I've had the Cannon X for 7 months in Aus, a few of the items you are missing are on this model, telescopic steering wheel and rear cup holders, I will say congratulations on your purchase, I've just clocked over 15000 km and haven't had a problem. I love my Cannon and can't fault it, I've put it through hell and it hasn't faltered once
@@greatideasworthsharing true, might not have the best aftermarket parts available yet, but for the price + claim gst + tax deductible depreciation, this is bargain of the century as company vehicle
Congratulations on your purchase. I would be excited to have a new vehicle as such. It's a shame that simple and uneducated minds sometimes need to criticize others for their choices. You have out layed the money and we wish you the best. It looks great. Just need some tinted slimline weather shades on the windows to complete the look.
I'm a firm believer that everyones entitled to their opinion and views just don't force them on me. I think in time more and more people will see the Cannon as an obvious choice based on price and features. Sure its not perfect but my Amarok would now cost me $30k more than the Cannon and frankly I'd rather spend that on something else like a jetski, motorbike and UTV :-)
Thanks for the video. Im thinking about getting one as a work car, a mate got one in his fleet and loves it. I also don't mind how they look at all, I think they're on of the better looking utes on the market
Quick tip about the indicator volume. If you go into the settings, under volume you'll find a setting for "alarm". Adjusting that will change how loud the indicator is. Hope that helps. Also you probably won't like the fact that our X here in Australia has a centre armrest in the back, but no cupholders lol.
Yeah, I never really looked at it that way but yes it could force some of the first tier players to move their pricing down BUT the skeptic in me thinks GWM will just ask more as they improve the product and eventually (like all brands) once established with a strong track record move up in price. just think what Hyundai used to cost 30 years ago vs now.
Lovely 20 inch wheels.. Looks teally amazing... Im from SA thinking of getting a cannon unfortunately they dont give us the option to change the wheels..to fit those 20inch did you have to adjust suspension or anything or was it a straight fit? Thank you
I'm currently considering buying either a new Canon X or a 2018 Ford Ranger Wildtrak. (Approx same price where in Aus). But I think you've sold me on the Canon. Will be calling the dealership tomorrow. Thanks!
No denying the Ranger is legendary but for me much like yourself a brand new car under factory warranty vs a 3-4 year old car for same money just didn't measure up.
In mine I have noticed that when you have the lane keep assist set to keep it in centre of the lane, it works better. It then sort of feels like predictive steering and the aggressive assistance is way less. I also did not like the lane keep assist it did feel like you were fighting it all the time.
Hi mate, can you do a video showing how to use the paddles on steering wheel and from gear stick seems to only show reverse neutral and M/D, my crystal black cannon L is in quarantine at docks and waiting the L.O.D module, anyway a vid of what I asked of above would be very helpful and appreciated, cheers mate
Here in Australia, throttle control updates its now out fixing a lot of that issue. This is the first video of yours I have seen. Do you know about cross country mode. The card/pen holder also. One issue I have, minor as is, lighting in the rear of the cab. good review
Yeah, I only realized a few days ago that there is no light in the rear seat area of the cab which is odd. No idea about Cross country mode. I better finally read the manual
@@greatideasworthsharing cross country mode not in manual. Which is silly. Press and hold traction control button, about 4 seconds. Will come up on dash "cross country mode". Locks centre diff to make a proper 4wd.
Hey mate , awesome video your cannon definitely is a head turner especially with those rims!!! Can I ask how much the dealership charged extra for the rims and did they reduce the cost and take the originals of did you take them and have to re sell??
the media system is bloody slow to turn on i noticed.. that would irritate me everyday, otherwise would be very happy, great colour, mags and black pack. looks really good, im considering one or an H6 SUV which looks really good in the ultra package. thanks
Nice video! I am still on the fence about buying one, considering that you are now about 1 year into ownership how has your cannon held up? I am not needing /buying the 4WD so wont be taking it on any hard off roads Thanks in advance!
Almost 2 years now and still very happy. Sure its not a new generation ford ranger but it was also half the price. I still think it is a good vehicle and had no mechanical issues at all.
How has it been running. I hear that when in low range with rear diff locker that there are some concerning sounds, which I am curious if that's someone's genuine comment or if it's the fact it's a "cheap car" compared to a brand new ranger.
Yeah the hitting the auto switch for ac every time you get In is a pain in the royal , and it’s always blowing at my feet, Mabe a software update will fix it ?
I hope so as it is painful. I've wired it into my brain now so I always do it but I shouldn't have to activate it everytime, it should just remember the last setting.
Yeah, I get that but if I compare it to my Amarok which was on 22inch rims its still harsh. There will be some after market stuff that comes out that will really improve it I'm sure. But yes the ride is less abrasive on the factory rims.
Thank you for the practical review. This is so informative. I am not sure of your model. Here is South Africa we have LS and LT. How is the Diesel / Petrol holding you?
Mine is a diesel. Here in NZ we have the base which I think is the LS and then mine is a limited and then they have the Cannon X which is the next model up.
If you are referring to iDrive, when on Ultimate 9 mode, the car just launches! Crazy how much of a difference it makes, but gear changes don't feel smooth.
I'm reasonably optimistic. When I go to resale I'll be looking for $20k and a ford ranger/hilux will be asking $35k (on a good day). I'm pretty sure someone will buy it for that $$$
Actually it feels more powerful and torque than the numbers would suggest but I've not done anything under massive towing load yet. I have a trailer of rubbish for the tip in next week or so and that will be a true test. The throttle is a little jittery for my liking but I'm now getting used to it so like anything it doesn't bother me too much.
@@greatideasworthsharing Keep an eye on your dealer, here in Oz we've just gotten a new software update for the ECU that smooths out the throttle response and makes it even better to drive.
