.300 blackout is exists because people wanted something larger than 5.56 but don’t want 9mm. If people have a gun in .300 blackout they usually run a short barrel with a suppressor and subsonics. .300 blackout is a range toy caliber not for serious use and if you do put it in proper rifle setup with a 16 inch barrel 7.62x39 does it better.

I think a 7.5 inch AR is analogous to taking a 10 lb sledge hammer and shortening the handle down to the length of a 16 oz hammer. It's not made completely useless as a tool, but the scenarios in which it's the best tool become severely limited and it's no longer able to deliver the sort of impact that it was designed for. Unless you are planning on clearing rooms or engaging targets from inside a vehicle, there's not many situations where a 7.5 inch barrel is more useful than a longer one.

Great description. Everyone I know with a 7.5 uses it for vehicle and very close quarters . Honestly for me personally I use a 10.5 for a vehicle and close quarters. Still can reach out but close range you're not losing the energy. 10.5 is the go to for my GF and I for urban. I also have a 16" that is longer range and still can be used CQB. The 10.5 has been my go to because of neck and shoulder Injuries. The weight is less and does make a difference for pain. Even while slung.

@johnconner5348
@johnconner5348 Год назад
@@Khundryl The only leg to stand on in this debate is the weight of the ammo. 700 rounds of 5.7 = 210 rounds of 5.56 (combat load as a benchmark) The 5.7 will have less concussion and muzzle flash so it’s a much more enjoyable experience but it’s still a supersonic round.. So, less signature from the 5.7 but still the crack. The FN PS90 is 26.23” and if you form 1 it to SBR and run it as a true (semi) P90 you can bring it down to 19.88”… The 7.5” AR will run around 24” so about 4” longer (she said that’s a lot) than the NFA SBR P90 and 2” shorter than a PS90. With a 5.56 PMAG D-60 or better yet a KCI double drum 100 round mag far surpasses the 5.7 50 round max mag size for the FN P/PS90 substantially. Ballistically the advantage goes to the 5.56 all day and maybe 2 days more if you run the 10.39” SBR P90. Are there better barrel lengths ballistically for 5.56? Yes, every barrel length in 5.56 is better than a 7.5”... Is the 7.5” combat effective? I don’t know 😂 But what I do know is I’ve seen first hand what it will do to armadillo (I ranch black Angus, and I eradicate the invasive species of armadillos any chance I get to protect my cattle). Armadillos have the 7th toughest skin of all animals on earth. From personal experience a 5.56 from a 7.5” barrel (125ish yards and in) is not only an ethical kill, but it is devastating. I’d be very interested to hear from anyone with first hand experiences of 5.7 that stumbles across this.. Side note, would I take my 7.5” to a gun fight? No, I have an 18” for that imaginary situation. ^ The audiobook is available on apple 😂😂

10.5/10.3 is about as short as you want to go. I've got a Mk18 upper build I did a few years back.. it's still my favorite rifle and has performed flawlessly but I "built" it knowing it would suppressed for 99% of its use. Things wander in and get all mangled. I just ordered my 10.5 PSA upper. I need to get a proper buffer for it too, but everything else is already here. 12.5 seems to be a magic spot for compact size with solid performance. Look at the 9 hole reviews Gordon carbine and see how well it performs on their tests. I agree with chad about 11.5 being the shorted I would go for a build. 11.5 has better velocity that 10.5 and something like 40% more dwell time than a 10.5 for 1 inch you gain extra reliability performance and capability over a 10.5

Knowing what 223/5.56 intended for I.e. speed/velocity…10 years ago I still decided to build a 7.5 AR for simply the reason just because I wanted to. This was around the time at pistols were becoming popular. Built it and brought it to the range after zeroing and messing with some heavier buffers I brought it work just fine, and really got a kick out of the fireballs and getting looks at the range like I just lit off a cannon😂. Funny thing though happened I apparently shot out the barrel after maybe 1000rounds with maybe 7-8 trips to the range over the course of say 5 years. It had a stainless steal bull barrel from who made it idk but distributed by “red x arms” wound up replacing it with a chf barrel and had no problems since. Now yes I do consider it a range toy but if I “had to” defend myself in close quarters I’d use it…would make the bad guys go def and blind them with a huge fireball (along with myself) but It’d still work. Also never had any malfunctions of any kind out of it with now thousand of rounds it eats everything.

