Great way to offload questionably functional crap guns for a profit. Some of them attract people from out of town/state if the price is high enough above the actual fair value of certain guns. Mainly just captures a lot of junk that was never going to be used in a crime anyway. I feel like there are two scenarios here. The police should not be able to justify an investigation with something they obtained during a "no questions asked" buyback. there is more at stake here. the fact is that Chicago has a LOT of homicides, and will have more in the future. the gun buy-back program is a goal to reduce the number of the homicides in the future. solving 1 case isn't going to stop future homicides as much as reducing the amount of guns on the streets. while the success of the gun buy-back program can be called into question, they cannot lose the trust of the community just to try to solve 1 case. it's simply not a good business model. This "buyback program" reminds me of something: ~15 years ago, when the whole "killer video games"-debate was at its highest in Germany, some conservative politicians actually did such a program for games. They brought a container and kids and parents were ask to bring their "dangerous games" to trash them. Giant container and after the event, there were like five games and a condom in it...
