It's extremely ignorant and serves no purpose. Look at the other gymnast from other countries ( euro centric) who have moved and settled here in the states. It's that other than narrative. Hurd is American with an asterisk next to her name. He and others need to be told to stop it.
There is way too many wrong about his words. Saying china lost her like man, back in time in the one child system they threw away girls like garbage no need for stupid comments.... and after all, she got adopted and she is American.
@@nathanielhalls1893 i don’t think we should assume Morgan would have the same achievements in gymnastics had she stayed in China. If she is from a very poor family, she may not even have the chance to do any gymnastics and would have just lived a regular life, or she may have explored something entirely different and succeed in a different field. There are way too many possibilities to assume that everything would be the same.
Most of these made me mad but the: "absolute movie fanatic...any spare time she's got" ..*falls*.. "and perhaps she's been watching too many" took me OUT
Like... its a bit of a jab, but it seems more of a matter of having the right set up for a joke, and taking the chance, rather than just trying to be mean. Almost felt like putting a mildly funny dig in, to soften the comment, where the others are trying to be harsh with it.
Only if you watch the rest of the performance, Elfie turned out to be correct here. It was a disaster after that first pass. She basically messed up the entire rest of the routine.
Men don't even get fired for sexual assault or rape so he wouldn't have been fired for a pedophile-y comment like that. It's the f-ed up culture we live in.
They love to say when someone is adopted, they beat home the point Simone was adopted too until Twitter slammed them for saying her mom wasn't her "real mom."
@@queensoff5149 it literally isn't funny tho?? Being continuously negative adds nothing to watching gymnastics and its much better to watch without commentary. Also, i dont know of you can really compare the toxicity of two sports and say one is worse than the other? Both have issues that need to be fixed and it feels shallow rank them. Sorry that point was bothering me from before
Monica is THE WORST. Especially as she makes degrading comments about gymnasts being 'stick insects' and also makes degrading comments about gymnasts who have a slightly more muscley build for being 'fat'. She just shames everyone. I hope to god that she never ever coached gymnasts.
I think those were the times of when the Cold War was a thing so americans talking shit about Russia is normal when you think about the timeline hahaha
@@helenf.7221 The average dress and jean size for a woman is 16-18 in America. The media has taught you that size 8 is fat because throughout the years, beautiful women were depicted as being skinny. Everyone is beautiful, no matter what size they wear. Please educate yourself before commenting this.
@@helenf.7221 The commentator wasn't implying that a size 8 (U.S size 4) was fat. She was saying that she's probably only a size 8 in spite of looking _bigger_ than that on camera.
@QPHashSS77 They were calling her diva for years because she was standing up for herself, she wasn't always agreeing with her coaches and wasn't afraid to come head to head with people like the rodionenkos, implying that she caused a lot of problems and she should listen to her coaches like the Americans or gymnasts from other countries did. A few years forward and we have seen what this "don't speak up" thing that they embraced caused with all those survivors coming out with their stories. It was definitely not the worst but still. Not to mention they 're judging gymnastics they're not on a reality show.
At least Aliya doesn't understand English that much. Any of those girls who were body shamed or sexualized would be absolutely crushed if they listen to this.
Andy Willard Well, the Russians were literally crying by the end of the team competition and Mustafina was being harsh when things started going downhill, so there definitely was an element of diva there.
Sister Catrina Duh, I have ears. I’m talking about how Tim said “the Chinese would be mad.” Us Asians know Asian American athletes exist and we don’t really “get mad” at them for not competing for our countries or something. Because we don’t care.
@@bagelized Actually, you should care that yet another female from China has been adopted by foreign parents! Social scientists have noted that China is missing some 30 million females! That's a lot of men who won't get wives! As for what the commentators say, Daggot sounds almost racist and needs to keep his mouth shut!
The fact that they are talking about these young womens’ bodies is AWFUL. They are there to add commentary about the performances of the athlete, not about how they look. Absolutely disgusting.
Good god, all those body shaming comments. These girls are elite athletes, I'm pretty sure their weight is just fine. I'd like to see the commentators try and do some of the same skills they're criticizing.
