Gun was loaded. Gun owner is in heap of trouble. Negligence is not a defense. Being stupid is not a defense. Gun owner grandpa was negligent and stupid.
@@tansywelsh1636 It is more prevelant of late. My uneducated guess is parents allowing violent video games. The child does not realize death is permanent. I don't understand why these people leave firearms just laying around like pop bottles.. 😢
It's seems a bit far fetched to accuse the 6 year old cousin of loading the gun. Because if he kept it unloaded, that has to be his defense of another senseless killing of a young child by a firearm.
Yeah I highly doubt a self defense shotgun wasn't loaded. Bird shot is a terrible choice for home defense. I highly doubt a six year old knows how to load a single shell.
Completely lying. Leaving a gun in reach of children is the first thing a responsible gun owner knows to Never do,Ever! Always lock up every gun around children.
The kid accidentally picked it up. He “accidentally” pointed at his cousin. And he “accidentally” pulled the trigger. He knew what he was doing. Stop blaming everyone else.
horrible accident. that 6 year old is a victim, too. The poor families. The gun owner was foolish, and he has to live out his life knowing he is responsible for that child's death.
that's a little to broad of a statement, a 16 or 17 year old is still a kid and their are plenty of them that know how to use a grinder or a torch, I did at that age, those "kids" can still access your guns if they really want to... so if my 16 year old nephew breaks into my house, cuts the cable locking my guns to the wall and smashes the lock off my ammo box I should still be held responsible?
@@tylermallory2504 YUP! STILL liable! Prosecution of careless gun owners and subsequent consequences are the *only* way to get it through people's heads: BE AWARE OF YOUR WEAPOJS AT *ALL* TIMES, DUMMY!! If people see that they'll actually get in *trouble* for it, you better believe they're gonna make things more safe.
No reason to keep ON safe if it’s unloaded. Then he says he “doesn’t know where he got the bullet from” but then later says he leaves bullets all over? Irresponsible gun owner. Period! Charges should be filed no question!
That's incorrect gun handling there buckaroo, safety stays on until it is in use, regardless of if it is loaded, I know you're going to try and argue but don't because it will only make you look foolish, you are spreading improper use of a weapon, now you know!
The safety stays on no matter if it's loaded or not because if you don't adhere to this practice you might be the dummy who forgets to put the safety on when it is loaded!
Every reason to keep it on safe if it’s unloaded. Because it’s called multiple points of failure. One safety is not enough multiple safeties are locking the gun, putting it on safe, keeping it unloaded
Rule number one is always to treat every gun as if it is floated. Never pointed at anything you do not intend to shoot. Always always rule number one in safety handling of a firearm.
I am also very concerned for the boy that accidentally shot his own cousin and will have to live with that for as long as he lives. I can only imagine the nightmares.
@@ieattofu68 There was also a little girl present during this horror; she and the little boy with the gun will never forget that awful killing. And to think that they thought their "grandpa" would protect them??
Apparently this was the boy's grandfather who "kept the gun in the same place for 10 years". And the boy's father didn't know this, although he said on camera that "they all knew there was guns in that room"? Notice he said GUNS not A GUN. Does that make him culpable too? Just makes me curious. An avoidable tragedy nevertheless.
grandmother knowing the guns were in that room should have never let the kids go in there to watch tv, the boy that was shot-his dad was not there he was at work.
He didn't know how the boy figured out how to use the gun? Seriously?! If a child can figure out how to use a video game controller, they can figure out how to use a gun. Especially one that's been pre-loaded with bird shot. It doesn't matter if you genuinely thought you had left it unloaded or not.
I grew up with complete access to firearms. No gun safes in my house. I was also taught firearm saftey and didnt even think that guns were something "cool" or something that i wanted to mess with just to be rebellious or whatever. Teaching kids that guns are bad and never to touch them will only make them more curious and a curious kid with no safety training is how accidents happen.