I own several AR platforms, including a 7.5 inch .223 wylde. It would be my go to post apocalypse car gun, I'd only trust xm193 or Speer gold dot soft point, or sierra game king, maybe civil defence. Xm193 from a car with that barrel starts tumbling and still creates a devastating wound cavity. The 2 expanding rounds create amazing wound channels, and the civil defence is basically made for short barrel ars

I have over 500rds thru each of them and the same results. The shorter AR's in 223 chew thru buffers and suffer from unreliability. They jam. 223 SBRs have a huge flash and sound like an explosive detonation. They erode suppressors. They are a ton of fun at the range at night or indoor ranges at low lights, but an unsuppressed Mk18 can cause permanent ear damage. Plenty of Ballistic videos of 223 SBRs here on RU-vid, but worth finding out for yourself they don't work well. Enthusiasts geek-out on gas port sizes and buffer weights instead of just running a 16, 18, or 20 inch barrel rifle instead. But if you have a 7.5" AR pistol, and thats the gun within reach when a life threatening emergency happens, and hit your opponent in the head, I doubt he will survive to discredit your barrel length. 52gr GMX all copper still does 2400fps out of an 8.1" AR pistol and does 4x the damage of a 9mm JHP at 25m. JPR flash hider brings the 8.1" barrel's flash down to A2 birdcage on a 16" carbine levels.

I agree, in 5.56/223 anything less than 10.5 barrel is a range toy, in my opinion. The fireballs are fun and putting a cookie cutter break it is obnoxious.

I agree with you both. I think 7in AR's are not the best way to go. I personally have a 10.5 and a 16. The 10.5 gives me the maneuverability I need to navigate my home (I'll probably go to a 11.5). However, I don't think anyone wants to get hit with a 11.5 or 10.5.

223 fired from a 7.5 inch barrel gets 2400 feet per second with a 55 grain projectile. That's 700 foot pounds which is comparable to 357 and 10mm. 9mm +p hottest loads get to 500 foot pounds max, and nobody calls the mp5 or the Glock g19 anemic.

The other star of the show is his rifle/side arm the Mares leg. So I started thinking a modern AR version would be pretty cool. But the Mares leg barrel length is 9 inches

Tools in a toolbox for different tasks, 18” for general use if your on the property and you can access it immediately but if you’re traveling and not much luxury of a long gun go for a 10 or 11” definitely will be fitting in that size area. Fire power vs mobility argument

I'm sure someone else has brought this up, but regardless of barrel size; a sharp projectile traveling 2k - 2500 fps is still incredibly lethal. 9mm at 7.5 inch does great and it's almost half that fps.

Hmm; here’s the thing. Some of us just like the big flash, and loud bark of a 7.5 inch. Ballistics is not as good, but for home defense and close quarters. You need that bark!

I've seen people that couldn't hit 300 with an 16 18 or a 20 much less 700 yards that's all in your training with your weapons everyone wants to be a sniper but a 556 isnt a sniper rifle

I wrote my previous comment before I watched the video and still stand by it. I just wanted to mention that Hitman Industries makes a 5" 5.56 NATO AR-15 rifle barrel. I don't even know what you would call that gas system -- sub-compact pistol length? Just for reference, my old standby 45 Auto +P 165gr COR-BON Self-Defense JHP @ 1250 fps from a 5" barrel has 573 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. IF you can get that velocity from a 55 grain bullet in a 5" AR barrel, it only has 191 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, the same as a lot of .22 LR hollow-points. Now you've taken a rifle cartridge down below pistol power to rimfire performance. Maybe. Or maybe even worse. I haven't found a ballistic calculator for 5" rifle barrels to verify it.

I personally wouldn't want a 556 with a barrel length less then 16". Around the farm it does it all. Anything shorter is more for indoor use. For that I have a ruger charger 9mm with a brace , red dot, and glock happy stick. I really want a cmmg banshee 9mm though.

I understand the rationale, it’s definitely far from a battle rifle - however I’m struggling to believe that if someone takes two-three 5.56 rounds to the chest from even a 4.5” home defense AR that they’re gonna say “ouchee” and walk out my front door.

5.56 I like 18-20 inch. 14-16 is functional but not ideal. 7.62x39 is good from 10-16 as it is t as velocity dependant. To go under 10 a different cartridge such as 300 blackout is effective but very niche. 50 beowulf is a tricky bitch to get reliable and I have not done so with a barrel less than 16 either. It seems to have a very narrow reliability window with standard buffer and bolt weights and bullet weight combinations.

I think people misunderstand the point of a 7.5 inch AR pistol. Which is that it is a high capacity, soft armor penetrating close quarters weapon. It's not for shooting a target 500 yards away.

I watched another video on RU-vid in which a guy broke down the pros of a 7.5” 556. Except in comparison with a 300 BLK, the shorty 556 actually performs better than, say, a 9mm pistol carbine. When discussing the effectiveness of a short 556, you have to compare to other similar length platforms and calibers rather than the best version of the 556. You wouldn’t compare a $30,000 car with a $60,000 version…you compare it to similar $30,000 cars.

Depends on what you are after. If you want less efficiency and MEGA DECIBELS then a 7.5 inch 556 is just the ticket. If you have a 300 Blackout, 7.5 is viable. I prefer 10.5 though. Most efficient short length for a Blackout - powder is pretty much fully burned by time the bullet leaves the barrel.
