It has long been said that using a spell called “bena” the indigenous peoples can trap a man or a woman or accomplish other purposes. In this second episode of the series called GUYANA, the News Room’s Neil Marks travels to Karasabai in the South Pakaraimas to investigate this mysterious practice and is shown a mountain called Bena, where it is said you can find all the herbs used in the practice. Why, Karasabai itself is steeped in mystery! The village is named for a rock resembling a treasure chest; the story is that the chest was magically transformed into stone by Macunaima, a legendary spirit of the indigenous people. Later, we travel up the Ireng River on the border with Brazil to find the sun parakeets, an endangered species of parrots only found in this part of the world. The people of Karasabai are fiercely protective of them sun parakeets, keeping them safe from poachers.

I spent 6 weeks in 1973 as a kid. Probably the most special summer trip of my life. There were no donkeys at that time, many horses. Over the river was Manuel a Brazilian who had a store and sold things you could not get in Guyana. The boat was left tied at the edge of the river and you left it tied when you came back from Brazil. Mostly Troolie houses , only Government employees had brick houses. The plane came Monday and Thursday and you had to clear the runway and get off the horses as the plane sometimes spooked them. The resident Vet was Lenny Rodrigues. He also specialized in breaking horses. In the mountains was a village called Banannal. The big family in the village had all the cows so to speak. A young son called ben maybe 12yrs old at most, but could lasso and crack the bullwhip like an adult. What a beautiful set of people love them all. On my way to Lethem last year the Bus driver said turn off here for Karasabai. Almost said put me off. lol. Cows were slaughtered Mondays and Thursdays to catch the plane. Beef was 25 cents a pound. The electricity went off at 9 or 10 I think. The generator was at the General store managers house. He dimmed the lights 3 times signalling the lights were about to go off for the night

Karasabai Village is beautiful. People should visit this place and ride a donkey for fun and promote awareness. I went there in 1980 and enjoyed every minute of my visit. Its more updated now and will be back soon.

I thought the people down in Southern Guyana would have a different accent due to the influence of their mother tongue and isolation, but they sound like any other Guyanese. My Mum is from East Coast Demerara and the accent is very similar.

Better Roads & Communications 'will' bring External Forces - not necessarily Compatible. It is a Balancing Act which demands a Collective effort to Preserve Culture or they will be Over-run. The Fruit resembling Ginnip, I believe I saw in Borneo called 'Crystal', one of the most Beautiful Tasting Fruit I ever ate on 4 Continents. Skin is Thicker than Ginnip with Firm Clear/White Flesh with one seed, I was shown to Slam the fruit on a flat surface to Break the flexible but Firm skin. If it is the same, it is worth Farming, they said it came from S America originally.
