Ligeti's Six Bagatelles is Carion's signature piece since 2004. It perfectly demonstrates Danish ensembles unique performance style - movement and elements of choreography.

To all of you "great masters of musical form, theory and aesthetics", these guys actually have impeccable coreography that suit the music incredibly well! The point of their coreography is not dancing to the music, ffs, it is to visualize the instrumentation, form and relations between instruments and group of intstruments of the quintet in each movement of the whole piece. When someone has a solo, others who are just the bass layer beneath, or the ostinato accompaniment stand aside, eventually looking each other in the eyes or interacting among themselves, according to the similarity of the material in their part. They also move according to the articulation in their instrument's part, in each movement. It is not mocking, it is visualising music with movement, while playing BY HEART at the same time. I'm a bassonist myself and have played this with my quintet, and these guys, I can tell you that first hand, are doing a great musical AND coreographical job! Ignorance is not good guys. If you don't know much about something, don't judge, at least not out loud. You look silly. Really silly.

Wow. To be able to play this well, while standing/remembering their 'dance moves' is amazing! . I'm an OK amateur bassoonist and I stand ('sit') in awe of these talented players! The visual 'moves' do make this music more, er, 'accessible' to mass audiences... and having sat behind oboes and flutes who sway and swoon and bounce ALL OVER the place from the waist up in orchestra I wonder if this physicality is actually 'liberating' for the players? Anyway, great music and incredible players.
@mal2ksc
@mal2ksc 6 лет назад
Being able to move is liberating, but having to do it consistently, the same way every time, is adding another level of difficulty. Marching bands and drum corps do it all the time, but the music does suffer -- sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. The music isn't compromised here!

Exquisite juxtaposition of excellent musicianship, interpretation, and joy. But I listen to it repeatedly because the performance is beautiful. Each woodwind is so hard to play while moving - especially non vibrato, dynamics in motion, yet with feeling. It is so fun how this piece takes my mind's eye straight into a world floating in mid 20th century modern art, film noir, and wild colors.

Amazing! I’ve never seen anything like this, so cool. I actually found that the choreography only added to the overall experience. I didn’t think it was “clowning”, they definitely weren’t laughing, and they seemed to take the movements and the music both very seriously. I’m just now studying wind quintets so watching this a few times (and probably a few more) is very helpful.
