From writing history at the Ironman World Championships to considering life without triathlon, Gustav finds purpose and peace with the challenges that life has thrown his way.
We sat down with Gustav as he shared the harsh reality of the past 24 months, and the light at the end of the tunnel leading up to his return to competition.

Dear Gustav, my wife passed with cancer after 5 and half years and it has inspired me to live a different purpose I know you will be back even stronger in all ways. Thank you for this video and wish you well in Kona. I hope to reach Kona in 2 years.

I'm an 8 time sprint triathlon and duathlon champion here in Florida. Our mom's died 2 months apart. Same circumstances. It sucks. It's a serious gut punch. I miss her badly like you miss yours. It is difficult finding that wind in the sails again. There is still that pain that will always be there, but as time goes by, it will get better. Just hold on, stay busy and remember that the sunshine shines on our mom's through us now. Best to you Gustav.

Amazing video Gustav. It felt familiar, having lost my dad to Alzheimers, the pain never goes away. After your Kona win, I was inspired. However in June 2023 I broke my leg, metatarsals and shoulder in a motorcycle accident, and couldn't walk for 3 months. A year later I'm training for an Olympic distance. Please keep making more content so that we can continue to be inspired by your commitment, passion, and love for your family, life and the sport. ❤

Dear Gustav, thank you for being vulnerable with us and sharing the pain you have been through. I lost my father a couple of months ago and like you I wish I could have continued to share my life with him here. I am an amateur age grouper and I'm grateful that my Dad spectated my first IRONMAN a couple of years ago. You're an inspiration to all of us Gustav for your titles but also for the person you are. wow, made my cry and think of my grandmother who passed away 7 years ago. one of my most fond memories is her watching me race my first olympic distance. just for fun, but she was there at the sideline. already sick of cancer, and died a year later. This week I started training again for a half distance in august. thanks for being so honest and pure gustav. I just came to realize again why I do it and who motivates me the most. Hope you'll be back on top soon and very sorry for your loss.
