Probably the best song of the "Erotic Cakes" (2006) album Written & Performed by Guthrie Govan I do not own this song, it belongs to Guthrie Govan. FOLLOW ME: / kagancakirmusic Thanks for watching!!
I'm guessing he's just referring to the main melody, because there's no way anyone could envision the scope of this piece without having a band of other skilled musicians, which is hard to find when you're only 19. I'm 19 and where I live trying finding people to play with that are my age and as good as me is like trying to win the lottery. The chances aren't as slim, but it's still pretty bad. I'm not even joking, I'm so jealous of people that live in the center of big cities. If I had other people as good as me and as passionate I am about writing music, first of all I would be happy and my general well-being would be better, and I'd already be playing gigs.
have you ever considered going to music school? You'll meet lots of skilled, passionate musicians there! Also, there definitely is a possibility, and it's even easier now, because there are TONS of programs that you can use to create music and write music. Even if you don't have this, if you are good at music theory (which, if you look at some of his videos, he definitely is) you could write any sorts of pieces. Back when i studied music theory i could write anything from a choir piece, to jazz. Not saying that he didn't collab, but it's not impossible to write complex music by yourself if you're invested. There's always a way
Alex bob Jason Becker invented this style of neoclassical fusion jazz blues. of course Yngwie shaped Neoclassical but Jason Becker set a bar. Blue by Jason was written when he was 16 or something.
03:07-03:31 That is probably the most beautiful 24 seconds ever played on electric guitar. I feel healed from any mental or physical problem every time I hear it.
As someone who finds shredding to be soulless and flashy, Guthrie Govan is an anomaly to me. He is able to play quick without sounding like a "shredder" and still play tastefully and within the song. He plays to make the tune.
+MrDT543 That's because many other shredders play fast just for the sake of playing fast. Some barely care for expressing any musical ideas. Guthrie on the other hand, has many musical ideas, some which need to be played fast t. He plays for the sake of music, not for playing flashy stuff which have no true depth.
+MrDT543 Indeed, he is very good at mixing both into something very good! Now, I don't know if you are into metal or not, but I'd suggest looking at "Dave Davidson" from "Revocation". In my opinion, he does this very well too, and is therefore also my favorite guitarist. "Per Nilsson" from "Scar Symmetry" is also up there. His playing is a bit more "technical'ish" though, using very "out of this world" scales. :)
guthrie is such a legend, he did a guitar clinic at my music college years ago and rocked up an hour late straight from the pub carrying a 6pack of beers with him and spent most of the clinic talking to random people for over an hour about random stuff telling funny stories then realised he spent to much time talking and just shredded for close to an hour straight with the band. best.clinic.ever! he was almost rocking a band new cornford amp serial number 001 witch he left for us to play with for a few weeks
That's so cool , I'll bet he shredded .That's a trip guithrie goven played collage. Your music teacher must've been really good cause the teaches i had were were either classical or jazz snobs that never play basic, like playing in E flat instead open E, or just talk about improvising rather than actually playing. What kind beer?
BJ12578 Buckethead isnt as good with phrasing, bends, unique progressions and in my opinion composing as Guthrie. While buckethead is extremely talented in many different styles i don't believe he is nearly as good as GG.
buckethead it's not very complete, i love him but he always run and make riffs using only the natural minor scale on the classic three chords of rock music for example( b minor, a major, g major) I mean he 's very skilled (tapping slap ecc.. ) But ironically he is very commercial for what he does and he is often locked in his patterns and that it's not good because he repeat him self al lot of time, he has not freedom. Instead Guthrie have a great music theory and he is really open mind, he can do on the guitar exatly what he want without repeat himself in fact he mix jazz rock blues funk classic music ecc.. Maybe I prefer Buckethead because he makes beautiful and soulfull riffs and composition but Guthrie Govan is on a complete other level.
THIS MUSIC IS BEAUTIFUL!! MY GRANDSON BRANDON SENT ME THIS AND THOUGHT I WOULD LIKE IT. SO I LISTENED TO IT AND HE WAS WRONG. I DIDNT LIKE IT. I LOVED IT!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND TO MY GRANDSON BRANDON KEEP ON SENDING ME AWESOME MUSIC!!!!!!
