Hey guys FatBuddyCat here! Today we are learning how to check our piston to valve clearance. Using the play doh method , we are looking for .060-.080 inches to ensure that our valve doesn't end up somewhere that it shouldn't!!
Big Thanks To My Many Patient Friends on this one....

I hope so. At the very least I'll have a better understanding of what's going on inside!

Oh boy, this is what it has come to? I'm just going to eyeballs it from now on😊.

I think you just wanted to play with some Play Doh LOL! Seriously though, excellent work FBC. Spot on video to help guys out with this stuff!

Thanks! I just learned the method myself. It was fun just learning how to do this to better understand the relationship betw.een the valves and piston.

Lol I guess!! I always pictured the valves coming down more. I learned a lot from this and it really put a few things into better perspective.

I like the play doh method you did. That works great. I'll see you on the next one Buddy 🔧👍

Its my first time trying it. I learned a lot about the valves and where they are in relation to the piston. I always thought they came closer!

@@fatbuddycat great idea to check. Especially a hemi head

Plenty of clearance, but it's always safe to check. Glad you put this out. Some of these camshafts available nowdays can really eat up that clearance. I've got one of those NR racing "cheater" cams where the lobes are darn near square. Took a ton of clearancing on the block just to get it to fit. Piston to valve is around .080 which is still safe.

I'm going to try more advanced builds so I'm trying to learn some of the techniques that old school professionals use. The whole part with the hemi valves being at an angle and closer was a revelation to me! I get excited about learning this stuff!!

@@fatbuddycat maybe do some cyl head porting vids? Wish I had a way at home to make some kind of flowbench for testing. Porting and valve work would be great topics to cover

@@williamstamper442 I'm going to be doing my videos a little differently. I'm trying really hard to concentrate on 1 thing at a time. I will 💯 do one on porting by itself, that's a great idea!

That caliper was reading .224 not .124 time for some ratio rockers!

Never tried those but I heard they add lift!
@nicsminibikes
@nicsminibikes Год назад
@@fatbuddycat 1.3 add about 30% so if u have a .265 lift cam should put u around .344 lift and put ur piston to valve clearance around .145ish. As always double check everything I make no promises!

With a flat top piston there is an easier way to check this without clay. Lay a straight edge across the chamber and measure between it and the valve at tdc open spec. Also you should check the spark plug this same way. I have a Tilly head I milled .020” that I have to shim the plug so it won’t hit the piston.

Oh man!! I love that!! Someone told me to get a bridge gauge of sorts that lays across the cylinder and measures down to the piston too.

@@fatbuddycat yes did you search for the deck bridge yet? Makes it real easy and accurate to check piston to deck clearance.

@@fatbuddycat yes. I have a dial gauge setup for that. Makes very quick work.

About your playdowe system, I don't know about that.

I wasn't tight enough to be concerned. It's an easy way to see where you're at if you use higher lift cams, ratio Rockers or get to milling the head down. Hemi heads also bring the valves closer to the piston.
