Three years ago Gurkha veterans and their families won the right to settle in the UK. Aldershot MP Gerald Howarth caused controversy last week, when he said the settled Gurkha community should be more dispersed. Around 9,000 are now living in the Aldershot area, which local people say is putting a strain on services.

at least the Nepalese are willing to contribute to our country, fight for our country, integrate into our country, coexist peacefully in our country, I take 1 million Nepalese any day over supposed "asylum seekers" who wish to bring harm to this country, change demographic for the worse and have no intention of integrating into Britain and least of all abide by our country's rules but demamd we have to bend over for them and change our rules to suit them, nepali I salute you and I pray for your well being

If this video is any indication the English people have been very welcoming of the Nepalese people. That is nice to see. Of course they tend to congregate in the same communities. That is only natural for immigrants.

I think it's a crying shame that the governments over the years tried to block their settlement. If you have served with honour in the British military for x amount of years, anyone should be able to get residency. Usually after 5 years you can apply for ILR/settled status in the UK, so I think 5 years of a non-Brit in the military should be entitled to get ILR after that.

I understand the psychology behind this to some extent and I'm sure there are intelligent people amongst us who also know it well and can make a difference. It isn't too late yet to work on it so that we can have a better integrated society which will have nothing but good outcomes to offer.

He's hardly a Nazi. He's old enough to see the image and culture of the town change since he was a child. Unlike other towns whose changes are faceless such as a loss of jobs, antisocial behaviour and changes in technology the changes this man is experiencing has a face. It's just tribalism, I'm sure a fair few Nepalese people wouldn't be thrilled if 2000 English people settled in their town.

@@BingleFlimp I am a Nepali here and I can sympathize with what he's saying. He doesn't seem to have animosity towards nepalese, he just means to say the changes in his locality have been drastic. My fellow Asians, living in the UK. I share your experience after growing up and living in Vancouver Canada. My mom (Canadian born) and dad (born in British Malaysia) fought the Imperial Japanese Army in WW2. I am born in Calcutta, British India (prior to Indian Partition in 1947. I am a Naturalized Chinese Canadian. Under Confederation, Sir John A McDonald, Canada's Prime Minister worked to unite Canada by building the CN Railway and later the CP Railway. Some of the Chinese, from building the railways in the USA, came up from San Francisco, Portland and Seattle to work the Canadian railroads. They were dispised and unwelcomed with political rules like the Chinese Exclusion Act and the head tax on Chinese children born in Canada. I know, because that affected my mother's family. Why? Because we spoke Cantonese at home, English in the community. Meaning that culturally, we found security in association when society excluded us. To this day, 2021, Chinese Canadians are almost equal in voice in government.

I don't disagree with the MP about the Gurkhas being a little more spreadout though. I live in Reading, and we have a lot of Nepalese here, and places like Reading can absorb large amounts of Nepalese. It's not fair on smaller towns to absorb so many people in a short period of time.

For those of you who don't understand the situation, Nepal is not a Commonwealth country. Nepal is a private Kingdom. The arrangement is between the British crown and the Nepali crown. We effectively borrow their soldiers. The money goes to their King. This private arrangement started 200 years ago etc. When a Gurkha swears an oath to crown, he is effectively swearing an oath his king. Royalty is the same all over the world. Now off course because the legislation has changed the Gurkhas and their families can settle here and become full British citizens due to their length of service in the British forces..

"Every person in the UK should be absolutely ashamed of themselves." Why?,It was British veterans who along with Joanna Lumley put pressure on our Government to give the right for Gurkhas and their families to reside here. The people were Incensed that the Government seemed okay with letting every man and his dog( A lot of them with nothing to offer but hatred in their hearts for us) in the Country but not Gurkhas. Learn from NI where they insist on rc schools and housing from public purse. Intergration and ways to achieve that must happen. Nepalese are best of non British ppl in our country.. Only thing I didn't like was language on bus routes a changing to any language other than this country but still it's not like Irish republics have done to dominate others or enforce their language.more out of neccessity than anything for customer base. Nepal went through a civil war. Whilst serving Ghurkas in the British army were fighting for us all over the world. They didn't know the fate of their families. Whilst battalions of Ghurkas were fighting for us in Afghanistan, in their homeland next door their families went through a devastating earthquake. I still feel shame that the UK reserve army wasn't immediatelysent to Nepal to help humanitarian efforts. After what we asked of them, they have a right to ask for anything. They asked that their families could live in peace and have a better life. They love Nepal and the UK. So where should we send them?
