I played with Gunstar Red and through Normal difficulty.
Gunstar Heroes was my favorite Run n' Gun video game developed by Treasure (who used to be former Konami employees). It came out as a SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive game soon after Treasure was established at the time. It went pretty well, and critics loved it, so there was a big chance this game would get a sequel, and it did.
Gunstar Super Heroes then showed up and was released as a GameBoy Advance game that was also made by Treasure themselves. However, this game was supposedly a "sequel", but it felt more like a remake since there are just too many remixes and re-references from the original Genesis/Mega Drive game. The throwing mechanic and weapon combinations were removed as well (you now have 3 weapon slots instead of 2), but were replaced by mele attacks, knife attack, and a super weapon meter, which I'll give credit for that because it's better than not having anything at all. Some parts of the game felt a bit awkward, considering that nearly the entire story is just pretty much the same from the original, hence why it felt more like a remake than a "sequel". A couple of things WERE changed or new from the original such as the helicopter top-down shooter, Orange now uses a flying jet, Red's gender has changed from male to female, the final boss battles were different, etc. If you played both Gunstar Heroes games, you'll see what I'm saying.
Despite these minor flaws, I still loved this game. I can still see some potential here and it just sucks that this game didn't sell very well, especially since it is so MUCH fun to play.
And in this video, I fought with my most favorite boss in the game, and it's Green. And yes, that was his name. Green used to be a former member of the Gunstar Team but then the manipulative empire, who was trying to reawaken the God of Ruin or Golden Silver using the treasure gems, brainwashed Green and the Gunstars (Or Red as displayed in this video) has to bring their brother Green back.
Green also has his very flexible machine that can transform into 7 different forms (also known as the Seven Force). On Easy and Normal difficulties, you only get to fight 5 of its forces, while in Hard mode, you get to fight all 7. And in this video, I played through Normal difficulty.
If you are a retro gamer yourself as much as I am, I highly recommend you to play this game yourselves. It's so much fun to play, and unlike the original game, you get to strategize here better, and it feels amazing.
