+evomoralesCO Here is my experience, which I posted on FaceBook when he passed away: Three days ago a great musician left us: Ricardo Baliardo, better known as Manitas de Plata, aged 93. When I first heard and saw him on tv, in 1967, I (15) decided then and there that this was how I wanted to play the guitar. I stopped taking classical guitar lessons and started teaching myself to play flamenco with the records of Manitas as my teacher. In 1971 I met him in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, after a recital he gave there, and he kindly signed my guitar. A year later I had so many questions about his technique that I felt the only way to get proper answers was to go and meet him again, and not in a hurry as in Amsterdam. So I took the train to Montpellier because I had read on the back of a record jacket that that was where he lived. I checked in at the youth hostel and went to the tourist office, maybe they knew his address. They had no idea. But on a map of the town they marked the two gypsy quarters of Monpellier, Manitas being a ‘gitano por los cuatros costodas’, he might well be living there, they said. In one of them I asked a postman and he knew - Manitas was living at Rue des Clairettes number (if I remember well) 8. A few minutes later I arrived at a bungalow with an ill-kept garden - and heard a lot of guitars being played inside. Bingo! But I was so tired after my night in the train from Paris that I went back to the youth hostel and returned the next morning. A woman opened the door and told that Manitas and the others I had heard (the forerunners of the Gypsy Kings) had just left for an Australian tour. Back in Holland I wrote a letter to his manager, André Bernard, about my misfortune and he invited me to a concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, in december. There, at last, Manitas gave me the lesson I had been longing for, playing for me as slowly as he could. And he signed my new guitar. In 1978 I was at the gypsy festival in Saintes Maries de la Mer, France. At one moment I was standing there, listening to some gypsies playing, with my guitar in it’s case next to me. Suddenly Manitas appeared from behind, tapped me on my right arm, and asked whether there was a good flamenco guitar in that case. There was (the Hermanos Conde I still have) - and we sat together and played in turns on my guitar, one of the best events of my life. A french tourist took photo’s and afterwards I begged him to send me a couple of prints - of course I was willing to pay in advance. He promised to do so and never did. But the memory won't fade.
