The first part is one of the most beautiful pieces of contemporary classical music ever

A real triumph. I’ve been in a serialist/atonal echo chamber at University, what a tonic this is. Thank you David.

That’s because most uni composers don’t know how to write music that audiences or players want to hear, in any genre or style, let alone consider the practical performance needs of performers 🫢

@nilesloughlin6845 That's a gross generalization, but I understand what you're saying. It really depends on who the faculty is.

I never thought that I needed a piece about gumboots. But now after hearing it, I wonder why I wouldn’t want a piece about gumboots

Since nobody else is saying this, I just have to point out the absolutely masterful playing on the bass clarinet here. Getting into the sixth octave C is hard enough but Julian Bliss goes all the way up to F#6 without sounding too thin. To be honest I didn't think that register was useful for anything but gimmicks and showing off. The vibrato makes it even more impressive because up there each note is already so treacherous that even slight errors in lip pressure or placement will yield the wrong pitch. This man is a serious contender for the best clarinet player in the world. Edit: I should mention that an F#6 on the soprano clarinet is not that difficult but he's essentially playing an octave higher than that.

I agree, it takes an amazing embouchure to be able to do that. I tried playing that pitch on my bass clarinet, and even the slightest difference in my tongue placement made the pitch change between F, F#, and G. It's not too hard to hit the note, but it takes insane skill to keep it in tune
@shitfuckmcgee8611
@shitfuckmcgee8611 Год назад
@@mistermessy735 To be honest I don't have much experience with the bass clarinet so I'm at least a little wrong about how hard these notes are to hit.

@@shitfuckmcgee8611 well on bass these super high altissimo notes are certainly easier to make speak, but they’re definitely hard to control the way he does.

this is phenomenal. I've known about David bruce through the RU-vid channel for a long time, but have always been put off by this title, and haven't listened to to until now because of that. what a mistake, this is absolutely amazing :)

They've played the piece many times and recorded it, so this was one of those performances that made me feel like my piece was 'part of the repertoire', because it just felt like they knew it inside out. This was a live recording during covid.

I've been a longtime fan of your main channel but always loved most the videos where you explained your compositions and then let us hear the whole thing. So yeah, loving this new channel of yours and this piece is incredible. Have you written much for bassoon? Please tell me yes, and if the answer is no I want to figure out a way to get a commissioning group going. 100% not kidding, this needs to be a thing. You have my email already from a contrabassoon submission I sent you.

It sounds vaguely Asian to me. Is it based on pentatonic themes?
@natheniel

I think it’s the metre. The irregular (but there are many irregular metre in western sounding music too?) asymmetric (but 22122 at the end is symmetric?) odd (well 3 beat is also odd?) metres in the dances makes it sounds non-western European. The scale does contribute too of course.