Post July 2021 production now has updated throttle control and turbo lag software/improvements and same updates available when pre-July cars are serviced. They provide the updates for free during service. Believe the throttle control twitch now fixed. Can’t wait to find out.
Just had my software upgraded at 5000km service. The Mandarin writing is still there on reverse camera which is annoying. I think the throttle response is a little better and turbo lag is a bit less, but then it was never too noticeable anyway personally - its a big truck so its expected. With iDrive on Ultimate 9 setting, it just launches from start, almost scary how quick it goes, but feels like the gears don't seem to change smoothly so I have it hooked up but have it turned off.
Hello how does this ute handle the hills in NZ. For me that's a big thing, we have used a Foton Tunland in the past it seemed very sluggish going up hills does this ute have that problem. Thanks
I'm still yet to do a massive tow test. Without a load it honestly goes well. The power if it has 5 adults in and a minor tray load is almost un noticable then just me in it alone.
Apparently (don't know if true) it is AWD up till 100km and then defaults to rear wheel drive. I really should know. Performed great on beach recently so 4L works well.
It's not an AWD or full time 4wd. They use a Borg Warner torque on demand system that automatically sends drive power to the front or rear depending on many factors like speed, traction , steering etc etc. You can put it in cross country mode which is basically 4L with centre diff lock to force 50/50 drive or you can use 4L. You can go on soft sand, mud, snow and not have to worry about putting it in 4wd or not cause it's automatic
The volume is bad programming and underspec'd hardware for the head unit. What's happening is they are pumping the turn indicator clicker sound through the head unit - this isn't unusual as nearly all cars do this now, but they massively cheaped out on the head unit, which appears to only support a single audio channel. So when you switch the indicator on, the cars programming will crank the volume to 10 and lock it there so you can't "turn down the indicator sound". I suspect this is also why the radio is at volume 10 after the initial car start. I suspect the intention was to ensure that the volume is at the correct level for it to tone errors (such as your tyre pressure sensor) which would normally tone when the engine first starts - however, because the head unit takes a millennia to start, the head unit completely misses the can bus signal to play error tones, and then throws to radio without going back to your last volume setting. God only knows how that got past ANCAP but whatever... Lol If I am indeed correct about the above, I question the ability to swap the head unit out without completely murdering in car safety tones. Finally the LDVs also have the same tyre pressure issue. There's a fellow kiwi of yours on YT with one, and the dealership said they will fix it by snipping the sensor as it can't be fixed! Make sure you don't accept that fix as it leaves an engine code, and apart from the amber error light reminder at every start that your car is not perfect, it will hurt you at trade in / resale down the road.
The radio doesn't set itself to 10 when the car stars. That's an LDV thing. And you can change the indicator volume in the settings so you don't have to worry about it when the cameras are on. Finally, ANCAP hasn't rated the car yet (even though the car was submitted back in March) so that point is invalid.
Well from what I’m hearing there ancap rating is 5 star, that said for the money you’re paying for a new car in a market where something similar is 2 3 times more expensive it can have its little annoyances…
Funny you had an Amarok and brought the gwm. I was going to buy the gwm and ended up buying a v6 amarok. The amarok has heaps of room in the doors. There is an update for the throttle/ gear controls I think. I have heard that the throttle control units you can buy are quite good. Check them out on RU-vid.
My Amarok was a few years ago. I sold it and then didn't have a ute for 2 years and only now got back into a ute. I loved my Amarok and I'm pretty sure the next one out next year is going to be best in class but for me the price point was the biggest reason for not returning.
All post July 2021 models now have the updated throttle control and turbo lag software. I’ve heard dealers are now making the same update when you bring in your pre-July 2021 model in for a service. I heard from a friend he didn’t notice much in the turbo lag but said the throttle control twitchiness has completely gone and it’s a vast improvement.
Its a good question but if you are indicating to turn at a set of lights and just waiting at say a traffic light you can't adjust the volume until you turn off the indicator. You'd be amazed how often it happens.
@@MoTecZA I think so too - it's on the left side of the tub, in line with the top part of the rear headlight. You can see a small dent in the side of the rear tray when you move the camera towards the rear of the car.
Was talking with a mate of mine the other day that has 3 of these doing security patrols in Melbourne, he said for $63 a tank they were averaging 850ks running around town, he’s like he’d love to see what they can get on the hwy
@@greatideasworthsharing due to the lack of accesories I have placed an order from alibaba for arch flares black out kit and bonnet protector. I'll let you know how it goes
Yes, fair comment but even on the normal wheels I felt the suspension was a bit less refined than it could be. Not enough to be super upset or anything.
Each to their own. I've lost count of the number of things in my life from China. I don't agree with their ideology politically but I know they can and do make good products and are only getting better and better at it.
I’m really not a fan of Chinese cars after living in China for 12 years for work I’ve driven many and they are typically all junk but these are export models so the quality is better, better not best lol…but yes I think for the money they do have some value but what all these you tube video reviews never mention is the resale factor. Too early to gauge on these but let’s look at history for similar model vehicles and I would wager these will be worth less than half in 6 years and if you bought a ranger or hilux yes you will pay more but you won’t lose anywhere near as much on the resale. Look at the prices for these known brand vehicles and you will see what I mean and yeah ok take a few grand off for covid tax and yeah your still way better off with hilux or ranger etc etc if you can afford to get into one at the start. That’s my opinion, but like I said I’m just watching all these vids and everyone’s always beating the drum of cheap to buy I just thought to share the other end of the perspective.
What do you recommend? A Hilux or BT50 built in Thailand from parts made in China? Or an Amarok, thrown together by those master craftsmen the Argentinians? It's all image driven Bullshit, at the end of the day it's about building the cheapest ute and selling for a premium price using badge engineering.
