Magnificent playing by an inspired orchestra.. AND... EXCELLENT camera work from so many different angles and positions by an incredibly talented camera crew and director from BBC! ALSO, what a handsome string bass section! Awesome!

7:30 Best part of the whole symphony. It's climactic and exciting, but horribly tragic at the same time.

This work is properly directed only by Klemperer and eventually Walter while the best performance of the ninth is Walter Vienna 1938 though a bit on the fast side

I think best performance of the 9th is Abaddo 2014 or thereabouts. He held the audience for like 5 minutes in total silence at the end.

Hearing this after Berios Sinfonia makes me feel like there is something important missing.. a lot of clusters, citations and Samuel Beckett :) But it is still a great work in its own way

Onionman, I had the same reaction. I had a 20th-cent music prof who had us listen and listen to the Berio take on it, so when I finally got to the Mahler work, it seemed bare. Now I don't see it that way, of course. And Clive Goodman, I too like the song version! Music is ceaselessly inventive and moving.

I have just heard the song version of this, St Anthony's sermon to the fishes, and I prefer the song version, particularly because I believe that this is played too quickly.
@frankjuggaloheathen1035

I haven't heard the song version, but keep in mind this movement is a scherzo; it's supposed to be rapid.
@clivegoodman16
@clivegoodman16 4 года назад
@@frankjuggaloheathen1035 . I understand that "scherzo" is Italian for joke. I think that it is funnier if it is played a little more slowly.

@@clivegoodman16 that's not the term for what it means in the classical music sense of things. Scherzo in that sense means lively, rapid, and not holding back.
