That came out very well! Wish I could join in with more of Emma's live streams but now that I'm working full time if I get to see them it's after the fact. And I agree, using one's home made tools has a satisfaction that you don't get with commercial tooling.

That's an incredible achievement for a beginner Matty. You could pass the indicator holder off as bought one. Great work and you'll enjoy using it on your future projects. Tony

You've done a brilliant job there Matty. You must be very proud. That might be the finest/smallest shaper work I've seen so far. Very cool. The cutting tool was absolutely dinky. I reckon you would make a very high quality boring head now that you've got dovetails under your belt. Cheers, Craig

It turned out beautiful, just needs maker mark on it. I too have one on the go, being motivated by you and Emma. I just picked up the measurements from watching, and converted to my forte which is Imperial, arm is 5/16" studs are 1/4-20 and the dovetail part is from 1/2" square with a 7/16-20 thread. Thanks for the video I enjoyed this build very much, cheers! (I haven't figured out the dovetail yet, mine may be band-sawed, lathe as a shaper or make a custom one tooth dovetail cutter.)
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop 4 года назад
Thanks, I’m really glad you enjoyed the build, I like to work in imperial, metric doesn’t work all the well for me, as for the dovetails it wouldn’t take much to file them in with a small triangle file, I did consider doing it this way but thought I’d better use the shaper, let me know how you get on and I’d like to see you build, Cheers Matty
@howder1951
@howder1951 4 года назад
@@MattysWorkshop Yes I just came in from the shop, tapped the 1/4-20 thread , knurled the outside and turned down the small part of the screw knobs, and then proceeded to explode my HSS parting blade! I managed to salvage the part, but so it goes. I got a piece of key stock on the four jaw, starting on the two adapters, Wish me luck, I think I need it! Cheers!

I also had different size dovetails. I wonder if there is a factory in China that just happen to have different size standards for the two dove-tails? Although mine is supposedly made in the Czech republic...
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop 4 года назад
The difference in the dovetails almost brought me undone, there are a few others making the indicator holder that have had the sample trouble, my test indicator is a banggood special so should have known that they would be different
@matspatpc
@matspatpc 4 года назад
@@MattysWorkshop my point is that mine isn't a Banggood product, and whilst not Starrett or similar, it's meant to be pretty good. I have three of their calipers, a couple of regular dial indicators and two micrometers from the same company, and they are definitely decent quality, at least as good as my made in China Starrett micrometer and dial indicator. And around the same prices (additional shipping, with China goods you often get free shipping, that's a difference if you only buy one thing at a time) - and probably no good shipping from Europe to Australia...
