This song is amazing! And I love this video so much. The British pilot is fighting for his love, the German is fighting for his faith, both are trapped in this war that isn't theirs. They realize they can't make it home and there is no victory to be had. Love is lost and faith is broken. All that is left is sadness that turns to hatred. It's such a sad and powerful message.
@@arimasu Nope, you can see that the one with the rosary it's the german pilot when he is shooting the british piilot and he left his gear touch the water to knock the german. The one firing in that scene is the german... and you can see his hand pulling the trigger holding the rosary at the same time.
The way it's edited it's kind of hard to tell but if you google what the stick looks like in a spitfire the rosary is definitely the German guy. The spitfire has that circular stick in it.
There's some yin yang thing going on there i think. I'm sure it was intentional, i think the metaphor is that a lot of relationships destroy themselves like this, you both fly so high and can go anywhere you want and yet you just pick fights with each other, pick some pointless hill to die on and end up bitter and filled with hatred. Given so many chances to turn things around and yet neither one did, they went willingly to their destruction
@@travisdrake660 And sometimes you should just part ways from each other when the dust settles and you both realise the way things are going, but many people still turn nasty due to the highly charged emotions involved. Great analogy, fits the video perfectly; the beautiful start (anything in this relationship is possible), the dog-fights (arguments) that moment of unspoken silence between you when you can't argue no more (both pilots flying alongside each other) . The bitterness at the end (the turn back attack). Yet despite it all, we'll keep falling in love... While I like the literal message that some people take away from it, I like this better. This is going to be my takeaway from it now too.
The reality of our cosmos is inherently dualistic. Love and hate are two poles of a matter which is of one essence. And like excessive hate, excessive love can be corrosive to the human spirit. So in a sense, having unrestrained hatred for another result in something quite similar to excessive love, the corrosion or loss of your soul.
@@Nolan15692 And that's what separates respect for your adversary from all out psychopathic rage. Be it in war, sports or even in e-sports. Respect, not hate.
I'm sure this has been said before, but looking at it, they both lost their humanity. just look for a sec....the German pilot lost his rosary (faith) and became a monster. The British pilot lost his love (the picture) and became a monster. All that was left was the cold showdown... no one wins
Reminded me of the hatred of racism fighting each other over no reason when we all come from each other and live on the same dam planet! ...Then it reminded me of hate an jealous between friends turned enemies. Sheesh what a human experience
4:08 I know its mean't be be showing the "War makes monsters of us all" Kinda thing but I still find the image of ramming another plane with your own while simultaneously jumping out to shoot at the pilot with your sidearm really badass.
True fact a us pilot in the Pacific bailed out of his burning plane and saw a Japanese pilot shooting at bailed out us pilots (to add to that shooting at them while they are parachuting and in the air is a war crime) he waited for the Japanese pilot to make a pass and shot at the pilot with his sidearm killing the Japanese pilot
@@intelligentgrawlix794 Sounds like a one in a billion shot.. Even if you aimed it perfect, there's no telling how that bullet would deflect/deform after hitting the glass. Would it even still have enough energy to kill someone unless all the stars in the universe aligned just right. Anyway, how was this "fact" verified? Who confirmed this story and how?
Two men who get turned into monsters by war and keep fighting until there is no humanity left in them. Dang thats sad but this song was really awesome!
I thought Paths of Hate was an amazing short film, but with this track alongside it, it's fucking insane. You guys are my new favorite band, that's for sure!
My best friend showed me this song about 4 years ago and I loved this song. Still do. Last Friday he killed himself and I dedicate this song to him. I love you bro. And miss you dearly.
It's a rare ocasion when the music matches the video, even if it takes multiple viewings to actually get it. Both music and the animation are legit pieces of art.
My wife went through some stiff shit a few years ago around Christmas. Nearly died. I pumped this track to the heavens everyday to and from the hospital. She made it out, and she's still the fire ant in my lungs.
Straight Chills from the video, also I just noticed this after my 3rd viewing. In the end after they blow away look at the snow... their spirits or souls or whatever is left continue to crawl towards each other!
In the original full length video the two shapes in the snow connect in the end, forming a red line. "closing the path between" The original video's name is "paths of hate"
For me, this song will always be about an unrequited love...gunship is what inspired me to start seriously pursuing music production after I lost my job. Everything they make is gold for me. Thank you gunship for the great music and inspiration you've given me.
