In an intense bare-knuckle bout at BYB25, Gustavo "The Cuban Assassin" Trujillo marked his triumphant return to the squared circle, securing a first-round knockout victory against Brazil's Levi 'Pitbull' Costa. Speaking with Bare Knuckle News, Gustavo shared his journey back into bare-knuckle fighting and his passion for the sport: "I feel very grateful to BYB for giving me the opportunity to be here and restart my career in bare-knuckle fighting. I'm excited and happy to feel that crowd again that supports me so much. I think I was born for this."
He felt comfortable in his BYB debut right off the bat and was able to adapt quickly to the tighter spaces in the Mighty Trigon: "What happens in the trigon is that you can't move much because you are against the ropes. But as long as you keep the opponent closer to the ropes, you will have great opportunities to step back a little and connect with the counterpunch. And that's what happened in the fight."
Trujillo is widely recognized as one of the top pound-for-pound bare-knuckle fighters in the world. Now that he has won the heavyweight title eliminator, he will get his chance to win BYB gold by challenging 'Hurricane' Ike Villanueva on July 13 in New Orleans:
"Everyone who has fought me knows who I am. And the question is simple: Why didn't they give me Lorenzo Hunt for the rematch? Because they know that the only undisputed champion in bare-knuckle is called Gustavo Trujillo, The Cuban Assassin. Now we will go for the title against Ike Villanueva. I think we'll have a great fight. I already told him to prepare well. I am also going to prepare well. So the two of us are ready to give the audience a show. He knows I have power, I know he has power. I have already studied him, I have studied enough of his past fights. I'm going to give the best of me and I'm going to take that belt."
Gustavo emphasized the importance of mentality and resilience as his greatest strength as a fighter: "My mentality never betrays me. I tend to stay calm when there is great danger. You can train well and have a great training camp, but when the cameras, lights, and crowds are there, if you don't have the mentality for these big events, you won't go anywhere."
Beyond the ring, Trujillo reflected on representing his homeland, which is very dear to his heart: "I always represent Cuba, my Cubans, those inside the island suffering under a dictatorship that has lasted over 60 years. I represent those enduring it, who want the dictatorship to end, and the political prisoners fighting day by day."
