They are supposed to perform a tackle that is within the rules and won't injure other players. Players used to know how to grass an attacking player by wrapping arms at the waist and sliding to the knees and then the ankles. Coaches removed that tackle from the game as it led to a quick play the ball. Gus is cooked.

Spot on. Here’s an idea: Any completed one-on-one low tackle is deemed ‘dominant’ and slows the play the ball and allows defence to reset. Remember the ‘dominant tackle’ a few years back; rewarded exactly the wrong things and here we are. Gus is right, identify the type of tackle wanted and reward it. There’d be an outbreak of low chopping tackles tomorrow if there was an advantage.

Then maybe Ezra Mam and Payne Haas should learn to tackle in a way that is within the rules and doesn't break the opponents legs? I was looking forward to seeing Eels full strength but can't because of Bronco's breaking the rules. And RCG was also looking forward to being able to walk normally but can't anymore.
@muzzan1448
@muzzan1448 Год назад
@@Johhny_B Why limit your comment to just Mam and Haas? Maybe Hopgood should as well. They aren't the only ones that have been reported for this tackle. A tackle that has been around this game for many years, just not referred to as a hip drop. A tackle that players don't train to do. They are just trying everything in their power to stop the player, within the rules of the game. With the speed of the game now, this sort of tackle is now causing issues. No one wants to see another player get hurt, but then accidents also do happen. The intent of this tackle is to stop the player rather than hurt/injure the player, but unfortunately it is causing a few injuries. The Haas tackle wasn't your "standard" hip drop tackle either, RCG was already on his knees and the way he was going down in someone way contributed to the way Hass fell. I'd suggest if Haas had let go of RCG's shoulders he'd still have landed on RCG's legs contributing to his injury the way RCG's legs were spread at the time. Which was, I would suggest mostly due to the state of the field at the time after rain, hence slippery. I think the NRL has got only itself to blame with wanting the game to be so much faster and limiting what the defence can/can't do. On a completely different issue in the NRL, I've always found it weird that the defense get penalised to "attacking" the head and rightly so, but the attack can be the aggressor and not get penalised.

@markbowman2890
@markbowman2890 Год назад
Simple answer is to make the genuine, one on one, leg tackle a legitimate way to be rewarded. This can be done by making the leg tackle equal to a dominant tackle, allowing enough time for the tackler to get in position as marker. The leg tackle is a relatively safe tackle when done correctly.
@grantmcphail9042

Gus is right If a player tackles between the hips and knees the way a player is always taught to tackle, then these days you are breaking the rules So Gus is right in saying the nrl bosses come out to every club and show them how they want a player to tackle simple
@shanedennis4675
@shanedennis4675 Год назад
this all started when they started the surrender vs attacking tackle release rules, a tackle is a tackle. Is Gus part of Rugby League or some whining commentator double dipping on high paid club and media gigs? Any casual observer can see modern wrestle techniques have caused the hip drop. The tackler grabs the attacker from behind or the side and then twists the ball carrier using their own weight with gravity pulling them across the lower half of the attackers body. Gus’s other problem is he played in the blood and guts era so sees injury including serious head knocks as just part and parcel of the game. Would love to see him chatting with the Bulldogs management crew about risk mitigation, employee insurance, etc. He can’t just brush this stuff with his duty of care in the modern era

The game has become way to officiated which results in players taking the safest option for a tackle which is the Hip Drop tackle, the reason they don't do it in training is because they don't have Fwit refs pulling them up every 2 seconds for literally nothing so they can go for a tackle that would otherwise be pulled up in an actual game. Like Paul said, they'll never go back on what they've said so they'll just make another rule that creates another problem in the future.

Gus mentioned about low tackles a couple weeks ago. If you tackle low around the legs and put them on the ground quick, they get up and play the ball before you get set at marker and then your a man down for a defense thanks to your good tackle. So now no team tries to go low and the wrestle took hold. A way to fix this is to REWARD low tackles and allow the tackler to climb around the ball carrier back to marker. But no. That slows the game down and makes it not exciting anymore...

