One of the most underrated exchanges in this movie: "Maybe I don't take the time to count today. I understand you question my honor." "I did not question it. I counted on it." It was there that Kaz proved himself as a good manager and leader. He put his faith in his workers both American and Japanese. In the end he gained the respect of Sakamoto and it was because he relied on Sakamoto's honor.

Best part of the movie that I never see a clip of..."I tell you why. Maybe he's just trying to save this town." And the guys figure it out and rally. That's all Keaton's character thought about when he got the Japanese auto maker to move to his town. Save his town. Save the people.

Not a bad movie. I wish they showed the part at the beginning of the car counting when Mr. Sakamoto (Soh Yamamura) says that Kazihiro (Gedde Watanabe) questioned his honor and he responds with: "I did not question it, I counted on it." This makes Hunt's (Michael Keaton) actions make more sense since he was willing to confront Sakamoto and indeed humiliate himself to prove his point, actions Sakamoto respected an an honorable act. Bonus 80's movie trope points for the bully getting his comeuppance when Saito (Sab Shimoto) gets made janitor.

That scene when all seems lost and hopeless, factory shut down and workers walked off, then Michael Keaton and Kaz decide together to go back inside the factory and start making the cars together, just the two of them. Leadership. The workers, curious, start showing up to try to see what's going on.....then it HAPPENS

★Gun Ho is a minor movie but eligible to be named the top 100 movies of all time in the world. ★This is such a splendid piece of work and maybe the best movie of Michael Keaton. ★At that time in Europe and America, the prejudice to Japan had been still filled. So, in this movie, portrait of the Japanese are very strange and very different from the real Japanese. ★But,recently, many people in the world respect and adore Japan and Japanese cultures. This is really ironical.

In fact, Americans were starting to have a lot of respect and admiration for the Japanese barely a dozen years after the end of World War II. We admired them for their industriousness, their work ethic, and the quality of their consumer goods (mainly cameras and electronics). I remember when EVERYONE had at least one of those little Sony pocket radios.

Keeping in mind the subject of the movie, the mentality and thoughts towards Japanese isn’t too far off for the timeframe in places like Detroit, etc. Foreign cars and workers, primarily Japanese ones, were looked down upon extremely and you’d rather walk than own a Japanese car. This movie shows the stereotypes that the typical American auto worker would have against japan/Japanese. And on the same hand, how Japanese perhaps perceived American auto workers. Stubborn, only thought about themselves and their own life, etc contrasted to diligent, company first and personal matters second, etc…it’s definitely a movie that’s spiced up a bit and exaggerated, but it definitely gets across the point that both sides can learn from one another to make their lives better and everyone wants the same things. Even at the end, Keaton and the other guy both have completely different views on what’s a successful product…then they reach an understanding with one another and learn from it

Two favourite memories from this film: the old guy saying 'buru shitto' and the young guy when asked about his cold wet underpants saying 'actually, I kind of rike it.' I have no idea why those stuck in my memory, but I still quote them in opportune moments. The movie hasn't aged well, probably, but I enjoy the memories of going to see it in high school with best friend and foreign exchange student, Hisako Goto. I wonder where she is now...

After working quite a few years for Japanese employers, this movie hits way too close to home for me. Legitimately abusive, soul-draining, tyrannical work culture, and often racist in a way which constantly breaks you mentally into thinking you’re nothing but a worthless barbarian who will never be as perfect as the Japanese Master Race. It’s no wonder the suicide rate in that country is so high. You couldn’t pay me enough to ever work for another Japanese company.

I will always love this movie. A bit outdated, prolly screams 'Racist!' for some, but I think there was just no other way of demonstrating the clash of cultures than by (over) dramatizing it. And the honesty is touching. I will be a coward and rally behind both powers. Heh. Maybe America can produce the first mass produced electric cars. Tesla is already doing it, but his clientele is way above the top of the food chain. For us middle and bottom feeders, we will also appreciate helping clean up the environment. It's too sad that Detroit IS dead.

In 2024, it has almost been 40 years since the movie came out. American is falling apart not excelling. Now in perspective the movie came out 40 years after Japan was obliterated in WW2. Japan is still thriving( 80+ years) in its culture and growing. American has turned into a unrecognizable shell from the release of the film. Drugs crime runaway illegal immigration, democrat ideology is still killing it to this day..( they were staunch union dems in movie) come back to this message in 40 years and see if we recovered. Carl Scruggs Fiats, namely Regatas and 147s. The interior shots of the plant were of a Fiat plant in Argentina. I don’t know if they just used those cars because the plant was available for filming, or if wanting to use a car that Americans would generally not be familiar with had anything to do with it. They didn’t even do much to turn them into “Assans”, those diagonal lines on the grill were already there. All they did was stick the Assan badge over them.
