the reason for why the character backstory's are missing in the main show, is a director switch that happened midway though the shows airing. That resulted in a production delay of about two weeks. AKA the two backstory episodes had to be replace with the two recap episodes.
The Glory of the Losers manga is like a retelling of Wing with all the added backstory from Endless Waltz as well as Episode Zero (a manga of cut backstory for all the main characters) added back in. I'm not finished it yet, but it has made a lot of the character's actions make more sense so far. You gotta get used to the redesigns for all the Gundams from Hajime Katoki, which I don't prefer as much.

I do like that it gave the Sandrock y'know. Actual ranged weapons including a decent beamrifle and even shoulder guns in the Armadillo heavy armor package, though the Armadillo's shoulder guns are tiny sadly.
As a kid I really wanted to watch Wing and couldn't catch the episodes on TV so my dad started going out and buying them directly. The memories I have of watching Gundam Wing when I went to see my dad on school vacations are some of my happiest
As one of the fans who was first introduced to Gundam through this series, I was really disappointed to go back and rewatch as an adult and see many of the same issues. I think the reason it wasnt so obvious for me as a teenager is that when it was airing, I watched it in fragmented parts. It's hard to catch every episode in order and so I think in my mind I just assumed that everything made sense and that it was just explained in episodes that I had missed. This series still holds a special place in my heart for being the show that brought me to Gundam and anime as a whole. I still remember buying a VHS of a few episodes of this series, and when I popped it in, I was hit with the 0083 trailer with Burning Love playing over awesome Gundam animation. I was mesmerized. I think this is where the Gundam obsession really began for me and I'm thankful for it! Great review btw! I always enjoy your perspective. Looking forward to which Gundam series you pick next. Personally I recommend Afterwar Gundam X. It's a wonderful story but not without its fair share of production issues. It's seriously underrated though. It aired immediately after Wing and has a lot in common with it.
It’s very rare to hear somebody ramble on and on for so long, using so many sentences and clauses, and not make a single solid point other than they are emotionally disturbed.
The biggest issue with Wing is that if you decide to watch 0079 all of it's _mojo_ vanishes. Wing was the first Gundam I watched, I thought it was decent, not bad nor outstanding but enjoyable, years later I got into the UC continuity and watched 0079 and by the time it ended I realized Wing was just a worse version of 0079, yeah in the technical aspect (animation, mech design and soundtrack) Wing is better but in narrative quality it doesn't even compare at all. The best analogy I can think of is a student in the science fair blowing everyone's minds off but then you discover the project they use is a copy of an older better made project and suddenly all initial praise vanishes.
Growing up with it i'm obviously biased but i do recognize the shows problems, a shakey dub and when you learn about it, probably the most hectic production of any of the gundam series aside maybe from Victory, resulting in a lot of issues seen in the show. However, I think if you do give it a fair shake, you'll find some surprising things the show does well, it's the first gundam to go into the idea of artificial intelligence replacing people in the battlefield which would become themes in some later series. The vibe and music are unmatched imo and while i wouldnt say the characters are great, i do feel like they attain a strong sense of conviction the further you go into the series, and they have eachothers backs despite their quarrels. Also easily my favorite Char clone in Zechs. Still need to read the manga too, i've heard nothing but good about it.
Honestly Cheems you knocked it out of the park. I remember loving Wing as a kid circa 2000-01. But when you watch it as an adult, you see the flaws and holes as it tried to be a UC ripoff for the mid 90s... But, Endless Waltz helped wrap up the the saga and was the perfect conclusion and back story to each character. As for the manga I have not read it either, but I have heard great feedback from peers who have saying it adds more layers that lead up to Mariemea's rise. Once again great retrospective, wing was my first taste of Gundam but then I became a UC loyalist in the end. If I had any none fave UC series i would be the forgotten Gundam After War X which you should cover it is like the 1985 in Back to Future Part 2 where Biff rules.
Relena loves Heero because she loves the bad boy and no one fulfills that more than the guy who threatens to kill her when they first meet. Why Heero would like her though, no clue.
gundam wing is a critical analysis of Japan's military pacifist civil defence policy with teenage melodrama. Unless you understand that you're probably not going to enjoy it as much as possible.
Of all the gundam shows i watched, wing was the one i genuinely blanked out for most of the tv series, if they lessened the number of main characters and focused on like 3 of them, they would've probably been able to make a far more compelling and comprehensive show. Tho this was definitely the most preachy gundam show, the ideas were good and the concepts were eventually reused for 00, and there i think the concept for gundam wing really shine. On the mecha side, the wing series, epyon and deathscythe were pretty much the only ones that really stuck with me on a design point. They really kept mecha designs simple, a bit too simple for most, wish they made use of that as a plot point since the early half felt like super robots fighting regular robots.
I wanted to private them, as I had a plan to revisit them now that I’ve improved on writing and editing videos (or at least I think lol). I just find it weird that people still watch them and enjoy them when I find them to be horrible, maybe that’s not the case and I’m being to harsh on myself

I didn’t grow up watching this but I really enjoyed it as kind of an unintentional comedy, especially in the English dub me and my bro got a good kick out of appreciating how over-the-top it was, as well as some occasional good animation. Definitely didn’t make me care about the story but it was very funny

You know what it’s OK do you have your own thoughts I have mine and I respect your my man though I do prefer Gundam wing EW more than the anime the wing EW is more better story combat and characters and the MS design. But I do respect your opinion bro.
All of the characters in Gundam Wing are badass. Wufei is torn about what real strength is, while practicing his form of monk like virtue. He has a strong connection with his mobile suit. Hero is a troubled revolutionary who seeks to determine his own path, but is constantly manipulated by others, this is one of the reasons he had a death wish. To be ultimately in control of his own destiny. I think you need to go back and re-watch, because you clearly hadn’t paid attention to the dialogue, it all adds up. You are extremely negative, but to make matters worse, you clearly have a short attention span, which means you missed a lot of what the show was all about.
