Guthrie’s secret: instead of wasting time eating, use that time to practice too. You’ll be super skinny but also super sick on the guitar. This guy is a treasure!
Vai has always been my favorite but you can't deny, Guthrie may be the all around best player out there. He plays every style flawlessly. He's incredible and has tremendous soul and feeling in his very sophisticated playing.
One of the things I really love about him is that when he's playing full songs (either in fusion music or when backing pop/rock players like Steven Wilson or Asia), he's enormously tasteful and emotional in his note choice. Bends, starts and stops of notes - all of the playing tends to be really melodic and only occasionally super fast. It's a different art when playings songs vs. doing a clinic like this. He's a genuine master.
Not a big fan of this guy, but I'm seeing a lot of hate about his playing which is bull shit. This is someone who has put the time and effort into making this instrument effortless for him to use. When people say he can't play thus style he can't play that, you're wrong. He is a master guitarist and probably musician in general and with a little bit of practice can put his style and skill and sound into any genre and make it sound phenomenal. Guitarist of this caliber have a different understanding of guitar. I'm not saying he's the greatest ever or his skill is unparalleled but this guy is with out a doubt a master of guitar.
Not a big fan either... he is definitely an excellent guitarist technically, no one can doubt that! He can play everything! But he is not a rock star! Marty Friedman is... Paul Gilbert as well... Malmsteen surely is!!!... and others!
Just another video with most of the comment section claiming people are hating on someone when every comment is actually people complaining about the hate...
This guy really can play EVERYTHING! Sooooooo gooood! And he’s got sooo much soul and groove besides being probably the best technical guitarist of all! Awesome!
I'm not a guitarist but I've been playing drums for 18 years and this guy is without a doubt one of the best I've ever seen.. His work with Steven Wilson is sublime!! If you don't think he has feel or soul listen to the solo on ancestral and regret #9
I used to go watch Guthrie with his brother with 'The Fellowship' nearly every Thursday at the Bassment in Chelmsford. Must be 10 - 15 years ago now. They played roughly the same set almost every week. On a weekly basis, I was amazed how he would play something completely different, for nearly every tune, across all styles. Sometimes at break neck speed and another time with the feel of someone like Larry Carlton (for example). Sometimes I'd walk out of there ready to stick my gear on ebay at the weekend. The reality was, that he inspired me to go home and practice more! The guy is a British guitar phenomenon, who has left his mark on the guitar playing world. Much respect.
This "Guthrie has no soul" stuff is puzzling. What criteria are you using? Because in this 3-minute clip he's not playing the bluesy bends, a la BB King or Gary Moore? Guthrie is amazing. Most players wish they were half this good.
Unlike all those guys with "soul" guitar is his soul. People just can't appreciate that he is so much more talented than all of those "gods." I have yet to find a style he isn't just absolutely ridiculous at. And satan would have never had enough talent sitting around to give him all of this, lol. Guthrie is king. Also I wish I knew someone 5% this good......
Worse off, he's said things similar to what people are criticizing him of. He has said in interviews multiple times that he values shredding AND musicality, and if you listen to his songs you can see he's clearly aware of what he's doing.
hes not a blues player for sure, his srv/hendrix style was terrible. and although i love his country licks hes no scotty anderson. he is a good player but not the best but no one is. he is way better than me for sure but that doesnt take much:)
Forget it and remember to fell Happy . Thats Its all what matters ten years from now we have a new super hero! Should i sell my gear because some are better . No way! It makes me happy. I had an accident in 2007 and were paralysis for 8 years. So back to scratch and I use master card as plectrum, but how lucky I can play pretty good. Yes if this hasn’t happened I would surely have been better but. I’m alive, I evolved a new approach to my guitars. So be happy because we have way to much to worried about! Music is an international language! And Gurthie sends a lot of good vibes to us. Thank you and continue because this so relaxing a virtuoso which both legs on the ground
Once you reach the height of a skill set, you get bashed for being too good. Just goes to show that Emerson’s philosophy is true. Whatever you gain, you will lose something.
We have a bunch of ignorant people shitting on our lord Petrucci saying he has no "feel", he plays like a robot or that he sucks. The world is a hilarious place.
Bullshit. Guthrie is polarizing. And that‘s for a reason. To me he lacks „feel“ a lot. And to argue about that is super pointless. If i listen to Shawn Lane though I don‘t get that feeling. And he was technically even crazier.
Even if you don't like his artistic choices, he is a master of the instrument. He also wrote my favorite guitar books. Creative Guitar 1 and 2. If you are looking for ideas on how to improve at guitar, those books are incredibly comprehensive and thoughtful.
It's funny how you can watch these amazing guitar players and think, "Wow, this guy's the best!...no, wait that guy's even better!...but wait, this other guy is incredible!...but, etc." The truth is they're all amazing...just enjoy them all and the best one is the one that brings out the most emotion.
Hear him playing "Cannonball Rag" by Merle Travis and Little Wing by Hendrix.... This guy is the future of Guitar virtouso's..... Very very talented.... Also check out "Tommy Emanlnuel or Roy Clark and Jerry Reed playing "Jerry's breakdown"...
To the curious ones,or the ones who want to judge... Jtc guitar=>RU-vid channel Playlist of 75 videos of him improvising over different backings. In the playlists, search his name. Watch any...
Obviously incredibly talented. I’m not as taken with his playing as so many but this isn’t to take anything away from the guy. I’ll never be in his ballpark.
I first came across him ...[ gulp ]... in 1995 - he did a regular spot in Guitar Techniques magazine - I can still remember his breakdown of 'PIck Up The Pieces' - Average White Band. He transcribed all the horn parts as well . I recall thinking he was stoned because of his equable prosody. I didn't have any idea how good he was until years later . Envy/jealousy must be the only reason to put any opprobrium his way. He's a veritable virtuoso and a great ambassador for the axe ! Rick Beato has just done a good vid about him , worth a watch (had to laugh at the chicken-pickin' bit).
