Michael said it was a full routine but he could only nail it 1/10, he called the starburst a "fan". He said he trained with Thell Reed. He made a great Johnny Ringo. They gave depth to his character also by making him smart. When he corrected the Spanish interpreter on the "sick horse" as the pale horse from Revelation that was great. Also it's Hicks from Aliens as Ringo, one of the most badass, larger than life characters ever. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jv66vZJevx8.html

Was the cup routine a replica or was it better than Ringo’s gun spinning
@tbiz8459

I believe from what I have read that he was duplicating what Johnny Ringo had done. Also, the tin cup had a weight in the bottom for balance I think. It has been a while since I read about it. I need to find it again.

If I'm not mistaken, it took something like 10 different takes for Michael Bein to do that routine flawlessly to get the one we ended up with in the movie. They had multiple cameras rolling, for different points of view and surely they cut to those and I get that it's Hollywood but I think it was all in one take.
@gourdguru
@gourdguru Год назад
dunno if the footage is all from the same take, but Beihn spoke about this at a convention once. he said he trained with a gunspinning coach for around 3 months, he "Discovered" the starburst spin on his own after learning the horizontal spin before the coach told him someone else beat him to it, he developed the routine we see by himself, and he can actually do the entire routine in one go, but they had multiple takes because of minor mistakes like missing the hammer on a cocking motion or being sloppy on holstering the gun at the end etc. it's possible the reason that double spin draw to hammer cock looks funny is because they used part of one of the other botched takes for that shot, but who's to say?

Thanks a lot for the breakdown! This scene was the first routine I studied and annotated for my own use. Absolutely love Tombstone and Johnny’s routine. If I recall correctly Michael Biehn (actor of Johnny Ringo) was practicing his twirling and hadn’t seen the Wave/Starburst before and thought he made up that move himself at first.

Just watched the interview and yep, totally right according to Michael. Even though there is a lot of cuts in the movie, he said he could do the whole routine perfectly once in every 10, in the film he did it in one cut.

Great video about the scene in the movie. I liked how you broke down the difference between the reality of a live performance and what's possible with editing. I noticed one more thing and wondered about your take on it. From my experience handling and spinning real SAA firearms I had the feeling that Michael Biehn was spinning a aluminum replica that was significantly lighter than the SAA firearm that was depicted in the story. Your thoughts?
@rhinestoneropers9204
@rhinestoneropers9204 Год назад
HI, Even without the editing issue, you still have the multiple takes issue. I had a fellow tell me about an interview that Michael did where he said that he could hit those tricks about 1 out of 10 tries. That's about right for a talented actor who is not a professional gun spinner. I just performed with a female gun spinner who uses that move in her routine at least a half dozen times. She hit it every time like it was nothing and her pistols looked weightless. they were 45 cal Cimarron Colts. Pistol Packing Paula. In my experience, when any trick works, the guns always look weightless. I assume that Michael used either an actual Colt or a blank firing replica. Neither of which is light. I'm just guessing though.

@@rhinestoneropers9204 I am thinking it still took some serious editing, as you alluded to, and multiple takes. I gotta go back and find that video of him talking about it. I get the impression that Biehn wasn't even remotely as good as you. Doing something for a film has to be hard enough, but doing live action shows has got to be infinitely harder. I couldn't imagine the pressure. 😅 Keep up the incredible work, I really am enjoying your channel!

There's the interview where he talks about learning the tricks, and yeah he said he could only do it about 1 out of 10 times. But at least he put the time in to learn it as well as he did, many actors wouldn't do that.

Let's be very clear here. The actor only had a few months to learn how to do that. He doesn't do it for a job. I think you're being to critical in your assessment. Michael Biehn only did the tricks that the director wanted. The director had cuts in the scene that Biehn had no control over. They built the scene to impress the audience, not a gun spinning world champion. I think the director was absolutely successful with the shot