That is awesome. Remember this, because it is a lesson as a muscian when you are maturing, even if you think there is no spark or hope... There is always going to be at LEAST one musician or band that will light the fire in your soul. I hope you have done well. Chase the dragon man! Music is about the last thing we have now. It is crucial.
Man, that scene where they are dancing in the dogfight, the planes move like graceful birds, but they are raining down massive amounts of bullets. The combination of beauty and horrific violence is simply amazing!
The BF109 vs the Spitfire is one of the most recognizable and deepest rivalries in history. These two planes were designed extremely well for their time and were good at a lot of different battle styles, but there's an art to the 1 on 1 dogfight between these two amazing machines.
I love the little detail at the end, after they've completely crumbled away and there's nothing left, even the very memory of them continues to trudge towards each other
@@unkulunkulu1494Thanks for that info. It really seemed like the animations were made for their music. They fit so absolutely perfect visually and lyrically. Genius decision to chose this video and cut it like that. And props to the original animators. It's a masterpiece.
Speaking of Hella emotional music videos wrong side of heaven by five finger death punch. That's one hard hitter on the emotional intensity scale in my humble opinion
Если бы старый добрый MTV был жив, и это бы показывали по ящику... ух, был бы хитяра на все времена. Жаль не все найдут этот шедевр в океане ютуба, слишком много разного контента и треша.
Glad people are finally catching onto this song and artists. I discovered them in the middle of a brutal heroin addiction following my second tour over seas. These music still reminds me of those dark times, but one of the few artists to come out of that with positive feelings. Magic.
@@cameroon95 nope, just a DJ - we had a small wedding with just our closest family and friends- about 60 people. Not sure how a live band would do it but itd probably have to be an electronic drum kit at least!
Call me a monster, crucify me upside down if you must, but I usually just download songs off RU-vid. It's so easy and I want my music. But every once in a while, I hear something so good that I buy every song by the band out of a sign of respect. This is one of those instances. I love you Gunship.
The way I see it, it's a visual representation of how easily it is to lose one's humanity to tread the path of hate. The video starts off as two pilots doing their duty and trying to shoot the other one down, they still retain their humanity by representing their faith (rosary) and love for another (picture of fiancee/wife). But as the fight drags on, they become obsessed with defeating one another, and become less and less concerned with what makes them human; they're probably thinking "I want you to lose, more than I want to live." But as soon as their ammo runs dry and their fuel runs low, they snap back to their humanity, and by protocol, disengage and return to base. After this scene, it gets a little more nuanced. The way the man's photo hits his face and flies away, or the rosary crumbling from the other's hand, could symbolize the humanity also flying/crumbling away. Another small detail is how the pilot refers to his map in his pocket may imply that he doesn't know where he is on the map, and may not know the way back; flying around trying to guess his way back may not be possible with his low fuel reserves. They're now left with a choice: to either try to regain their lost humanity by flying back, or cast it all aside and completely give in to hate. Their skin crumbles to represent the last of their humanity being lost, and being left with only a monster, immediately turn back to each other to kill one another. Their planes crash, they use their pistols, and then finally use their knives, but ultimately, perish before their desires are fulfilled; possible an allegory for how anger and hate is never satisfied. But that's just me.
A wonderfully astute articulation of this whole video, kudos! Seeing the Spitfire and BF109, two pinnacles of aerial combat in their times, tearing more and more wildly across the skies in a furious dogfight, it's almost an embrace of violence in its own twisted way; the only thing moments like this had left before culmination. And yes, the gradual loss of who they were; a soldier of faith and a soldier far from home... now lost to the vicious jaws of war, and by their own drives. War would be hell, if it weren't all too real.
A good idea for representation. As a side note, I read in another comment that the man with the map was actually seeing if he hand enough fuel to make it back to base, which he didn’t, as is referenced in the depressed way he lowered his eyes when after he checked. Which could also represent the idea that when you become obsessed with hatred, it may already be too late to regain your humanity.
Dude. Wow. Hands down the best comment about a song I have ever read. Your interpretation of this song and video is amazing!! And I totally agree and see it too this has totally changed how I feel about this song. In a good way of course. Just absolutely amazing this literally touched me soul I swear.
I never noticed this before, but at the end, after the pilots in their 'zombie' form turn to ash and get blown away, you can clearly see drags marks being made in the show. For both pilots. Seems that their ghosts were still fighting, even after their physical bodies were gone.