It is really dissapointing to read comments which have mostly aim to compare one guitarist with another. Except from thinking about who is better, sit, listen, take what you can from this excelent piece of music. Don't bother who is better or who is using similiar technique or sound similiar to someobody else, it is useless.
***** You can compare musicians, but you can't define one as better. Comparison between two pieces of music is subjective. Defining a difference is objective.
@@_shadow_4477 lane is a god in his own right but govan has truly mastered almost every aspect of the guitar technique wise and he is a phenomenal writer on top of it
Too me 2 days of practice just to learn the first 25 seconds of the song To anyone that wants to learn this May the god of guitar have mercy on your fingers
@@bakarenibsheut12 I guess it depends on the skill level of the commenters. I ditched my PRS for a custom flamenco blanca probably around the time this was released. What about that? Humblebrag by loose association? Edit: that's also not true. But I did switch to a classical guitar. The custom sits in a case, wasting away because the temperature changes are too big in this building. I lost my now hard to get Yamaha flamenco guitar to a pawn shop and by pure luck found it listed for sale online and got a deal on it. You didn't ask about any of this
@@mackhomie6 You're right, I didn't ask XD And yeah, I think that definitely qualifies as a humblebrag. Honestly, though, Guthrie's music is bound to attract commenters who are guitar nerds themselves, and are more likely to be, or aspire to be, more proficient players.
Joe Bonamassa, Derek Trucks, John Mayer, these musicians guide my fingers as i put them on my guitar. Guthrie Govan guides my mind when I put on the headphones. Why not the fingers? Sometimes you just prefer to listen. Not to ruin the magic for yourself when playing it.
The feeling I get every time I listen to a full play through of this song with loud volume is the same feeling I get when a crazy roller coaster finally comes to an end. Pure elation, no matter how many times I listen.
The harmony + melody from the intro are for sure one of the most moving compositions of all time, it's impossible to listen to that and don't just think about live at all
+MoonWalkerTexsRanger just wondering because the dude posted a cover of the beginning of the song and it attracted me to looking this video up. your comment just caught my eye
Well you're very weird if this music doesn't make you feel anything. ( ''shivers''? ''chills''? I may have said the wrong term, English is not my native language. C'mon man don't be dishonest you know what I meant to say.)
What a beautiful master piece, it makes me feel so good, so calm. This fragment 04:05-04:33 always shakes me. I could literally listen to this song every single day
Such a brilliant and inspiring song. Especially that opening riff! Message to myself: if you are watching this comment by coincidence years later, remember your love for guitar and the great inspiration this song has caused you. If you are still in a rut after all this time, never give up! P.S. you were drunk while writing this, and in a great mood. Just putting this down for future reference!
@@PriestOfTheUnholy. Thank you for reminding of this super random comment I apparently left! This is honestly so funny. I play a lot but still struggle to make significant progress. All things considered I am happy that I haven't given up on playing guitar. Guess I will let this serve as yet another reminder to keep going. Sober this time!
@@PriestOfTheUnholy. One of the things I love about playing an instrument is that there really is no limit to what you can learn. Sounds like you just need to set some new objectives! Maybe you could shift your focus to songwriting, or maybe even learn another instrument! And yeah... not much you can do about the noise, except play with headphones. Living in a dormitory, that is what I have settled with myself over the last few years.
so many emotions so many colours .this is the genius of Guthrie .it's not a song it's a story .u can literally feel the notes inside ur chest .I feel like m listening to some classical music ..such is the depth of Guthrie 's music .GODLIKE!!
I feel like this track probably single-handedly inspired the entire current generation of modern progressive rock/metal lead guitarists. The main lick is so intervalic and I don’t think I’ve heard anything that dates back further with the same quality to it. So brilliant and inspiring. I’m so glad players like Tosin Abasi lead me to check out Guthrie’s work
+Adam K I bet Guthrie used to be as shitty as many of us in the beginning. The difference is that he practiced hours to get better while I'm slacking off and watching his videos :P
+Adam K in a couple of years you wont be anymore, atleast if you practice everyday ;) When times goes by the practicing is alot more fun becouse you will be really good at it.
After listening to the song, I feel overwhelmed with gratitude for being alive in these times and being able to witness the epicness and the beauty of this masterpiece.