The father of the child must have known the gun owner the grandfather kept guns in his home (the way he did which was negligently) yet still allowed his child to go there and be babysit there. It’s tragic yet the dad most likely knew and over looked it himself.
you must not have read the police report, the dad of the child that was shot was at work.. and the dad of the child that got shot was MY son, who cried uncontrollably for 5 days, who is also has epilepsy and had 4 seizers in 3 days because he got himself worked up from loosing his son. the other thing the news isnt reporting is that the gun was NOT there for 10 years, He might have owned it for 10 years but the grandfather use to keep it behind the pellet stove loaded,in the living room. he was told 5 yrs ago to take care of it, put it up. so yea Im sure my son did thin that the grandfather would be bright enough to put the gun away out of childrens reach. If you would like more of the truth I will be happy to share.
The first thing my father taught me about weapons is that any gun is "always" loaded. The second thing my father taught me about guns is that any body could accidentally allow the gun go off, but if it's not pointed at anybody then nobody gets shot.
Except for the fact that bullets can ricochet off something and then hit someone and someone can also get hit by shrapnel or pierced by glass from a window shattering or go through a wall or the ceiling or the floor etc . The first rule for responsible gun ownership should be any gun that is not in your hand being used or securely in a holster on your body should be kept at all times safely and securely with trigger locks and locked up in a proper gun safe with the ammo .
@@Dave-ul8px Anyone knowing about guns realizes that they can all be secured from children. Only an idiot does not know that, and such idiots need to go to jail when they allow innocents to be shot due to their idiocy.
@@Dave-ul8px I am the grandmother on the other side, I see your point very clearly, my question is and has been who uses a 12 gauge shot gun for self defence when there was also a loaded 9mm in the night stand drawer with another loaded clip next to it in the same room..... I think the point Im making is that the grandmother knew the gun was in that room behind the door and still allowed the kids to go in there to watch tv, now to me and my thinking I would never allow any kids in my room if I knew there were guns in there, loaded or not. Kids find everything, but with this being a law the grandfather and the grandmother should both be held accountable and charged the max sentence. They lost a grandchild to but if you could see how they act outside of the court room maybe the picture would be clearer for most. They act as if nothing happened, like no big deal, how they did nothing wrong, while all of us are still over here grieving every single day and most of us cant find a way to move forward, I just wish people would put themselves in our shoes ( at least try to imagine) the grieve we are going thru, the hurt, betrayal and to see them grandparents in the court room , the grandmother emotionless and the grandfather puts on a good act- looking down all the time like a scared little kitten but the minute he got out of jail on bond he was laughing and carrying on down at the river. Just doesnt seem like much devistation to us.
@@darrendykstra3495 I think we could find common ground if the left could be trusted. If a parent leaves a loaded firearm in the house with little children can a child gets hold of the gun it hurts or kill someone with the parents should be charged. But not all families are the same. The vast majority of people that own firearms teach their children how to handle and respect firearms. The problem with the left is there's never enough gun control.
“I didn’t know it was loaded”. The excuse of the pathetically inept gun owner. When you fire a pump shotgun and eject the shell, it reloads the chamber. Sounds like the gun really was loaded.
wtf, a gun is always loaded. Period. Never point one at anyone or anything you don’t intend to kill. I learned that by five years old. Was around guns my entire childhood.
@@Tomc8030 Your absolutely right .This is hard all the Way around the little boy that got killed (accidently) .The little boy that pulled the trigger. The girl who witnessed it. And poor Grandpops . Just a heartbreaking situation that people like to put a spin on that there's no way it could be a accident. What can I say the world is full of hate. People really need to get back to the simple life Family, Church, everything closed on Sundays ect ect. Have a nice day.
Idiots with guns. Many people have been shot with "unloaded" guns. I regularly recheck my weapons to be sure they're not loaded because we can forget. The rules of safe gunhandling apply all the time. Pick one up, check its status -- every time. Treat every gun like it's loaded no matter what.
Obviously that is a LIE. Obviously NOT a responsible gun owner. RESPONSIBLE Gun owners ALWAYS KNOW the CONDITION OF THEIR WEAPON. NEVER leave your Firearms out with children around. Lock them in a SAFE.