Most of the commentators were former gymnasts (with some even turned coaches) themselves. I'm not saying that makes it right, but this whole "I'd like to see _xxx_ try and do some of the same skills they're criticising" is juvenile. Do you think even the judges can do the skills they're scoring? Because they, like the commentators, would have come from completely different eras and probably have *MUCH* more unsavoury opinions... So again, I'm not saying I agree with the shaming, of course I don't, it's completely unprofessional at best. But politely, your argument against it is weak. The issue is the choice of the language used, not whether or not they can do the same skills.
@@MD-722 I mean, former gymnast =/= being able to currently do the skill. But regardless, who cares? My "argument" (which isn't even an argument, because there is no defending these shitty commentators) isn't that they can't do the skills so therefore they can't comment on them, my argument is that they clearly lack understanding of the sport, and should try it to realize how hard it is. Like, the comment about the gymnast who likes watching movies, and when she struggles on beam, someone says "maybe she's been watching too much." Honestly, as former gymnasts, that just makes it worse. They KNOW the discipline, strength and endurance it takes to get to this level of the sport. You don't get there by slacking off. It's easy for them to sit on their high horse and criticize these gymnasts for being lazy or fat, but if they actually tried to do any of these skills, maybe they'd realize just how difficult it is, and have more appreciation for and understanding of how difficult it is.
@@MD-722 Look, can you maybe NOT tell me what my argument is or isn't? Why the heck is this even an argument? Whatever the qualifications of these commentators, their comments are extremely out of line. It's a youtube comment section, not an essay. I made one offhand comment that I'd like to see the commentators try and attempt the skills, because I think their criticism shows lack of understanding for the sport. It doesn't matter what their qualifications are, their comments are inappropriate, offensive, and just straight up irrelevant at many times.
@@MossyBallerina I'm not telling you what your argument is or isn't. I simply highlighted the part of it that I wished to discuss with you. You then denied that that was you meant, followed it up with what you allegedly mean, then spent the next paragraph contradicting everything you'd just said! Also "argument" does not meant that you and somebody are disagreeing, the word _argument_ in this context a synonym for point. The point you were making is your argument. Finally, as you pointed out this a comment section. You commented and received a comment just like many other people. We _are_ adults here and you are being cordially engaged in discussion, not attacked. So I don't understand why you're getting so offended on account of the flaws in your (widely and incorrectly used) argument being pointed out? Because they don't support the overall point you're trying to make, which you seem to have missed that we're actually in agreement on!
Tim Dagget remarks about Morgan Hurd about being born in China sound very problematic and offensive. Why didn’t he say anything about Nastia, who was born in Russia. Let’s start that she comes from a strong family of gymnast, Her dad was part of 1988 Soviet Team and won sliver in all around and her mom was world champion in rhythmic gymnast. If Tim if so considered about what the Chinese feel about Morgan, why didn’t you question the Russians when Nastia was competing? Mind you that was at time where the Russians were falling and couldn’t recover there old Soviet dominance. Why didn’t Tim anything about Russians being jealous about Nastia competing for the US, one of Russia biggest competitor. Someone needs to kick Tim dagget off, he made me dislike US gymnastics.
I’m 99% sure it’s because she’s adopted, and for some godforsaken reason, he thinks it’s funny and clever to make quips about China wishing they’d kept her. I just hope she didn’t feel hurt having that said to her face... ugh. Would NOT miss this guy if he went ahead and retired. :/
She is a person, not an object for countries to lay claim to for sports. That, and she was adopted when she was 11 months old. She spent the vast majority of her life in the US, so she is American. She doesn’t even remember anything about China, so it’s absurd to think she would compete for a county she has no recollection of.
Because Naatia Liukin had the style of a Russian gymnast, very graceful and beautiful lines. Morgan Hurd, and Suni Li for that matter, are powerful tumblers in addition to being good on beam, which the Chinese can’t seem to produce.
@@tyt.862 idk if it's actually a crime, but he's implying that grown men would find her (a child) sexually appealing, which is really gross. Definitely should've been fired.
He says "For all the dads in the audience, she's 13, AND she dances like that." He was saying dads would be horrified at their daughters dancing in such a sexual manner, not that they would find her sexually attractive.
@@bethanymclean2136 he could have just said nothing. Just bc you're paying to be a commentator, doesn't mean you have to say whatever pops into your perverted mind.
