@Socioistic I think it is because they learn solos from a tab of a favorite song but have no idea how to jam within the key they are actually playing in. That is why it is so important to learn all the chords positions and the scales. As Guthrie says don't let the scales rule you just use them as a tool to expand on your talent. Jamming along to a backing tracks using your emotions and feelings is an important part of developng your ability to improvise.

I'd have to say that we are pretty damn lucky, even blessed, for you less secular types out there, to have such a creatively adept musician like Guthrie Govan create these videos for us. Free of charge no less. Think about that for a sec. Thank You (sincerely) Guitar World.

@acdcyoyoer Not exactly, pitch axis is changing the key to another with the same root. You could always have chords that share a note while staying on a single key, for instance an E minor triad (E-G-B) and an A minor triad (A-C-E) share the E note, yet they're both present in the key of Gmajor/Eminor.

@agavalence Guthrie is a large jazz fan, and these kinds of chords are right up jazz alley. Take a walk around the world of jazz saxophonists and jazz guitarists, and you'll find this kind of thing all over the place.

6x555 would be c e g (which is a C chord) and a Bb in the bass. So It's definitely right. You're also right. It's kind of subjective. But my version makes more sense because it's easier to read than Bb(b9)(b5)(6)(no 3rd). overall in jazz you could be that specific, but trust me, they'll prefer C/Bb because it's easier to read.

@Socioistic I suspect that it's because people who learn by tabs and videos end up not listening to closely to what they're playing. They just learn the fingering and picking patterns. People who learn by ear are probably more likely to internalize what they've learned play.

Actually, Joe Satriani's quote on Guthrie Govan's Erotic Cakes album was "it put a smile on my face a mile wide". Satch isn't the kind of guy who wants to put down other musicians but rather wants to help them grow; he's taught a lot of the 80's legends including Vai, just as Guthrie is currently teaching at an English University. Apparently the response was that Guthrie wasn't well known enough for a decent turn out, which may or may not be true, but Satch and Guthrie are fans of each other.