It's the classic case of scope creep. The original hip drop was to stop the blatant tackling of an attacker by a third man that bore all their weight on the attackers legs. Now, it's turned into anything that comes anywhere near the attacker's legs is a hip drop. I think the NRL should go full pelt, and ban every player on every "hip drop" in a game. They will quickly realise that not defining a tackle SPECIFICALLY, will mean teams wouldn't be able to field a team. As it sits, it seems that it you tackle a person from anywhere (even when you're trying to recover), other than front on, and use gravity (aka your and the attackers weight) to get them to the ground and prevent an offload, then it can be deemed a hip drop. There's already been sin-bins for defenders that didn't even land on the attackers legs. Seems like we're getting closer and closer to touch football.

I said this on another video last week and I'll say it again. The problem is that the NRL is trying to punish every instance of a player getting hurt in a heavy contact sport with athletes who are faster and stronger than the average Joe. Look at every instance they called a "hip drop" in that Broncos vs Parramatta game and other games. The refs are seeing the tackles and no one is seeing a problem in it because they aren't actual hip drops. It's only after the bunker gets into their ear that it's being punished and I'm not blaming the bunker here. They're obviously under instruction from the people above them to come down on it so they don't get their own asses chewed out

You can't but can solve it. It's a contact sport they've been around since the game started. Once the attacking player gets in front of the defender the defender panics so uses his own body weight to bring the attacker down. It's basic psychology. If we suspend every hip drop style tackle there will be no teams playing at all. As much as I hate this idea I think it's a good compromise. Apply the HIA rule to hip drops. If there is a hip drop and a player buckles the ref stops the clock and applies a rough 30 second count. If the player stays on the ground then he must leave the field for the minimum HIA 10 minute assessment. From the attacking player aspect: * this will eliminate the acting floppers waiting for the video ref to find a penalty and a sin bin (then getting up and playing the ball) * if a player needs to go off for a minimum of 10 minutes but can come back on and play then only apply a tier 1 fine on the offending hip dropper * if a player goes off and can't return because of injury but is able to play next round then a tier 2 fine is applied to the offending hip dropper * if a player goes off and can't return to the game but also can't return the next round and beyond because the injury is so great - apply a tier 3 fine to the attacking hip dropper A comprise will stop attacking players staying to milk a penalty and a sin bin (then getting up to play the ball) A fine system will make defenders do their best to tackle in a different way While a comprise between the level of injury and fine applied allows lee-way

I thought a hip drop involved multiple tacklers? Those cannonball tackles were a disgrace and should have been banned. Now they're penalizing one man tackles around the waist.

I think the two teams should meet in the middle. Then flip a coin. Who ever wins the toss, Wins. Nobody can get hurt apart from tearing a thumb tendon. Then the crowd can all join hands & sing Kumbaya.

Slow the game down . Stop making the game touch football. As soon as you slow the game down all this crap goes away. Who the F wants to see scores of 40-30 anyway.??!! The best games are the ones that finish 12-10

Abdo & his mates are slowly turning the game of rugby league into a game of tag. Listening to ex players like Freddy & John's carry on about how bad the hip drop is & it has to be out of the game, just shows what a bunch of hypocrites they are.

Shouldn’t be called the bunker should be called the bonkers . Cause there that dumb the refs absolute disaster ruining the game . Have a bunker and the Storm vs Warriors shows they still can’t get it right and cherry pick what they want to pull up. They really need to be investigated on why they choose certain teams to favour

When I played we only needed two players to tackle , all there teaching players to do is wrestle , allthough I am not a fan of Queensland sides , I always admired Bret Tate , he always tackled around the legs , they came down , all the NRL has to do is a good leg tackle such as Tate preformed , should be rewarded , in so far as the tackler has the right to mark the play in the ball

It would be better if Gus just resign from Channel Nine commentating and apply for a job at the NRL to help fix some of these issues his stressing about.
