Padmasambhava was NOT a popular man during his lifetime in Tibet because he wanted nothing to do with the religious establishment and its pernicious politics & absurd dogmas! This depiction is entirely false, sorry to say. Not only was he dressed simply like a wandering ranger, he preferred to live in remote areas away from other humans & only occasionally interacted with people & then only when necessary. He was usually in the company of at least one female student of tantra.
