Love Guy Martin. Really enjoyed his autobiography, didn’t know he was half or quarter Latvian. When he visited the former eastern bloc place his grandpa came from, you could see the likeness. Old school man is what you’re seeing. I’d stick him with Fred Dibnah, Joey Dunlop & Jeremy Clarkson. All are or were completely authentic, not bothered what you think, just getting on with whatever they are / were good at or passionate at. All untouchable on their day. I’m not sure which is maddest. Perhaps Guy for sheer “have a go at it-ability”. Absolutely not reckless. Watching his IOM TT or Irish road racing on-boards, you might disagree, but he never wanted to do other than win & he was willing to take calculated risks. I recall him saying you’ve got to be totally selfish to do road racing at the highest level. He also said if he had a long term partner & kids, he wouldn’t race. And he has, and he doesn’t. I always really admired that he kept his job as a lorry / heavy goods mechanic. Never took motorcycle manufacturer sponsorship. He’d have been more likely to win, but he couldn’t deal with the obligations, the meeting the public and his “owners”. So just declined. Guy is possibly the most successful factory-unsponsored racer. Never won, but always a threat and secured many podiums. And I love loads of the TT few who are taped to place or win. All amazing people. But I want them to quit before we lose them, like John McGuinness: don’t come back, John! Nothing to prove. There’s an idea: Guy & John talking bollox, mucking around in sheds then taking some daft machine out in the mud somewhere.
