For four or five decades Mahler's Symphony No. 1 has been one of my top ten symphonies of all time. With this stupendous, monumental performance by Yannick Nézet-Séguin & Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra it moves up to the top spot in my list. This performance is the best classical music performance that I have ever seen on RU-vid or anywhere else. Capture the video if you possibly can or bookmark it on your browser as I have done. You will not regret being able to see it over and over again. I cannot understand how anyone can give this performance a thumbs down yet some have. Jose Sanchez

Thank you. It's such a treat to see Yannick's face while conducting. As a Philadelphian, who has enjoyed Yannick conducting our beloved orchestra, I always wished to see what the musicians see while he conducts. I admire him even more now! What a great talent. So many great musicians. How fortunate to be able to collaborate to make beautiful music.

No disrespect to Lorin Maazel but it was Eugen Jochum who did a wonderful job as the orchestra’s first chief conductor and recently Maris Jansons who raised their profile to one of the top orchestras of the World.

Beautiful performance!! As a horn player, to help the horn section to project more at the end, instead of a trumpet and trombone (playing obbligato parts written by Mahler) let's try having three of the horn players switch to the Wagner tuba (horn on steroids). Tow on the upper octave and one on the lower. This might do the trick and keep it pure 'horn'. Regardless, this is an incredible performance!! Kudos to all!!!!

Yannick is the best and his Mahler 1 is the best ever. I heard him with Rotterdam in Cologne. It was during that performance that I became a SUPERFAN of Yannick s and Mahler. If you listen carefully to multiple recordings of Mahler 1, none compare to those that he has conducted. There are so many nuances that he brings out of the musicians. I think even Mahler would have been amazed that a conductor could elevate his masterpieces to an even higher level. BRAVO YANNICK!

@@porterbrass First of all, I don't think there's a single recording that's "the best". I don't believe in such things, especially in the case of Mahler 1, which is probably the Mahler symphony that has received the most excellent recordings. There's truly a myriad of great Mahler 1s, and Nézet-Séguin is just ONE of them. Among my personal favorites, I can mention Ozawa, Honeck, Gielen, Kubelik, Levine, Boulez, Solti, Jansons, Bychkov... And probably many others that I can't remember at the moment.

Nonsense. Mahler puts lots of directions in the score. You can see Yannick knows the work. You can say a singer is too young for repertoire sometimes but there is no particular reason that Yannick would be too young in his 30s tp play a work composed by a man in his thirties