I am a trumpet player, but when i listened to this at first in my life, my heart was thumbing and every time I listen to this , it’ s the same feeling.. just perfect. ABSOLUTELY great music. Just listening again and again with open mouth.... This piece is PERFECT So fucking deep spirit of this piece
Saw him in Rome. Simply the best ever seen. His touch, feeling and timing are just form the outer space. And he's so incredibly humble and down to earth. Incredible.
The nuance/ghost notes and super gelled out tone make this a treat. This is on my learn by ear list and a tone goal for me, would love to hear the iso track.
@@aidenafshar9274 i love plini and think hes an amazing guitarist, but guthrie is streets ahead. better than everyone including the new wave -- henson, abasi, plini everyone are just a step below
@@aidenafshar9274 Not the guy you asked but I agree with him so I thought I'd answer. I love Henson, Tosin and all those guys. And not just the guitarists, every single member of their bands is an absolute virtuoso. So technically, I don't think Guthrie is THAT much superior to them. I'm frightened at the thought of what Tosin Abasi will be able to play when he has 20 more years of experience lol. But Guthrie's stuff is just more...musical I suppose? More melodic. It's calming but it also takes you by surprise. It's not technical for the sake of being technical. The biggest part of Guthrie's growth was actively listening to music. He would listen to anything he could get his hands on. Guthrie said his father taught him his first chords when he was like 3 or 4. Dude spent his entire childhood either practicing guitar or sitting with his ears perked in front of the record player. I just think all of that led to him having a much larger arsenal or bag of tricks than your average virtuoso. Steve Vai has his own style. You still go 'wtf' when you listen to it but it's unexpected in the ways you expected it be(if that makes sense?). Same with most guys. Guthrie just has more versatile chops imo. (And his improvising would put anyone to shame)
@@chrisj1319 I absolutely agree with your statement about the improvising. I haven't honestly heard enough of him to determine how much better he is than the new wave guitarists, but I also don't doubt that he is around the same level technically. A decent amount of the new wave stuff is technical for the sake of it, but in cases like polyphia I'm okay with it because it's made up for with everything else. Regardless, I think the main reason I don't fully believe he is that far above everyone else (other than just not hearing him much due to lack of releases), is that I haven't really seen him push boundaries the same way the new wave guys are. One thing I do want to specify though is that the popular new wave guitarist's/bands aren't pushing that far compared to some smaller bands like vildhjarta, car bomb, slice the cake, humanity's last breath, wilderun, etc (i know these are all fairly heavy bands but nothing else came to mind).
If you had to put heaven into a single sound, this would certainly be it. That riff which continues throughout the song, overlaid by shredding, is so reminiscent of the sea and waves and it's truly beautiful. It's fast but flows so seamlessly... Just pure elation.
This is me experiencing Guthrie for the first time All that I can say is that I felt goosebumbs and vibed through the entire song anlatamam kalbim ve kulaklarım ne kadar iyi hissediyorlar :)
+Desi guy They are truly great. I don't get why people have to compare the guitar virtuosos as if one HAS to be better than the other. Each one is good at something. If they were all comparable, then they won't be individually renowned. Malmsteem would be Gilbert would be Johnson would be Satriani would be Vai would be Govan, etc. What a boring world!
I was like that too. With time they will understand what an artist is and if there was no difference there wouldn't be music. It would be like eating salty food everyday missing out on erotic cakes lol
+Str Kat Let me quote Guthrie in response to people comparing musicians - "So much of what's good about music ceases to make sense when you attempt to analyse it from a 'who's the best?' perspective..."
1:54 identical tone to Jeff Beck's on Blow by Blow "you know what I mean". Guthrie's use of the whammy bar to stretch a final, almost desperate weeping half note always reminded me of Jeff's playing.
If you combine the skills of all the best guitarist from the last hundred years, you get Guthrie. He has mastered the thing, nothing left for him to learn.
This took me back to high school when my then boyfriend (an amazing bass guitarist) first introduced me to this track. My mind was blown. Today I searched and searched like a lunatic for this track for I had forgotten the name. And that first sound...omg... Euphoria!! I hate to say this but they don't make musicians like Govan anymore I think.