Yes, they should go to jail that’s why they just made that law. Laziness is why they didn’t have the gun lock on there just pure laziness and stupidity and you need to serve your 15 years in prison for that
How did he kill "critters" if the gun was NEVER loaded???? He is lying. Leaving a loaded gun around with kids there is dangerous enough and to shoot animals is bad also.😢
It was an accident. It wasn't loaded. I didn't pull the trigger. Yet kids in accidental shoots are always struck in the head or chest. 🤔 Teach your kids to treat all guns like loaded guns.
This irresponsible gun owner is who you’re telling should have taught the children gun safety. Apparently he didn’t know it himself and apparently you can’t recognize it either.
Even if you’re not a gun owner your children should be taught about them in case they are ever around them . Definitely the adults fault, but had the kid been taught some gun safety maybe this wouldnt have happened
@@mykehunt2430 And you had another one who believes teaching small children about dangerous weapons will make them safe. Why don’t you show me a study that shows that’s true. Children don’t understand. It sounds someone else raised yours when they were small.
because that's part of gun safety, you always leave the safety on until the moment you are ready to shoot unloaded or not. just like you treat every gun as if it's loaded no matter if it actually is or isnt...
People need to start teaching their children gun safety quit being neglectful parents and not teaching your children about guns and what they're capable of
We are empty nesters without family nearby, no grandkids, and rarely have visitors. We do have guns, for self-defense if necessary, and I wouldn't even let children IN THE HOUSE until they were all secured. Tragic.
The grandfather is liable and yes he should face charges. It's sad. We need a lot of PSAs about locking guns. Perhaps even a tax ccreditfor purchasing a gun safe
FOR $ 189.00, father could have bought a 'ShotLock' and mounted it to a closet wall stud--Shotgun would have loaded, secured from unauthorized hands, but is immediately accessible. So miserably sad.... Be responsible a gun owner y'all .
Basic Firearms Safety Rule #1: ALWAYS treat all firearms as if they are loaded. Basic Firearms Safety Rule #2: NEVER point a firearm at anyone you do not intend to shoot. Basic Firearms Safety Rule #3: ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until you have taken aim at your intended target AND made the decision to fire. Basic Firearms Safety Rule #4: ALWAYS be sure of your target AND what is beyond your target. There is no such thing as an "accidental" shooting. The ONLY way for this to happen, is to CHOOSE to violate ALL FOUR of the Basic Firearms Safety Rules. If any ONE of those rules had been obeyed, this wouldn't have happened.
Sad story, but basic gun safety rules were not followed. Treat every gun like it is loaded, never point a gun at something unless you intend to destroy it. Prayers for all involved.
You’re complaining about gun safety among children. You don’t have a word to say about the negligent gun owner, who left a loaded gun where children could reach it.
This happens way too often. How many thousands of idiots still keep loaded weapons laying around the house with kids everywhere. Then one day "Heck man I dint know the dang thang was loaded." I don't even have kids at home & my guns are locked up.
@@ZeCahliracist twang? Wow thats pathetic. And what race they going after with that? Was it the “heck” ,”dang” or the “thang” ? And which color do you assign those words to since yer so “not racist “?
@@ianbattles7290 Well that kind of depends. Not being a parent myself. It is possible for a minor to be a Damian Hellspawned devilchild demigorgon demon. In which case a parent might leave a loaded firearm out. Accidentally of course. Pure hypothetical scenario. Sort of when I was 19, the cops locked me inside their patrol vehicle and left in hot summer sun for 3 hours in un-airconned car. Accidentally of course. True story. This was before all the gruesome hot car deaths. I was dehydrated, and doctor said that brain damage was minimal. The doctor was in fact Egyptian. Dr. Said.
kids that age don't understand the danger of guns. if you tell them to never point a gun at someone, that's what they do right away they get to hold it. here a family member died due to the old man's nonchalance in keeping the weapon in a safe place.dont blame the kid.
Teach children not to touch things they shouldn’t. My grandfather kept his guns on a display case in the living room and all us grandkids knew if we even thought of touching one then we’d get the belt. We were taught young that they weren’t toys and not to be touched without supervision.
As a gun expert myself, I can tell you that the rifle was loaded. I have handled shotguns at least 3-5 times in my career as an expert firearms master and if you don’t have a shell in the chamber it will not fire. This rifle had to have a shell loaded or it wouldn’t have been able to fire.
