This video caught me off guard. This is actually Horikyo's old studio. He passed away this year. I had an appointment with him last year and met up with him a couple times before he got really sick. Ended up going with someone else in the same family so still satisfied, but Horikyo was a god in the tebori world. RIP Horikyo.

@Thomas Cruise No it doesn't, at least try not to be rude when you're wrong. In both scenarios needles enter you skin, but it's clearly not at the same rate (and not with the same strength) when you use a machine. It's easier to damage the skin. He wasn't lying, it doesn't hurt as much, it's softer for the skin that's why healing takes 2 weeks instead of 1 month. That said long sessions aren't a peace of cake, it get really annoying after a few hours.

Crazy how that took 2 hours. I plan on gettin a whole sleeve done tebori style one day, i wonder how many hours that’ll take
@916Spectre
@916Spectre 4 года назад
Diego it depends on how elaborate the tattoo is more elaborate means more time, have full sleeve myself done with modern tattoo machines took about 28 hours spread out over a couple months, but traditional irezumi is a much longer and more painful process so plan for around at the very least 16 hours probably spread out over multiple visits

They always overplay weirdness in foreign country documentary shows etc, its not so rare to see tattoos these days on arms of guys in-particular, and theres plenty of "normal" tattoo shops u can go to that would also do piercing and stuff too. For a traditional yakuza tattoo, yeh u need to go somewhere less advertised im sure, but guy did not "have to go to an apartment" just to get a tattoo.
@Commievn
@Commievn 4 года назад
Properties and renting are extremely expensive, especially to big city like Tokyo and Osaka. Plus, i'm sure the yakuza mobsters would prefer something more intimate and private than an open studios, it can't help when the nation as a whole is leaning the introvert, solitude lifestyle rather than an extrovert, social ones. If you play at 1:06 you can see that he display lots of artwork in his room, that's a show of pride. Tl;DR. His apartment could be his studios, and it's not weird, it's a culture, not just a japanese one, it's a Japanese yakuza one and some takes very serious about it.

Where do you get the impression that "there's plenty of "normal" tattoo shops u can go to" here in Japan? It would be a waste of time and money to set up a shop on a public high street here for this purpose, as business would be next to none! My friend Horikazu's shop is a traditional Japanese white building, which from the outside looks like a restaurant. His clients come from all over Japan and other countries. He started out in an apartment too. Getting tattoos here is still very much frowned upon and therefore not publicly available as in other countries.
