the others look like they are healing properly ) I have a follow-up appointment on the 25th, I’m wondering if I should remove that piece of tissue or leave it ? I worry about getting an infection
I have question please I also did gum graft on my lower teeth and today I was applying gel and accidentally I touched the gum and it’s moveable🥹is it normal???please and thank u for ur answer!!

@@TenzSang not relating to your question but may I ask how much it cost or was it paid via insurance?
@@DinnerBells I’m so scared. Two of my upper teeth the gum has receded and I need gum grafts, I have dental phobia after a childhood incident. Was there much pain during the procedure?
@@pubbets7290 Hey, I had this procedure done once already and I just had it done again 2 days ago. As the doctor said in the video, find a good surgeon and you'll be fine. Also follow the post-op instructions. Pain wise, I've felt literally none aside from when I got the local anesthesia, but everyone is different. One important thing I've found about this procedure is that you have to be careful about managing bleeding around the donor area afterwards, then again, everyone is different. As for you phobia, I'd suggest to get informed and learn some techniques online about how to get in a good mental space for operations. I was very nervous about surgeries a few years ago, I'm sure you can overcome it too. Dental care is very very important and it leads to a healthier life, I hope you're able to overcome your fear. Take care!
own tissue is always more predictable. donor tissue definitely can be used with very good predictability too but its kind of hard to find a good periodontist that is predictable with it with all your teeth, with any instance of bone loss, etc.
i had a gum graft 4 weeks go. I just looked at it and it looks like the grats are pinkish with a little bit of white in them. I read that means they fully generated? But my lower mouth where hte graft was done has been swollen the past few days.
I think part of my gum graft failed. I got to get stitches out in two days. I've taken care not to disturb the area, but I can feel movement and when I touch it with my tongue, it feels very coarse compared to the other areas that were grafted. Is this feeling a possible indicator or could this mean the donor tissue was applied backwards?
I had a gum graft done last week and I’ve noticed that the site was white/grayish/black. I thought it was normal, but grew concerned. I’m going to see my dentist this week, but I the graft fell off.
I just had a gum graft done last Friday (5 days ago) and the whole area where the graft was located is still nearly as numb as it was during the procedure. It's also looking kind of white in one area, though I try not to pull at my lip or cheek to not disturb it so can't really see all of it. Should I wait one more week for the post-op appointment or request to be seen before then, assuming there's any way to save the graft from potentially failing?
Do you recommend pinhole technique in 3 months in case of a graft failure? I had my surgery a week ago and I see a white patch near one of my teeth. I can’t think of anything else but get over it
@@imeldacordova7908 hi. No I haven't done gum graft. I had only one tooth with receded gum due to one misaligned tooth. The recession has been there for like 10 years, it was the consequence of my childhood orthodontics. I just decided to live with it now. Trying to keep excellent hygiene by water flossing and brushing twice daily.
Today I’m 3 days after my surgery and I had to work and someone made me laugh and it hurt so much (this kind of movement has happened a few times) I’m so scared that my graft is going to fail because it keeps oozing blood (I can see a little in my Invisalign retainers)
I just had a gum graft done 6 days ago and today it was hurting again, I am a heavy smoker - of course I wish to quit - and the periodontist said that smoking would not make it fail, but I don't know, I can see the top of it looks red and I doubt it is attaching properly. What happens if the gum graft fails? I go back to the periodontist to have it checked in a few days.
I had to get it done a 2nd time as during my 1st try I accidentally hit the graft in my sleep. If it's not successful this time, I'm just gonna get the tooth extracted... Ridiculous.
@@vanessahuizar11 How do you get a gum graft? Where does the gun come from? A dead body? Also, if you don't mind could you give a ballpark estimate to about how much the cost is? Thanks
I paid $4000 in Canada for 2 little bottom front teeth. I did also have conscious sedation. I hope it works. I'm only on day 4 and I'm a nervous wreck. Plus my allergies are acting up and I've been sneezing and coughing a bit which is making me freak out more.
heyy i got my frenectomy removed earlier this week like 3days ago or 4 and i heard them say they put a gum graft on it n i have to leave it alone for a week or so to not remove it until i checkup on them again 10days after. thing is earlier today i lifted my lip to see it if the graft was still placed right there between the upper two teeth n it seemed like a hole was in there. like above the graft where the frenectomy was i seen the graft go up but it looked like a hole and i cried n panic i cant find images on google to see how its suppose to look after. is this normal???!! they didnt stitch anything but put a gummy thing on it
I have severe autoimmune disease and my body rejects anything that’s not me and even attacks my own tissue. I’m scheduled for gum grafting in two weeks. How likely is it that my body will reject the donor tissue?