How many times is that woman going to call these 13-year-olds prepubescent stick insects …. Like WTF you’re literally body shaming a preteen. Not to mention the male commentators are saying some pretty inappropriate things about those same 13-year-olds.
Really? I didn't hear anything about body until somebody said shes skinny. I dont think thats body shaming, bodyshaming is like "omg eat you weird twig""
It’s disgusting the amount of comments about these young girls bodies. Isn’t their job to commentate on the sport and the athletes technique and skill?
If you can't appreciate the fact that gymnasts are serious, world class athletes, and you can't appreciate or respect them as such, you shouldn't be watching gymnastics.
I never even realized how toxic the commentators are. the ONLY person who can speak on gymnastics as a commentator is Nastia Liukin. she would NEVER speak negatively about fellow gymnasts.
I love this compilation great job the editing had me on the floor🤣. That aside tho it’s really sad to hear these people saying those things. I mean who is the commentator that kept commenting about the gymnasts’ bodies? And kept saying the same “twig insect” phrase each time? That’s literally wrong on so many levels. And Elfie is so wrong for saying someone had no talent when she couldn’t do half of what that gymnast did. Glad she’s not commentating anymore.
She was saying stick insect, and yeah Monica Phelps had no shame! Constantly commented on the gymnast's bodies and before the internet she was the commentator us Brits had to listen to!
So your problem is that he said the choreography was sexy....not that the gymnast is in a leotard dancing sexy, and that someone literally taught her to do it?
@@igboamaka6142 Yes, their problem is that the commentators did not think before they spoke. What you're addressing in your post is a completely separate issue.
I am very disturbed at how they talked about Morgan. I am also a Chinese adoptee and it made me so upset hearing about basically who she truly “belongs” to.
Lol Efli. At least Semenova is a world champion and came in fourth in Beijing whereas you didn’t even get to compete at a world championship, let alone the olympics. 😂😂
This was great! There was once a commentator that made a CREEPY comment about (I think it was Al Trautwig ) Nastia....he was talking about how she just bends herself over (she was stretching), but it was definitely awkward, lol. I tried to find the comment but it seems to have disappeared…🤷♀️
@@Paulafan5 How old was Al? And considering he'd been commenting about her gymnastics since well before she was 18? Definitely creepy. Even if you're a commentator and find an (adult) athlete attractive, your job is to commentate on the athletics, not making googly eyes. And that's taking the age bit out, which is still relevant.
"Back rolls?" Alyssa Edward's is everything. There British commentator was mean, but some of her comments made me laugh. Tim was just wrong. Really Tim? Seriously?
they used to make SO MANY comments about how the gymnasts look and what they should look like or saying something like “her twist was very poor” like you don’t just say that to the whole world- I’m very glad they stopped
I just don’t get all the comments on size, undergarments, being. 13, etc...they just aren’t relative and take away from the actual competition one is viewing. Some comments are down right mean and unnecessary.
A lot of people coming for Tim Daggett here because he's infamous but I found those belittling, nasty, and body-shaming comments made by the female commentators even worse. (Also it'd be great if there was subtitles, it's kind hard to understand some of them)
ARE YOU KIDDING ME. YOU DID NOT INCLUDE EKATERINA LOBAZYNUK'S beam in the TF at Worlds 1999?!?! Lobaznyuk had a runny nose and the commentator went on about how the Russian federation must be falling apart because they allowed a gymnast who is sick to compete...this was right before Lobazynuk hit like the best beam routine of the competition.
@@Paulafan5 No, it's not okay in any way. I'm not from an English speaking country and I don't watch men's gymnastics as much so I don't know what they usually say, but imo it's unacceptable either way. They're gymnasts, not models.
Yeah, that needs to stop too! So many male gymnasts suffer from eating disorders. It’s less talked about but it’s disgusting and sad how they’re shamed. And even sometimes creepily sexualized too.
Tim is THE MOST biased, unintelligent, rude and downright disgusting commentator! 1:54 - no one else was thinking it, sir!? The fact that you did... JAIL!!!
Hm, seems like figure skating isn’t the only Olympic sport where the commentators are annoying pricks the entire time. RIP gymnasts I would be so humiliated if someone talked about me like this. Oh my god.
