Guthrie blows my mind with his note selection and his technique. He's one of the many examples of a player who can shred with soul. He's the greatest guitarist alive. Possibly of all time. Certainly my favorite.
He is incredible thats true. In my humble opinion i think jakub zytecki comes really close to rival him phrasing and creativity, especially because of his latest albums and live music. Definitely check him out
Jorn Vallis you are so right my friend!!!! Guthrie Govan rules the guitar world with only a handful of guitarist that can even carry his guitar's case, let alone his guitar! His only real challenge is getting his hair to co-operate on high humidity days! His skills are unmatched on guitar!
Attempting to learn this right now and here's the things I find amazing It's improvised...what? The hardest part about it isn't necessarily the speed and technique but the rhythm and time feel. Very hard to replicate. Some of the lines are pure bebop @00.21 for example. You can really see that jazz influence come out (I guess Larry Carlton did that too so he's channeling him) I love how he hits the chord tones so naturally. @00.15 is such a perfect example of a motif repeating but just changing that one note from C to B to highlight the G7 chord He was clearly thinking ahead a remembering a phrase from the last chorus and going back to develop it. The speed of thinking is incredible. At the end of the first chorus he anticipates the start of the next and starts his phrase on the 4 of the last bar. Most players might take a break there but that flow is crazy.
What i find amazing here is that Guthrie does not play licks, scales, arpeggios or anything with a name or tecnique. He simply mimics the backing track with a continued flow of ideas and sentences. And this is why i don't think it's a good idea to try and learn this note by note. It's not about licks, it's about musical awareness, feel, rhythm, note changes, interval knowledge and much more. Instead of learning this to play this exact track, maybe it's better to take some ideas and slowly incorporate them into your own style. Cause that's what Guthrie himself did his hole life, until he actually developed his own style.
This video was an absolute treat for my ears, and a total surprise. Larry Carlton has been a huge influence on my playing for almost 40 years. I never would have imagined a young guy like Guthrie would know much about his amazing past. Great to see a young axe-kicker doling out those amazing Carlton riffs. You go, Professor Guitar Bro!
can't believe I spent about 4 days picking apart the original video and learning it by ear then after all that I stumble across this gem of a video.....oh well. Wonderful video though bud, great job on the tab.
Thank you Jordan, the transcription and tab animation was made by me. This wise guy Anthony Stainback just ripped the transcription from my channel. This is the legit channel man: ru-vid.com/show-UCLI47DkH1VXtfdQpiGmSOkQ
How much do we love Guthrie eh ,? Sassy ,slick ,melodic, blistering moments of speed all wrapped up in amazing ,fluidity !,, as his star rises so does his personal confidence which means if it's even humanly possible we still haven't seen the best of him,,a lovely humble guy and my favourite player by far, peace out.
Not all heroes wear capes. Thank you for this sir. You have earned yourself a sub :) also, Guthrie is one of the best guitarists alive today. So glad he made this Jam
Ok..I downloaded this a while back as a Larry Carlton track....I was thinking wow...I never knew he could play like this...lol Larry is great but this is just smoking. very tasty Guthrie.
Yea Guthrie smokes. But just in case you didn't hear Carlton play this one. You'll see he can smoke too! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bMUz6iLLgEY.html
I have been in love with this track for a long time now! But, I must say, somehow the slower version sounded so much better! The same notes felt even tastier when slower. Thanks for this awesome upload, Anthony!

WOW, so Tasty! I am going to Learn this WHOLE thing and teal it and play it at the GC, and everyone will thinkI am a M.G. (Musical Genius), and nobody will know, but ME and 55,605 people. I am a self taught play by ear, no music theory shredder that like tasty playing MORE now, and LOVE Andy Timmons, who lives near me. Seen him 20 times live, Guthrie is amazing!
This is basically a 16 bar minor jazz blues with a funky groove - The I and IV chords are C min9 and F min9 (both first inversions/minor 3rd in the bass). As with all minor blues, the natural minor scale/aeolian mode is a good choice because C aeolian and F dorian have EXACTLY the same notes. This makes it very convenient for somebody to play the C and F chords by playing the same scale and emphasising different notes - e.g the 5th and flat 6th of C Aeolian are also the 2nd and flat 3rd of F Dorian. The turnaround is interesting A maj7 to G min7 - in chord scale terms, these are the flat 6th and 5th respectively of C aeolian, so really as with so much modal jazz and the fusion music derived from it, all FOUR chords are taken directly from the C aeolian chord scale. The main scale for this track would therefore be C aeolian or C natural minor as it's more generally known as...
@@LOLAP95 Well good for you. Doesn't change the fact there are guitarists in their beginning stages of improvising that would benefit from this information...as you can see by the 12 likes this comment has received.
Right after the big bend on the 11th fret b string, he jumps up a note and is like hmmm not that one and jumps up another in a matter of like 0.3 seconds.
what software do you use to slow down video? I only have software that slows down and loops music (free "best practice") but what about video? Not just windows media player I hope
Guthrie, I was enjoying to ear you, it's so great. I'm going to download tab. will it be possible to get the backing track ? thank you so much. Regards
