Guy Mitchell - She Wears Red Feathers

One of the many hit records that Guy Mitchell enjoyed in the 1950s. The Columbia single made No.19 in the USA Billboard charts, and was a massive No.1 in the UK NME charts. It remains one of Guy's best remembered recordings, and was always a highlight of his stage and TV performances for the rest of his life. Notice the four guys dressed as cockney pearly kings. It's top American vocal group, The Hi-Lo's.

Guy Mitchell is very underrated. He had about 40 hit songs, and he had hits in the top 10 throughout the entire decade of the 1950s. He also could sing in more than one style.

Exactly. Great singing voice. Long Live Guy Mitchell. A very talented and versatile entertainer.

Couldn't agree more. He had much the same strengths as Sinatra: distinctive, attention-commanding voice, excellent diction and intonation, but the material hasn't worn very well. It's a shame because the songs were catchy, well arranged and superbly recorded, but they often tend to come across as novelty records from a bygone age. Not that that's ever put me off.

My mum adores Guy Mitchell. We saw him live in Croydon, UK about 30 years ago. I expected to be bored to death, especially when he came on stage with a stick and spent the whole concert on a stool. Instead, it was amazing. A perfect entertainer.

Unfortunately, he died in July 1999, just a week or two before I was born (honestly, I'm that young!), but he's still remembered by some for his cracking hits that cheered us Brits up during rationing and austerity. In all, he had FOUR number-one hits; all of them are brilliant. He deserves to be remembered by more people.

Got to see the legendary Professor Mitchell in concert in Los Angeles in 1993. I had dinner with him and his wife after the show. He had some priceless tales about having a differenfce of opinion with Mitch Miller in the early 1950s about repertoire. Amazingly brilliant man. Pure class. He is greatly, greatly missed.

why do people say Guy was underrated? he was very well recognised for all of the hits he produced. what more do you want?... was he bigger than Elvis?... no.... but Guy Mitchell is still a huge legend and it shows from all the people who still like his music including me... i guess an accurate thing to say is Guy Mitchell and many stars of the era are under-appreciated by younger generations. happens to all musical eras. how's classical music faring these days?

She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt) She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes And love in her heart for me I work in a London bank, respectable position From nine to three they serve you tea But ruin your disposition Each night of music calls, rather lost I seem And once a pearl of a native girl came smilin' right at me She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes And love in her heart for me Goodbye to the London bank, I started in a-sailin' The fourteenth day from Mandalay I spied her from the railin' She knew I was on my way, waited, and was true She said "You son of an Englishman, I've dreamed each night of you" She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes And love in her heart for me I went to her Ma and Pa and said I loved her only And they both said we could be wed, oh, what a ceremony An elephant brought her in, placed her by my side While six baboons got out bassoons and played "Here Comes the Bride" I'm back here in London town and, though it may sound silly She's here with me and you should see us walk down Picadilly The boys at the London bank kinda hold their breath She sits with me and sips her tea which tickles them to death She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes And love (and love) in her heart (in her heart) for me

Red Feathers is catchy and memorable. The only thing is, to make the lyric scan "from" has to be sung as two syllables, ... "ferr-om" ... which kind of drives me nuts. Can't blame the singer; GM sings the song about as well as it can be sung. It's the songwriter's fault. So would I change it? Of course not. It's a classic, warts and all.
