Jim Brown shares the art of gyotaku fish printing, traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice which dates back to the mid-1800s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own.
This demonstration was created for Cahaba River Society's 2020 Fry-Down, the 11th annual festival celebrating the Cahaba River and the first-ever virtual festival. To learn more about the Fry-Down, visit FryDown.com.

You can use shoji paper and India ink. Some of the sumi inks are toxic so be careful if you plan on eating the fish. Traditionally color was added afterwards with watercolors. I've heard before that gyotaku was invented to settle bets between fishing samurai over who caught the biggest fish So cool to see this here. I'm of Japanese descent and I grew up fishing on the Cahaba River.

You can use Tempera. I don't think acrylic will work.