I bet you got gum grafting already but this is what I got at kriss ai, "gum grafting is a common procedure used to treat gum recession and improve the health and appearance of your gums. However, having a severe autoimmune disease can complicate the healing process and increase the risk of complications, including the potential rejection of donor tissue." Anyway, how was the procedure??
My gums have thinned out over the years of vaping. I didn't know that it could cause this issue. Now I'm depressed about how my gums look and how it's going to affect me in the future. How much does this procedure typically cost doing it with donor tissue? I'd like to do this but I heard it's a pretty expensive procedure and pretty scary too.
@@huntersaunders6136 I'm fine thank you. I went to the dentist to get them checked out but they said that i'm ok. They didn't really agree with me that my gums have thinned out. Which is kind of weird. I know my body and my gums didn't look like this before. Probably because not a lot of research have been put into the effects of vaping to oral health? But I know for a fact that nicotine constricts blood vessels so I can see this having an effect on my gums. What I suggest is to completely stay off nicotine. You might still be fine. How bad are your gums now?
@@Ed-uu9eo I quit a week ago, my front two teeth have recessed and I can tell but I went to the dentist for a check up. The dentist didn’t know much about the effects of nicotine on the gums unfortunately. I briefly explained to her from all the research I have done. My teeth are sensitive and I hate it so much. I used to have fantastic gums and teeth but I can feel them shifting. Just from one year. I wish I could go back in time and never picked one up. I have an ortho appointment this week. It’s a bummer
@George Email I’m the same age as you and need to find a periodontist here in Thailand where I live. Need to do a deep clean and gum grafts (if I can find somewhere that does it). I really wish I’d taken better care of my teeth...
Hi Dr Choi, I have a question my periodontist didn't seem to know the answer to. How long after gum graft surgery until I can perform oral s*x on male partners. Hoping you reply because I'm way too embarrased to ask anyone else!
Got a graft on bottom left nd it didn’t take fully cover. Did it on right & same thing. Redid bottom left while I did some on top and it still doesn’t fully cover Feeling suicidal. I fucked my teeth for life and might lose a lot of my bone. There only seems to be one way out of it
I had mine done three days ago and I can already tell it's failed as some of the parts of the graft that filled in the gaps of the tooth are starting to come off when I breathe. Maybe it was my fault for putting an ice pack on my lip but I didn't do it too hard only left the house once to go to the pharmacy and think I've said maybe like 5 sentences. Haven't brushed it and followed every instruction and honestly I'm praying I'm wrong when I go back in two days for the periodontist to check it. Literally could cry spent so much money and took two weeks off work but hey ho 😫
@Boruto Haise I've no idea if it's failed my periodontist said its too early too tell and to just keep doing the recovery. I've been extremely paranoid about it as it doesn't look like the pictures I see on google of what it's suppost too look like 🥲. But it's only day 7 so time will tell
@@kerriesilcock2069 well i hope you’re gum graft goes well and you’re happy with you’re results if it makes you feel any better my whole bottom gums need grafting so you’re not alone
@Imelda cordova on day 12 now it's good can start to eat more like fries, some cereal and other things if they are broken into small pieces. No pain and I can talk more now. But a very small part of mine didn't take and its falling off I've no idea if that was suppost to happen but I'm calling tomorrow to get her too look but majority of it has taken and I'm happy with it.
Not much. The procedure sounded to me worse than it actually feels. I got my grafts yesterday, and already I'm off painkillers (all I used yesterday was Ibuprofen). The main problem is not pain but the restrictions on life style, namely, bans on the following: eating foods that are chewy, crunchy, acidic, or hot; leaning on the side of the mouth where the surgery performed as one might be in the habit of doing during sleep; opening the mouth in large movements as during talking; tooth brushing. Most of this, I am told, should be unnecessary after a month, at the end of which I have a post-op appointment to see if it actually worked.
The healing process was brutal. I want to go back in time and slap past me for doing this procedure. I'm sure it is necessary for some people but I think I got suckered in by people looking to make money off me.