"You better fly for your life" Music project by Dan Haigh and Alex Westaway from 'Fightstar'. The video is an edited version of the short film 'Paths of Hate'. Watch it on the biggest screen you possibly can.
I've listened to this song at least twenty times now and each time it gets better. As a combat veteran, I understand the blood lust for my enemy. As a civilian, I understand the humanity side of things. It definitely is a balancing act.
We all somehow get lost in the red mist, some day, while lead is flying. The hardest thing is to regain sanity, after the fire ceased. Many cannot. My thoughts go to them, always.
@@thegermanfool8953 In times of peace or security they’re despised, in times of strife they’re the first people called to man the parapets. My respect for soldiers of any stripes is absolute. I may not agree with their cause and I may despise them personally. However I respect any man who’ll willingly run the risk of coming home in a box for ideology, country, family, future, faith or whatever other reason. I can’t imagine anything worse than the feeling of knowing your never coming home and seeing family again. The best way I can describe it is absolute numbness. The feeling overwhelms you to the point where your brain just shuts off because it can’t take the fear, anger and crushing despair. It only gets worse if you survive. Once you can feel again all of the suppressed emotion just hits you like a truck and it doesn’t just happen once, it can happen over and over again for years. You can truly go insane from it. It’ll turn the toughest, most iron willed son of a bitch into a sobbing, screaming wreck. To not only endure agonizing training, but face that mind shattering, all consuming darkness willingly takes a level of bravery beyond the comprehension of many. Also that’s completely ignoring the hate and rage that can build in up in someone too. That’s a whole other animal.
I can't describe exactly how much this song means to me. This was the song I had most recently discovered when I was going through quite possibly the most important part of my life. It sends shivers down my spine, and brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. The music video too is such a powerful, emotional story. Thank you, Gunship. We'll keep falling in love.

One of the best thing is when, they start turning to monster and when both of them transforms completely ...you think like how can this guys be so creative. Great work !
My brother sends this to me in a crucial part of my life and it's almost like a modern version of Aces high by Iron maiden and right when I watched it....a bunch of shit just connected in the right ways and I just feel lucky.... Even though this is one of the toughest roughest times in my life, this song made its way to me when I needed it most. And it rocks🤘 and the visuals are perfect I love it. Thank you!
I have loved this song for a long time but never saw the video. I am blown away. I think my favorite detail is when they both realize they won't make it back, their humanity cracks and reveals a monster that will stop at nothing to destroy the other. Even at the end when they fade away completely the tracks in the sand continue, like there is nothing left of the men they were.
This is probably one of the most painful videos to watch my grandaddy didn't like hurting people and to see the Anger in one's eyes hurts more then the pain he or she inflicts we are all one I just wish the rest could see

+Alice G. Yup, Gunship is retrowave / synthwave / REDM music and very 80s, all the way down to the Cannon Films homage in Gunship's logo. He's one of the more talented artists in that music scene, but there's many others: Lazer Hawk, Miami Nights, Tommy '86, Lifelike, etc. Everything about that scene is kickass, from the music to the artwork to the videos.
I have watched this over & over , it’s epic . I think it’s a great homage to those fighter pilots of the past who engaged in this kind of battle . I’m wondering if the people behind this animation are history buffs of WW2 because this is a labor of love . I see this video has inspired may thoughtful comments which I enjoyed reading .. the pathos to this short video has affected not a few people here. The song & video are perfect for each other , thank you & bravo to all the creators !
I think the thing I love most about this is something I just noticed. Even after they've turned to Ash and been scattered by the wind, the outline of their bodies are still crawling forward in the snow, still trying to end everything, to kill the other. Goes to show that a hatred that strong, that overwhelming and all encompassing, even after your death will carry on in some way. Will have repercussions. Whether it's family, friends, organizations...hate that strong doesn't end with just the person carrying it and the torch is passed.
In the original full length video the two shapes in the snow connect in the end, forming a red line. "closing the path between" The original video's name is "paths of hate"
My ole man emulates these men. While the song brings back early 80's memories of carefree days and blissful nights, the monster within him has blossomed from a career of fighting wars in other countries. After retirement, his demons were pushed deep but still lingered. He longs for his fallen brothers on the battlefield. But even more, wants to return to those arenas where he feels most in control. The only thing preventing him is his broken body and newfound love of family. But I know he won't rest easy until either those demons are exercised or excised. And I keep falling in love with him every day.
